Author: minik8e
Subject: 41121
Posted: 12 December 2011 at 11:38pm

I got GD, and am at high risk of getting it next time as well. Mine wasn't able to be controlled by diet, and so I was on insulin 3x per day, but like everyone else has said - it is manageable. Your MW probably won't be able to tell you much, you get referred to a specialist team who deal with GD regularly and can give you the best advice for your situation (as there are so many variables, and so many different ways to control it). It definitely doesn't make you a bad mum - cripes, if complications and GD make you a bad mum, I'm shocking!!! You will get monitored closely, as GD can affect the size of bubs, plus bubs will be monitored after birth to make sure their pancreas is doing the job and managing their blood sugar levels, but it's definitely not tooooo bad, provided you take the guidance of the specialists. Next time I want to TTC, I need to be under guidance from before even starting to TTC as my levels were so shocking and remained high afterwards, but even though it's scary, I know that it's for the wellbeing of both myself and future bubs.

    Author: Cinderella
Subject: 41121
Posted: 09 December 2011 at 1:12pm

Jessenia feel free to send me a message any time. Where abouts are you?

I thought I had come to terms with it and was coping well. Had my first appointment with the diabetic MW yesterday and my level was great. Came home and the first meal I was sick straight afterwards. Stress I suspect. Levels were then all over the place. Ended up having and emotional melt down at hubby. Only good thing is he then got more info on it and is taking it more seriously.

On a positive note, I am still with my normal MW. The diabetic MW is amazing and on call. I get another scan next Tuesday (bonus) and I quite like the look and feel of National Womens hospital.
Also been told so long as I can control my levels, I shouldn't have any problem with a natural birth and will be able to go home about 24 hours later.

As for food, 100gms of lean meat per meal is fine. Lots of vegies. Only 2 small pieces of fruit a day. Be carefull of carbs. Only a small amount. Someone said 30gms. Also I found some of the foods I really love, there is a healthier choice that is low in carbs and sugar so I have swapped alot of them.

Let me know how you get on.

Even a jam toast beforehand can throw the first one out. They put me straight to the second one because they thought Bubs was looking very big.

And even if you did have GD, you'll be fine. A number of ladies do end up with it, but it's totally manageable. Honesetly, I'd probably be a little annoyed (at the potential diet changes etc... I like my sugar!!) but not too worried at all. It's something that is completely manageable if you know about it.

Edited by Hopes
