Hi ladies

I suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) for those that dont know

It had really only been since I had a car accident last March that I have suffered from it and the Dr had me going gluten free which really helped then I had an episode of cramps and was medicated for them, I stopped the medication once I got my bfp and since being pregnant I have been symptom free for the first trimester could eat everything with no reactions

But last week I came down with a tummy bug which is making its way around the family! and since then Ive had major bloating and trapped wind etc and its horrible! I know its IBS type pain rather than anything to do with baby

Anyway from what I have read its not uncommon for IBS symptoms to disappear in the first trimester and come back the second trimester

Anyway just wanted to know if there is anyone out there that has IBS and what has happened during pregnancy etc

Also was thinking of going back to gluten free tomorrow for a few days and see if I get any relief from the wind / bloating etc - is it safe to be gluten free in pregnancy? something I will ask my ob next time anyway

Thanks

Totally safe to be gluten free, gluten/wheat is not a necessary food so you don't need to worry about replacing it with anything else you'll get plenty of fibre from fruit/veg and other grains. I'm suppose to be gluten free, have had a small relapse though, I'm lucky and get no IBS symptoms all pregnancy which makes it far too easy to indulge in bready loveliness, I should stop though cos it effects my iron levels

Yup, my sister has coeliacs and is currently PG and has to be GF.

In terms of IBS, I had the same thing. Would be fantastic one trimester and then heinous the next. I think 2nd tri was the worst.

My IBS was awful for the entirety of my pregnancy with DD, and it has been horrendous for the first trimester of this pregnancy too. But I am craving bread like anything so I guess I'm not helping myself

Hi Kye

I also have IBS and the only thing that gives me any relief is a totally gluten free diet and very minimal dairy. Whilst pregnant, I found I could tolerate dairy just fine, in fact, I had cheese cravings throughout! However gluten continued to be a trigger food for me and as such I didn't touch it throughout the pregnancy. Like the others I'd agree that it is totally safe, no risk at all to baby. In fact, DH is a celiac, and his specialist reassured me even with our combined problems that our daughter only has a 10% chance of inheriting a gluten allergy.

Hope that helps!

im coeliac and have been gf thru 2 pregnancys actually for the last 9years. have on & off again IBS

Got IBS bad after D1 birth, I think from all the trauma I had having her. worst thing for me was the need to go so urgently, rapid bowel pains and about 2mins to find a toilet. aweful! lucky no accidents JUST! Sorry if TMI but thats IBS for you.

My gp sent me to dietician at HOsp a couple times thru each of my other pregnancies. Doubt she will this time but if she does I will go. good to get the latest advice direct from a dietician and for FREE!

How are you feeling now Kye?

I get IBS and have to be careful what I eat. I find it helps to eat what I actually feel like (at the same time being careful with dairy and gluten). I find that if I really fancy something that it tends to sit better in my stomach ... maybe just a mind thing??? We always make sure we have a few dinner options each night so I can choose what I feel like rather than trying to eat something I don't really feel like. I get quite stressed about eating and feeling ill so to do this makes a massive difference ... it makes me feel a little less stressed about it all which I'm sure helps lots!
