Topic: Too many bottles? Posted: 20 May 2011 at 8:27am |
My 14 month old DS still has 3 bottles (1800ml) of milk a day. He has one when he wakes up, one after lunch and one after dinner. How many bottles is your toddler having? And should I be swapping him onto a sippy cup rather than the bottle?

My DS is 15 months and only has milk in a bottle before bed. The rest of the day, he has water from a drink bottle or a sippy cup. You could try him with a cup during the day and keep the bed time bottle?

DD is 18mo and still has 2-3 a day? She drinks water all day but usually has 150ml of milk morning and night and often midday too. I was starting to think i'd start weaning her off it but then visited a girlfriend and her 2year old DD is still having bottles of milk so i think i'll see how we go over the next few months and hopefully she'll cut down herself.

I think as long as it is not affecting their appetite for solids then it is not an issue. Milk is good for them and i read recently that they recommend kids should have about 400ml a day till 14 years old!
My 15mo is having 2x 200ml milk drinks a day - from sippy and bottle.

Thanks Ladies! Its good to know that I'm doing the right thing. He probably should be eating a bit more solid food so for starters, I think I might cut out his morning milk and replace with a nice healthy breakfast and go from there.

my plunket nurse yesterday said they (well its what she said at our 12m check) should be having about 600ml of milk inc other dairy (so including breast milk, formula, cows milk, cheese, youghurt etc)
and that covers their nutritional requirements...

That's really helpful thanks everyone
I started in the weekend cutting out his morning bottle, leaving him with a lunch and bottle before bed and let's say...he wasn't so keen! He loves his morning one, as do I (such a nice time together!). I'm thinking the lunch one could disappear a little easier without him noticing so much.
So bottles are still okay, in the bottle rather than a sippy cup?

could you try reducing the amount in it? then that would slowly wean him off a bottle (or you could reduce all of them and keep all of them?) I dunno, just an idea

Unfortunetly try and get them off the bottle before it becomes a habit, still have milk but with a sippy cup. My DD who is over 2 just love her bottle it has become a comfort to her, she still wouldnt sleep thru until I stopped giving her one overnight and still she demands bottles thru out the day, I will admit I am totally weak for not putting a stop to it. Its a habit now so just warning you guys

Ditto Salz, my dd2 is over 2 and should really stop her bottles, but she just screams till she gets one. Still has 3-4 150ml bottles a day and yep it really does affect her eating now, with my others they had been weaned off bottles by 12 months.

My DD is 17mo and dropped down to 2 bottles a day at 12 months. She has a morning (just before a nap preferably, so sometimes lunch) bottle and a before bed bottle. No bottle first thing in the morning before food as she doesn't eat enough in the mornings as it is

Didn't read all other posts but my DD is still having 3 bottles a day. Only 150ml per bottle and only after getting her to have as much of her solids as possible. She is lactose intolerant so she gets her calcium from her kids soy milk
My Plunket nurse told me toddlers still need a minimum of 400-600ml a day. We are happy to keep going with it as long as possible because its so good for and we have always had a battle with her gaining weight so won't be cutting anything out for the foreseeable future.
