Does it cost??

I think if you are referred then it is free. but if you choose to go that way instead of trying a midwife then it costs.

thanks guys !! I definatly wouldn't be seeing him if I wasn't referred, i feel fine with my mw's but apparantly its some type of legal thing they have to do.

Its probably just the mw being on the safe side. Could be because you are in a small town with only a visiting ob she wants you to be reviewed earlier than later to prevent any thing going wrong.
It shouldnt cost anything since you've been referred to an ob.

Ugh, stupid BMI. I got so tired of *everything* in my pregnancy being about my weight. I hope the OB goes well for you!

BMIs are a crock! I fall into the morbidly obese catagory too and if you saw me you'd say I could do with losing a few kgs but definitely not obese! I wear size 14-16....how is that morbidly obese. In fact most of the all blacks would be morbidly obese according to BMIs.....I hate the measurement.

That said, I've never heard of being referred due to weight...unless you had trouble conceiving or had GD. Even my MW who (bless her) is super cautious didnt throw that one at me...as she did about my "high risks" for being over 36. If I am lucky I may get a low birthwieght baby ..sounds good after the 9lb 2er I had.

Dont worry about it. Think of it as a bonus. Nice to have the obstetric team on your side too.

Your midwife MUST recommend referral to an Obstetrician if your BMI is over a certain amount. If your midwife didn't suggest it, then that is a bit of a gap in their care.

You don't though, have to go. I didn't, because I didn't see the point in going along at the end of my pregnancy to be told that I was overweight. But what they may do is refer you to an anaeshetist, who may like to do a comprehensive assessment in advance of your due date so that if there is any problem then they have you all checked out in advance.

Your scans that are for medical reasons (like your 20 week morphology scan or an emergency scan) should be free. Optional scans, like the Nuchal Translucency Scan attract a cost. Seeing the public OB is free.

Sometimes when your plan is to birth at a birth centre or smaller area hospital, a proper OB assessment helps to develop a plan of action in case there is likely to be complications with your care. It may be that there is a suggestion that you birth at a larger hospital.

I found it useful to write in my own notes what I did and didn't want so that it was quite clear. It would be really good to discuss those emergency backups though, because a very uncomfortable hour to transfer in an ambulance in labour would be horrid, and it would probably be about the same to get the helicopter there and back in an emergency?? Nobody can know what will happen during their birth, but being very familiar with all the options and timeframes etc can help you with your decision making in an emergency!

Good luck with the yucky drink test. I hated it!
