Hello ladies I'm wondering about when to book in for antenatal classes & how/when to register with Plunket??? I don't want to get all over excited like I tend to do and get it all done too soon, but certainly don't want to miss out..... can anyone suggest what time frame would be right?

Your midwife will book you with Plunket when your baby is a few weeks old. I booked antenatal classes at about 18 weeks I think, and did them at 24 weeks as I was due in February and wanted to get the classes done before xmas.
If you want to hire a Plunket carseat I would ring your local Plunket now and arrange it as they tend to be booked out early.

Hey Clare....I just booked my car seat (capsule) last week from plunket at Papatoetoe and they had loads of stock.....I was a bit late and just got in for my antenatal classes and started them at 28 weeks, they went on for 4 weeks (3 hour classes) so that was not too bad....
I did not even know I had to register with plunket so this is news to me....LOL!

That sounds fab!
I have another question ladies - sorry to be so demanding!! But when I should I go for my first scan?? I'm getting really annoyed with my GP, who quite frankly isn't taking me seriously at all. I had to change GP's as my previous one was on Queen St, and I now work in Mt Roskill so was easier to change. I am not supposed to be able to have children, as I've had cervical cancer and had a lot of surgery on my cervix. So as you can imagine I've been looking for lots of reasurrance that all is ok as things progress. I had to push and push her before she referred me to the High Risk Clinic, and so far have had no joy in even being told what tests to expect, when I need to book in for antenatal classes or anything I'm feeling really bitter about it all!! Can anyone give me any advice on what I should be doing? I read on mzmitch's first post that she's already been for a scan and we're due round the same time.... That makes me think I should have been already too......

Clare in all honesty...your doc seems a bit of a slack. If you are in high risk clinic they should have sent you to scans by now. I am also in high risk clinic and had several scans to make sure my placenta is right, baby is growing fine etc etc.....I had my first scan at 7 weeks (but that was because I did not know how pregnant I was) and then one at 8 weeks and 10 weeks (when I started bleeding). But I know that you should have had atleast one scan by now to make sure all is well.
Have you been assigned a midwife? ask her to give you a form and book a scan. Your next scan should be at 18 weeks unless they have concerns. Have you done your bloods yet? Dont worry too much about the Antenatal classes yet as you have loads of time. Your main target at the moment should be to reach 24 weeks....then you know you and bub is fine. (Well atleast that was what I got told).
just keep bugging your docs and stress to them that you are concerned and need some action NOW! Remember it is your baby and your health not theirs!
Sorry to go on and on.....good luck!

I've only been referred to high risk (well, at least she SAID she was referring me). I haven't heard from them yet. I've had the antenatal bloods done (my old gp did them when I first found out I was pregnant). No midwife yet - am I supposed to find someone or does my gp do that or what???? I'm getting all upset about this now

I was told that you have to find your own midwife but not when you are at high risk clinic...they have special midwife. My midwife told me that she will be there when I give birth but it will be a doc who will deliver my baby (since I am at high Risk clinic).
Dont be upset clare....at times our health system is not the best....but I was taken care of quite well, I must admit. I went to high Risk clinic every 4 weeks for 1st and 2nd Trimester and then every 2 weeks. I had a scan every 4 weeks from 20 weeks on...and was assigned a midwife on my first appt at the clinic.
Please call your GP and bug them until they give you an answer. Are you going to be at Akl hospital? If you are then call their maternity ward and tell them that you were going to be refered to the high risk clinic and you have heard nothing. I called them a few times when I was waiting to hear from them....

Thanks Roksana, you're a darling I just called them, and I have an appointment on the 10th of October, with a Domino midwife or something... does that sound right? Sorry for getting all upset - I just hate not having a clue as to what I's supposed to be doing. Also, my partner called and harassed the doctors this morning and we have an appt for a scan this coming Monday. Will finally get to see my baby!!

Good on you!!!
I know how you must have felt...I would have been angry too!!!
Good on your partner....some time you just need to give them a piece of your mind to get things going....
I have my scan this Monday too. We can let each other know how it went....
By the way if you are under Akl hospital then you also get free 3D Scans (not us Sth Aklders)....
You know where the Mt Roskill Valentines is? they are just next door. for your 18 week scan book it with them...its so much nicer to get a 3D video then a black and white 2D one.

Domino midwives are the hospital team, so you should be well looked after. Good luck with everything!
I had my first scan at 8 weeks as I was having a kidney ultrasound and couldn't resist the opportunity to see bubs. If you are worried, ask your midwife and she should refer you for a scan to help ease your mind.

Just had a thought, there is a Pregnancy "Counselling" Hotline - not sure of their phone number, should be in the phone book or on google.
Can just ring them and ask what steps you should take next.
Another option is to go to a community birth services type place (we have one here in PN). They are good.
All the best

it's so neat.
Roksana, Ayja was just a tiny wee dot, too small as far as i'm concerned... don't stress too much. adding to that.. Paris was far easier to push out, and she was my first and was 3380, so middle weights are pretty good, not so big their head gets stuck, yet not so small you can't feel what you're pushing
So have you thought of any names or are you keeping them hush? lol

Really looking forward to it now. A little nervous about being a mum and stuff but I am over being pregnant now! Baby still hasnt dropped so still really sore, but it can come now cos its room is ready!! I have thought right from the start that it is going to be early but not so sure now Have started to get really emotional tho and cry over everything, and been getting a few crampy type pains and very nesty, so hopefully its not too far away. As soon as I hit 36 weeks the movements bub make are fewer....well not really.... but painful.....
I cant imagine what you must feel like, hopefully bub drops soon. so I guess the bubs head is not engaged yet and you have 18 days to go....hmmmm....you might have to carry it for another 18 days (Tho I hope not).
Tho my tummy has dropped and my pelvic bones are getting ready (it is so uncomfortable and at times painful)...the baby is not engaged yet....so no early baby fro me too.....
Oh God I think the anticipation (sp?) would have killed me, if I did not know what I am having.

So many people said to me that if your tummy is high...so if you are carrying the baby high...it is a Girl! If is low then it is a boy. So far I know three ladies who are carrying low and are having boys. I am carrying mine quite high and I am having a girl....so Aimee...you just might have a girl!! But then you never know.

Thanks Ana - it's still not showing any signs of going away. I've burnt the inside of of my throat from the acid from vomiting so much, so now it's hard to swallow, eat etc and hurts when throwing up. I had an infuriating conversation with "sister in law" the other day - I called to tell her our news (have held back til we knew all was ok) and she was asking about MS, and I said yeah, I had it bad, and she said she didn't get sick at all, but was really tired, and "apparently the tiredness is sooooooooooooooo much worse than morning sickness". I saw so many friends with MS...and was glad that I never had it...it just looked awful and they had the worst time......I always feel bad for ladies who have/had MS.

Clare, that is such rubbish! I feel so sorry for you with the MS - I had it as well but no way near as bad as you do. Tiredness is so much easier to handle than throwing up all day and feeling like crap. I remember thinking one day as I had my head in the loo at work that there is no way I could do this again and if this is pregnancy, I dont want it - but it did get lots better.Really do hope it starts to ease up soon.

Nah, she meant for everyone. Her and her friends all talked about it apparently, and it's much worse to be tired than vomiting 10 times a day for 12 weeks. And, you see, she knows EVERYTHING (me and Jono call her IKE - I Know Everything) Don't mind me girls, I'm a tad b*tchy today!!! Blame it on the hormones

We went to visit my aunty when she was about 3 mths preg and I had just had Maya. She was moaninh about how awful her MS was, and I was like "well you're out of bed and you're eating and not throwing up, it can't be that bad!". She's another IKE, and even worse, she's a real martyr so whatevers wrong with you is always ten times worse for her.

"oh little Madison started walking in the womb and can now, at two months, recite hamlet, can't your child do that???"

argh, yep. paris never rolled or crawled or anything really, she just sat... and i got that so often... people would look at me weird cos here was this kid that they thought should be moving about and all, and she would just sit.. and since she was shy she wouldn't make a squeak.

Okay I have a question....tho the weather is really bad here in Akl, I have to wash my baby cloths/sheets etc.
I want to know what washing powder to use? I dont wanna use my daily powder as I dont know if my bub will be allergic to it. Also I want to wash some soft toys (I have loads + I got given more for bub)....can I wash them in normal powder and then put a little detol in the wash?
I am planning to wipe all the drawers with hot water and detol before putting bubs stuff in it...would that be okay? Yes I am paranoid......

Use a sensitive washing powder. We use Persil Low Suds Sensitive as we have a front loader. I suppose dettol is fine?? Dunno about that one. I just washed the soft toys in the normal washing powder (sensitive), should be enough.

we just use our normal washing powder - cold power, but don't put quite as much in. otherwise you could use just a little nappy san in the wash instead - we tried persil gentle - but lol, it actually made both my kids break out in a rash - so much for being "gentle"
For the soft toys - if they are your old ones, then i have heard people say to freeze them(?) to kill any nasties, then just wash them as normal, if they are new ones, then for the most part you would think that they shouldn't really have any old germies in them - you also have to think that, well, you can't sterilise everything, and how much of it is baby going to be putting in their mouth in the early stages anyway - by the time they get to the stage where EVERYTHING is going in their mouth - you will find it isn't much use trying to make sure everything is pristine - cos they pick up germies anyway. just make sure everything is as clean as it can be.
For the drawers - watch out wetting them too much or they may actually store the moisture in them and could make the clothes damp and get get mouldy. you could try like a wet dust.. just wet the sponge and really wring it out well so it is just damp, then use that to wipe the drawers over on the inside to get rid of any dust or dirt inside them. we went to spotlight and got some calico - it's really cheap - about $1.75 a metre, and just lined the drawers with that. we then got some johnsons baby soaps, and opened one end, and left them in their boxes, and just stood the boxes up, 2 in each drawer in amongst the clothes to make the clothes smell all nice and also keeps silverfish away. it's good to clean but don't do overboard... kids need to be exposed to some of the things that are out there - otherrwise they will never build up an immunity to it. (i take it the nesting instinct has kicked in then? lolol)

It kicked in weeks ago Janine....I just cant get my place clean enough. My friends say they could eat off my floor....LOL
The drawers are already lined, as it was originally ours and now we moved it to bubs room. The soft toys (not too old...may be 8 years or so)were washed every year, but I dont wanna put any thing in bubs room unless I washed it first. And you are right Janine, its not like she will play with it any time soon!!!
I use cold power advance, but wasnt too sure if it would be okay for bub, I might just go and by nappy san. Silverfish??? never thought of that.....OH God I dont feel ready at all. I havent even packed my bags......arrrgggg

Yeah, I agree janine. i read that an increase in allergies and asthma could be the result of over-sterilisation in the household. people aren't as used to the germs as they used to be and don't build such a resistance.
I let that make me feel better about Jake finding bits of old toast and eating them....I swear he hides them and finds them later, as I clean EVERY night and can't find anything. he wakes up and somehow has toast. he's like a squirrel or something.

I found the best thing to was to put all the clothes through a hot wash with a tiny amount of lux flakes and hand washed the knitted stuff also using lux flakes. I had very sensitive skin when I was young and this is what what my mum used and I found it worked well for my little girl too. As for the toys some of them have stuffing in the that won't dry completely and can grow mould inside them so might be best to wash the surface of them instead. . .according to treasures mag anyway.

you could use your normal washing powder and put it throught an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the powder residue is out... and i always throw teddy bears in the machine.

I just washed all the clothes and teddies in Persil Sensitive. I agree about the over-sterilisation and allergies thing too.

I used lux flakes also until Kaylin was about 6 months old then just went to normal powder - Cold Power I think.. Wash house is too far to go and have a look..
I also throw a bit of napisan in with his clothes..

We use Napisan for everything!
Must admit to being a bit of a nutter about washing powder tho - I use Purity Sensitive which you can't buy here. I bring it back from Australia in bulk every time I go. The guys at customs think I am a little odd (I bring back around 12 litres at a time!). But it smells great, and Maya doesn't react to it (she gets eczema from just about everything else).
The Ecostore stuff is great too, but a bit pricey.
