Topic: Pregnancy: Glucose Testing-worried Posted: 04 December 2011 at 5:53pm |
So i am 31 weeks and only just had my Pregnancy Glucose Testing last week as my MW forgot to give me the test at 28 weeks so the first one came back very high and now i have to do the test where i can not eat for 10 hours and have to stay for 2 hours in the blood test office. I am sooo worried tho as have had some pregnancy complications and just feel like i can't do anything right and am already a bad mum
so how worried should i be? Is anyone else about to have this 2ed test? how did you mannage?

Quite a few people fail the first test and pass the second one. Even a jam toast beforehand can throw the first one out. They put me straight to the second one because they thought Bubs was looking very big.
And even if you did have GD, you'll be fine. A number of ladies do end up with it, but it's totally manageable. Honesetly, I'd probably be a little annoyed (at the potential diet changes etc... I like my sugar!!) but not too worried at all. It's something that is completely manageable if you know about it.

I didn't do the first test this time round (MW didn't think I needed to and I didn't want to hehe) but at 32-33 weeks I had a scan and baby was looking big so she sent me for the 2-hour test. I was more annoyed about having to drink that horrible drink and sit there for 2 hours than actually having GD. As Hopes said, it's very manageable and lots of people fly through the second test.
Either way you are definitely not a bad Mum!! These things happen and it's out of your control. Just take one day at a time and try not to worry

In my books, having pregnancy complications and high blood sugar does not make you a bad mum! If you are feeling down...and like you "might" be a "bad mum" might be a good idea to discuss those feelings with your MW - they are just as important as the physical side of pregnancy....and NZ has some very good systems for supporting mums pre and post-natally. Hang in there!

I know a couple of people that have gone in and had the drink and then come back after 2 hours. Seems awful to make you wait there that whole time!

In my case, I had two hours to sit and read a book without chasing a toddler - it was bliss (Pity about the icky drink, but I'd do it again for another two hours off!)

Red- the reason they usually make you stay is because they catch alot of women cheating. Can't believe people would be silly enough to myself.

I think doing any exercise ie. walking around can even change the result which is another reason why they make you stay.
Lol Hopes I hear you on the 2 hours off haha, I have to say it was nice to get a couple of hours reading and just sitting doing absolutely nothing - unheard of!!

Maybe ask if you can have a room to lie down in! Where I had mine done if they had a spare one they let you use it. Tell you don't feel well and have a sleep!
You're not a bad Mum AT ALL. I had GD - hated getting the diagnosis but nothing I had done caused me to get it (apart from family history) and nothing you would have done has caused this either. I remember feeling like that though. Good luck, you'll be awesome.

jessenia, I was diagnosed last Thursday. Cried for 2 days because my birth plan would go out the window as well as which hospital I would be at and maybe even my MW. It does get easier. You will adjust if you have it. Give yourself time to come to terms with it. Seriously there is nothing you could have done differently.

I failed the first test and had to re-do the fasting one twice as first results were high I still didn't get GD.
Have you been poas at your MW appointments? As they can also pick up any indicators for GD.
So many things can make the glucose test fail - most breakfast foods - oj, jam etc
It's nothing to do with being a good/bad Mum its one of those things that can happen in pregnancy and like everything else you deal with it as it comes.

jessenia - i had gd with ds and have already had sugar levels go up with this preg. if u need to ask any questions feel free. I have my sugars under control now but the slightest cold etc can make them go up.
I've been told to eat at 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 6pm and super b4 bed. It seems to be working. Little and often. Hopefully they will get u to see a dietician so they can work out what u can have to eat. They will talk to you about portion sizes to do with carbs. Look 4 low GI index. When do u have your appoint?

Bummer jessenia! Just think - if you are 31 weeks now, it's not too much longer in the grand scheme of things to have to change your diet etc. And, although it's not what you were expecting, its at least common enough that people know how to manage it...they'll give you good advice. You'll be fine & baby will too!!

Jessenia feel free to send me a message any time. Where abouts are you?
I thought I had come to terms with it and was coping well. Had my first appointment with the diabetic MW yesterday and my level was great. Came home and the first meal I was sick straight afterwards. Stress I suspect. Levels were then all over the place. Ended up having and emotional melt down at hubby. Only good thing is he then got more info on it and is taking it more seriously.
On a positive note, I am still with my normal MW. The diabetic MW is amazing and on call. I get another scan next Tuesday (bonus) and I quite like the look and feel of National Womens hospital.
Also been told so long as I can control my levels, I shouldn't have any problem with a natural birth and will be able to go home about 24 hours later.
As for food, 100gms of lean meat per meal is fine. Lots of vegies. Only 2 small pieces of fruit a day. Be carefull of carbs. Only a small amount. Someone said 30gms. Also I found some of the foods I really love, there is a healthier choice that is low in carbs and sugar so I have swapped alot of them.
Let me know how you get on.

I got GD, and am at high risk of getting it next time as well. Mine wasn't able to be controlled by diet, and so I was on insulin 3x per day, but like everyone else has said - it is manageable. Your MW probably won't be able to tell you much, you get referred to a specialist team who deal with GD regularly and can give you the best advice for your situation (as there are so many variables, and so many different ways to control it). It definitely doesn't make you a bad mum - cripes, if complications and GD make you a bad mum, I'm shocking!!! You will get monitored closely, as GD can affect the size of bubs, plus bubs will be monitored after birth to make sure their pancreas is doing the job and managing their blood sugar levels, but it's definitely not tooooo bad, provided you take the guidance of the specialists. Next time I want to TTC, I need to be under guidance from before even starting to TTC as my levels were so shocking and remained high afterwards, but even though it's scary, I know that it's for the wellbeing of both myself and future bubs.
