Momo Twins

Hi there,

I’ve just had a dating scan at 6 weeks earlier this week. Our excitement of seeing our baby’s heartbeat for the first time turned into elation when the technician showed us the second heart beating away… confirming we’re conceiving twins! But from then on it all went downhill. Both of them are definitely sharing the same sac and there doesn’t seem to be a membrane separating them.

The technician told us that it seems like we’re having Mono-Mono twins. She told us it’s high risk and that I’ll need to be referred to the National Women’s.

Needless to say, as soon as I get my hands on the computer I went straight to google. Found out a lot of scary details about Monochorionic Monoamiotic twins (or Momo twins).

I have read some old posts on here that a while ago a woman seemed to be having the same (Momo twins). Emma/Maya, do you know if this lady is still active on here, is there a way to find out what’s happened to her? I’m very worried and have no idea what’s happening. I know essentially there’s nothing I could do except to be sensible, and look after myself.

But my GP has since referred me to the National Women’s High Risk but no one has contacted me yet. Can I be proactive in calling someone? I have no midwife, my GP says there’s no point engaging in an independent midwife as I’ll be getting a high risk hospital midwife anyway… but so far no midwife, no one contacted me

Can anyone of you out there tell me if you’ve had the same experience and have anyone of you been through the same thing and can let me know what happens next?

Her twins are now 4, but from memory, I think it turned out that her twins were monochorionic-diamniotic rather than mono mono. There's a link here to the birth story of her twins.

Hopefully they'll be some other people with experience - there's a twins/triplets section on here where those Mummies may be able to share experiences.

It's great to hear about your friend having a successful delivery of both babies. Do you know if she had to be in inpatient care from 26 weeks?

Sorry I dont know anything about Twins, but I am under the high risk team at National Womans for gestational diabetes and I can re-assure you that so far in my experience they have been fantastic.

They contacted me 2-3 days after recieving my refferal and you will be seen very quickly after that 1st convo, so dont panic too much, the Ultrasound place might just be slack sending the refferal + mail is slow at this time of year.

I'm glad I came in here!! I had a scan at 7 weeks which showed tiny but perfect twins, which were believed to be mo/mo twins. I also read up a lot about it, and freaked out!! I had a follow up scan at 9 weeks to double check the absence of the membrane, and it *just* showed the presence of an extremely thin membrane. It is VERY common to miss the presence of a membrane so early, because they are extraordinarily thin - mine was about half a mm thick at its thickest, later on in pregnancy. In fact, the girls dad and I became expert at pointing it out to the sonographers, as they usually couldn't find it hehe

Have they referred you for a follow up scan? It may pay to request one for a few weeks time, when things are bigger in there - at 6 weeks, the bubs are only very small, and the membrane is in proportion - so tiny tiny tiny!!!

The biggest risk if my girls did end up being mo/mo twins was that of the cords getting tangled, but you would be very closely monitored (weekly scans) to check how this is going. I ended up having fortnightly scans through my entire pregnancy anyway, due to my own health issues (the girls were born at 33w4d) which kept an eye on things.

Sorry dont know much about the twins - but Maya (used to be a moderator) - now lives in Australia with her family, her twin girls (the gremlins) are 4! I am pretty sure if you sent her a PM she would get it, but it may take her a while to get back to you at the moment (she has 4 girls and its a busy time of the year!)

If it helps - she used Yvonne Daji as her midwife - she is based out near Lincoln Road in Henderson (I am not sure where you are!) but she is highly recommended!

 

Hi my friend had that type of twins, she was referred to hospital team but still used her independent mw as well. She I think was having weekly scans and appointments (I see her tomorrow so will ask). Her twins were born at 34weeks cos of twin to twin transfusion and were born via c/s as one was not too happy in there. Both are very well 13 month olds now.

oh crap, I forgot to ask till I saw this. I'm seeing her on Sunday though, I will endeavour to remember.
