Topic: Shower/Water on head Posted: 01 January 2009 at 7:59pm |
Ethan will not have a shower and he hates water being poured on his head.
Does anyone elses child do this??
How is the best way to get him used to it? Should I just keep trying to get water on his head?
Would be nice to be able to put him in the shower rather than having to run a bath every night and also be able to wash his hair without a fight.

Yup Bella is going through a real fear of ALL water at the moment, and I'm hoping its a phase. At the moment we bath/shower her as normal, but probably more quickly than before! I try not to make a fuss about the whole thing.
I know my niece went through a fear of water for about a year, and now she is loving the water and is already advancing quickly in her swimming group, so it don't think its anything to worry about - just a phase...

We don't have this problem as Spencer is a real water rat but at swimming they have big yoghurt pots with holes in the bottom and get them use to water being poured on them with songs to go along with it.
So we sing, "this is the way we wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands" then "this is the way we wash our arms, wash our arms, wash ours arms," and so on. So you could try that and slowly build up to doing the shoulders, neck, head then face.
Encouraging water play outside while the weather is nice might help too.

We go through phases of water phobias. At the moment Levi is terrified of sitting down in the water. We just slowely encourage him to do it himself ie pouring water on his head, spraying himself etc when he is scared. He is such a water baby too but I think its just experiencing fear for the first time that is more the issue. Hopefully it will come right with time.

We have this Octopus (may be Tommee Tippee) that has holes in it like a very weak shower head and we've just started using it on Keziah to get her used to having water on her head/face.
Here's a video of the kids using it yesterday
(I suggest u turn ur volume down lol)

Caleb hates having his hair washed. We put him in the bath with a hand held shower most nights which saves running the bath every night and means he doesn't have water on his head. I let him sit there playing with his toys and the hand held shower then I give him a quick wash just before I get him out. Its easy to get shampoo out of his hair with the hand held.

DD was great with water on her, we kinda got her used to splashes from very young, but she wanted to wash her own hair one day the other week and got shampoo in her eyes and now she hates washing her hair or having a shower, ggrrr!

mikey has always been like this and, unfortunately, he hasn't grown out of it.....yet. i don't know what it is but he just hates the water running down his face. i just put him in the bath usually and just wash him with a face cloth. sometimes DP takes him in the shower when im busy with maia and boy is there some grizzling! it's getting better though and distraction works well, like giving him his own bar of soap and letting him wash himself first.
good luck!

We put Cath in a washbasin in one corner and direct the shower head to the opposite corner while one of us has a shower. It's a corner shower (3ish sides) and she has a few toys in the basin with her. We pass her her toothbrush and she does her teeth (6!) and pass her a facecloth and she sploshes the water with it. She gets some water on her face (the stuff that bounces off me) but it's not too ferocious as I turn it right down. The shower head is also detachable and when I've finished she gets to play with it while I'm drying off. Caths now 18 months and we've had her in the shower like this since she was 6 months old.

Have you tried getting in the shower with him?
We did that with Isabelle in the beginning .. she prefers a bath, but will tolerate the shower

Kahtrell doesn't really like the shower on his head...otherwise he loves water. I usually just wet his hair down with a flannel, wash it, and then rinse it off with the flannel or a cup type thing.

Amy is a bit funny about water on her head too - some days are worse than others . In the bath we have to water containers - one for us to pour over her and one for her to do herself. Having her own seems to help a bit.
If she had a shower with Jon we get her to *wash the shower* - we have a glass shower door and whilst she is using a spare flanel to wash the *window* Jon gets on with washing her hair. She doesn't seem to notice what is happening on her head as she is having so much fun - *I busy mummy*!!

My Michael is the same age and hates the shower so much that you would think we were killing he truely scream's even if we get in with him so we just don' push it as far as washin hair goes to be honest we don't find it needs to be done all that often now we cut it and when we do we jsut do it a quick as possible.
