I have been referred to a OB by my midwife as my BMI was over a certain point and i was told that anyone who has a bmi over that amount has to be referred....
anyone, he comes to town from Dunedin and I have an appointment to see him Jan 31st, it will be the first time i see him or any ob, i was just wondering, i know prenatal care is supposed to be free here but does anyone know if you have to pay for a referral to an OB ?? I had to pay to have my NT scan done as i was sent to a private clinic as they couldn't do them here and i am hoping an OB is not the same as we can't afford it at all!. Any help is appreciated -------------

| I think if you are referred then it is free. but if you choose to go that way instead of trying a midwife then it costs. |

Yep, scans should be the only thing you have to pay for. If you choose to see an OB when you don't *need* to you have to pay, but if you are referred for medical reasons then it's funded. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

thanks guys !! I definatly wouldn't be seeing him if I wasn't referred, i feel fine with my mw's but apparantly its some type of legal thing they have to do.

It was my Body mass index? apparantly mine puts me as morbidly obese  so thats why i have to be referred...it could just be an Oamaru thing maybe ?-------------

Its probably just the mw being on the safe side. Could be because you are in a small town with only a visiting ob she wants you to be reviewed earlier than later to prevent any thing going wrong.

Yeah they wanted me to go to a dietician aswell but i know what i should and shouldn't eat and i didn't feel like i needed someone scrutinizing my every meal!!

BMIs are a crock! I fall into the morbidly obese catagory too and if you saw me you'd say I could do with losing a few kgs but definitely not obese! I wear size 14-16....how is that morbidly obese. In fact most of the all blacks would be morbidly obese according to BMIs.....I hate the measurement.
That said, I've never heard of being referred due to weight...unless you had trouble conceiving or had GD. Even my MW who (bless her) is super cautious didnt throw that one at me...as she did about my "high risks" for being over 36. If I am lucky I may get a low birthwieght baby  ..sounds good after the 9lb 2er I had.

nzpiper i really have no idea why she has referred me - this is our first baby and we got pregnant after the 2nd time not using protection so no problems concieving !! (it only took about 3 weeks), i've been tested for GD and so far I am not showing at sign of having it at all and im about to turn 20 so my age isn't a factor...she told us she had to refer us at our very first meeting!! Of course if its best for baby i'll do whatever it takes but now im just confused lol -------------

I wouldnt worry too much about it. My MW works alongside an OB up here, with "larger" women, they are a bit more subtle though, and all she does is talk to him to work out the range of weight that would be ideal to put on based on my pre pregnancy weight and BMI. Perhaps thats all the OB will do, and then just moniter you a bit more closely!

Your midwife MUST recommend referral to an Obstetrician if your BMI is over a certain amount. If your midwife didn't suggest it, then that is a bit of a gap in their care.
You don't though, have to go. I didn't, because I didn't see the point in going along at the end of my pregnancy to be told that I was overweight. But what they may do is refer you to an anaeshetist, who may like to do a comprehensive assessment in advance of your due date so that if there is any problem then they have you all checked out in advance. Your scans that are for medical reasons (like your 20 week morphology scan or an emergency scan) should be free. Optional scans, like the Nuchal Translucency Scan attract a cost. Seeing the public OB is free. Sometimes when your plan is to birth at a birth centre or smaller area hospital, a proper OB assessment helps to develop a plan of action in case there is likely to be complications with your care. It may be that there is a suggestion that you birth at a larger hospital. Hope this helps. ------------- www.makedomum.blogspot.co.nz |

She told me he would talk to me about my birth plans because our hospital here can't do c sections AT ALL so he's going to strongly suggest i birth at the dunedin hospital instead but i was told i have to tell him what i want and to be firm. She said that when he is in town and i see him (as he only comes up once a month or so) that he will monitor how the baby is growing and if he is getting big then it will be very strongly suggested that i birth in dunedin....he will also make me do a lot more checks for GD - I have had one 2 hour test already and it came back all clear but he'll get me to do more. -------------

I wouldn't like to have to drive from Oamaru to Dunedin in labour!! Gosh.
I found it useful to write in my own notes what I did and didn't want so that it was quite clear. It would be really good to discuss those emergency backups though, because a very uncomfortable hour to transfer in an ambulance in labour would be horrid, and it would probably be about the same to get the helicopter there and back in an emergency?? Nobody can know what will happen during their birth, but being very familiar with all the options and timeframes etc can help you with your decision making in an emergency! of course i want whatever is best for my baby but i wish it was as easy as every thing could be done at our hospital, although i guess i've had an easy pregnancy so far so i cant have it all!
