What can I do to prevent my milk supply decreasing after exercise?
I dont normally do any sort of exercise. Did my first zumba class last Fri, but I didnt get much of a sweat up cos I was so clueless. Yesterday I did my second hr long class and worked a lot harder. Yesterday evening my supply had obviously dropped as Aiden wanted to keep feeding over several hrs, til he was finally satisfied enough to get to sleep.
What can I do?

I know you'd probably know that you're supposed to up your fluids during exercise anyway, but seeing as you're also bf make sure you drink TRUCKLOADS of water. Also make sure you increase the protein in your diet, very important with both things again (exercise and bf). You could try the usual supply boosters like milk flow spray (Naturopharm), almonds, lactation cookies, tigers milk, blessed thistle supplement, brewers yeast in smoothies etc, as well as things like oats and bananas.

Thanks- a lot of those things are hard on my limited diet. I was thinking of getting some of that milk flow spray. I dont think I have a problem with supply normally, but Aiden no longer has a 6 hr stretch between feeds at night, and is back to feeding 3 hrly at night, so maybe it would help. I dont want to give him formula or solids yet due to his intollerences and family history of allergys.

I just decided not to exercise til I stopped BFing, as the same thing happened to me when I did exercise for 1 week!

Apart from fluid and protein all I would suggest is eat heaps - if your body doesn't have enough energy and starts losing weight, it makes sense that it will struggle to produce enough milk. Maybe try things like complan or protein shakes.

Thanks guys. I cant drink cows milk or soy milk or eat bananas, but I do make an effort to make sure I have protein with each meal. Will have to increase it even more.

How much water should I be drinking?

Im not trying to loose weight, just tone up and get fit, plus its an hr of me time a week which is good too! Aiden was back to feeding normally yesterday and last night, so it was defintaly the exercise.

I'd be really surprised if an hours exercise could decrease your supply that much unless you were really dehydrated. I exercised quite a bit when BF DD and didn't notice any change. It could just be that it's coincided with that funny phase that babies go through round your baby's age - start waking all through the night. With many of my friends and my own DD they just came right again, it wasn't a hunger thing.

You could always call La Leche for advice or check out their book 'The womanly art of breastfeeding'.

I havent done any form of excercise at all since he was born tho, so an hr exercise was heaps for me! He went back to normal the following night. Hes defintaly waking more than normal in the last few weeks tho- and I know babies dot hat about this age, but the wanting to feed for 3 hrs, and not settling was new.

Kellz, just drink to thirst.
He may have been feeding more cause the milk tasted different and he wanted to check to see if it had returned to normal or he was trying to get rid of it, lol, sounds stupid but you produce a hormone called lactic acid when you exersize which makes your milk taste yuck.
Also, going by his age, he is also at another developmental stage where he will be trying to up your supply again and will probably start night waking again, so it may just be coincidental that it happens now. Your supply will have also settled in by now and you will note that your boobs are feeling softer anyway, not making less.
a little exersize shouldn't make alot of difference and also drinking lots of water is no longer attributed to "making milk", however, breastfeeding mothers do get thirstier quicker!!! and you need to be aware of drinking to thirst.

I was doing less than an hour of exercise - only 20-30mins - and it definitely affected my supply too. So whether it is "meant" to or not, I agree with you that it may be, cos I had the same thing! (Not that that helps you, but just letting you know I thought the same thing - and not exercising fixed it )

lol not exersizing fixes everything! To steal a phrase, when I get the urge to exersize, I lie down till it goes away...
I totally agree with you in saying that what isn't "meant to" often does. And often its when its a "new" thing.

This is definatly happening. How long will it last? I only got 4 1/2hrs total sleep last night and was supposed to be starting back at work today but cant on that little ammount of sleep.
We got to the point where Aiden was waking only once a night for a feed, lasted about a week then he got worse than ever a few weeks back, no longer doing a 6+hr stretch, but back to 3-4hrly feeds all night. I dont know waht Ive done wrong or what I can do to help it. He self settles well for all his sleeps.
I so dont want to loose my job

That is such bad luck that it's happening when you're going back to work For us it lasted about 3-4 weeks, not every night but most nights. I think I was more exhausted then than when she was a newborn!

If you are wanting to tone up ... you might have better luck weight training than doing a cardio class ... it also would probably leave your milk supply intact.

Kellz, big hugs, it is soo frustrating, I know. It is nothing you have done, it is something that almost all babies do around this age and it might last a week, it might last a month. The best thing to to is to try the old cluster feed thing again, tank him up late afternoon, early evening - not ideal when you have another and working too, but even in the early evening. The lots of feeding is related to him building up your supply. You can take things right back to basics and make sure he is draining each side before offering the other and having a good burp between sides so he's full of milk not air.
Um, will need to look in my book, but need to take the kids to soccor.
