Hi there,
I’ve just had a dating scan at 6 weeks earlier this week. Our excitement of seeing our baby’s heartbeat for the first time turned into elation when the technician showed us the second heart beating away… confirming we’re conceiving twins! But from then on it all went downhill. Both of them are definitely sharing the same sac and there doesn’t seem to be a membrane separating them.
The technician told us that it seems like we’re having Mono-Mono twins. She told us it’s high risk and that I’ll need to be referred to the National Women’s.
Needless to say, as soon as I get my hands on the computer I went straight to google. Found out a lot of scary details about Monochorionic Monoamiotic twins (or Momo twins).
I have read some old posts on here that a while ago a woman seemed to be having the same (Momo twins). Emma/Maya, do you know if this lady is still active on here, is there a way to find out what’s happened to her? I’m very worried and have no idea what’s happening. I know essentially there’s nothing I could do except to be sensible, and look after myself.
But my GP has since referred me to the National Women’s High Risk but no one has contacted me yet. Can I be proactive in calling someone? I have no midwife, my GP says there’s no point engaging in an independent midwife as I’ll be getting a high risk hospital midwife anyway… but so far no midwife, no one contacted me
Can anyone of you out there tell me if you’ve had the same experience and have anyone of you been through the same thing and can let me know what happens next?

Hi Momo Mum, congrats on your pg.
I can't be too helpful, however I can tell you that Emma/Maya had her twins and they must be about 3-4yrs old now - someone please correct me if I am wrong. I haven't seen her on here for a while but we may just not 'move' in the same threads. Try and pm her

Congratulations!
Emma doesn't really post on here anymore, but she should get a PM
Her twins are now 4, but from memory, I think it turned out that her twins were monochorionic-diamniotic rather than mono mono. There's a link http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/article.aspx?ContentID=1647 - here to the birth story of her twins.
Hopefully they'll be some other people with experience - there's a twins/triplets section on here where those Mummies may be able to share experiences.

Thanks for your messages!
I actually meant that I read a thread on here posted by someone else named Kitan, but Emma/Maya as a moderator actually commented on it... so I thought she's still a moderator and would be able to help me find this other user. Here's the thread:

Sorry for the confusion! Emma is no longer a moderator, so won't be able to help you in that sense, but have you tried PMing the original poster? I think that would be the only way to contact her? Good luck!

i do know of someone that had twins that shared the same sac with no mebrance betwwen them. she was with high risk pregnancy unit, she was watched closely and her babies were delivered at 33-34wks via csec, both babies were fine and will be about 3 or 4 now. i think the risk is the babies getting tangled in each others cords. i didnt think they would be able to tell if babies shared a mebrance at 6wks. i do know a few people who were told that and turned out there was mebrance between them.

Thank you so much Rorylex - that's certainly a hope I'm clinging to. Just the waiting from now till the next scan is SO hard!
It's great to hear about your friend having a successful delivery of both babies. Do you know if she had to be in inpatient care from 26 weeks?

I think minik8's twins were suspected to be mono-mono and then it turned out they weren't??
I agree though, post on the twins/multiples page and one of the ladies there will no doubt answer or be able to put you in touch with someone who has been in a similar situation.
Oh, the other option would be to contact your local multiple birth club, they'd be able to put you in touch with another twin mamma who had mono-mono.

Sorry I dont know anything about Twins, but I am under the high risk team at National Womans for gestational diabetes and I can re-assure you that so far in my experience they have been fantastic.
They contacted me 2-3 days after recieving my refferal and you will be seen very quickly after that 1st convo, so dont panic too much, the Ultrasound place might just be slack sending the refferal + mail is slow at this time of year.
Otherwise good luck, im sure everything will be fine.

From what little I know (not personally but in my line of work) MoMo twins are extremely rare and yes do carry a lot of risks which I'm sure you have read all about. You will require strict monitoring throughout your pregnancy although this is more intensive once you reach viability (24wks) and often will involving inpatient monitoring. I'm sure the High Risk will contact you in the next few weeks as there is not a lot they can do at this stage in pregnancy.
As you are only 6 weeks it is quite possible that the dividing membrane was not able to be seen on scan so fingers crossed there is one there on your next scan, it will make your pregnancy much less stressful!
MoMo twins are always delivered early by c-section around 32-34wks gestation due to the risk of cord compression and entanglement as things get a little snug in there after that.
I'm not sure if you came across this facebook page in your googling but it might be helpful for you to chat with other Mums: http://www.facebook.com/monoamnioticTwins - MoMo Twins This is also another informative website: http://monoamniotic.org/public/welcome.html - Monoamniotic.org
Congratulations and Good luck. I wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy

I'm glad I came in here!! I had a scan at 7 weeks which showed tiny but perfect twins, which were believed to be mo/mo twins. I also read up a lot about it, and freaked out!! I had a follow up scan at 9 weeks to double check the absence of the membrane, and it *just* showed the presence of an extremely thin membrane. It is VERY common to miss the presence of a membrane so early, because they are extraordinarily thin - mine was about half a mm thick at its thickest, later on in pregnancy. In fact, the girls dad and I became expert at pointing it out to the sonographers, as they usually couldn't find it hehe
Have they referred you for a follow up scan? It may pay to request one for a few weeks time, when things are bigger in there - at 6 weeks, the bubs are only very small, and the membrane is in proportion - so tiny tiny tiny!!!
The biggest risk if my girls did end up being mo/mo twins was that of the cords getting tangled, but you would be very closely monitored (weekly scans) to check how this is going. I ended up having fortnightly scans through my entire pregnancy anyway, due to my own health issues (the girls were born at 33w4d) which kept an eye on things.
Good luck though - twins are the best thing ever

Thanks for all your kind words! Mrs B, thanks for pointing out the facebook page. I will definitely have a nosey in there.
Oh Minik8e, I’m so glad you’ve dropped by! You’re just like a ray of sunshine on a bleak day… I’m definitely hoping for a membrane in that next scan. I’ve been reading quite a bit on the monoamniotic.org website and whilst there are quite a few of “happily misdiagnosed” posts, they seem so unreal because they live in a different part of the world. To have a fellow Kiwi who went through that is awesome.
Although, I must say that with the many success stories, it’s allayed my worry somewhat. I think with the inpatient monitoring surely the chances of survival has increased. Anyway, it’s still premature for me to worry about that at this stage. Hopefully I was misdiagnosed too.
I still haven’t been contacted by National Women’s high risk so it’s quite lonely without a midwife or someone I could talk to for reassurance. Looks like there will be nothing until after the holidays. I’ll just have to be patient (eeek!)

Sorry dont know much about the twins - but Maya (used to be a moderator) - now lives in Australia with her family, her twin girls (the gremlins) are 4! I am pretty sure if you sent her a PM she would get it, but it may take her a while to get back to you at the moment (she has 4 girls and its a busy time of the year!)
If it helps - she used Yvonne Daji as her midwife - she is based out near Lincoln Road in Henderson (I am not sure where you are!) but she is highly recommended!

HI girls!
Had another scan on Monday (at week 10) and they found a thin membrane!!!
Yay, I guess I'm now no longer carrying Momo twins, but MoDi ones just like Minik8.
Minik8, do you get referred to high risk still, or were you with the normal midwives? Also do you still have to checked at the hospital weekly or fortnightly and from when?

Hi my friend had that type of twins, she was referred to hospital team but still used her independent mw as well. She I think was having weekly scans and appointments (I see her tomorrow so will ask). Her twins were born at 34weeks cos of twin to twin transfusion and were born via c/s as one was not too happy in there. Both are very well 13 month olds now.

Hi Momo mum
Firstly Congrats
Secondly, if you ARE having Mo-mo twins, then one of the ladies in our MBC has just had Momo twins and I am sure that she would talk to you, she had them at Auckland hospital last month. PM me and I can give her your number
Thirdly, come join us in the twins section, as we have all sorts of twins and happy to help you with any advise you need.
My twins are ID, and also had twin to twin so were under the High Risk team at National Womans AKL, they were born at 28weeks 5 days, and now are happy healthy 2.5 year old troublemakers!
