I'm told by my midwife that I need to transfer to Birthcare after I give birth at Auckland hospital, unless there are complications.

I'm feeling a little nervous about this. When I gave birth the first time I was feeling completely out of it and wheeled to the ward. I can't imagine being up for a drive with a newborn. Did others find it inconvenient to transfer straight after birth or was it not a big deal?

Also, is it relatively easy to get a private room at Birthcare? How busy are they usually?

Yes, I was told this as well and was a little worried about this too. You have a shower and everything and then leave to be looked after at Birthcare for a few days. My midwife said it's actually quite a nice thing. Hope she's right :)

Apparently birthcare is really nice, its like a hotel. you can do tours there to have a look around. the shared rooms (2 people) are free and subsidised by the government but if you want a private room you request it and i think its like $330 a night. All the info is on the Birthcare website though.

Birthcare is WONDERFUL. Do a tour before hand. Book a private room - expensive but worth it! Then hubby can stay. The transfer is not that bad. You are wheel-chaired to your car, and then it's a very short walk from car into Birthcare.
