Hi everyone. Well, it looks as if there is no one on this forum at the moment that is currently going through an IVF cycle.
But this is such a warm and welcoming place that I feel I should still contribute - and therefore I would like to share my experience with you guys. Who knows, there may be some amongst you that are considering IVF and would be interested in a "running report".
After three years of TTC (one failed IUI) we finally decided to give IVF a go. I didn't like all the drugs etc. with the IUI and when we did that I thought there is no way that I will every do IVF.
But here I am. I figured that if I don't try this now (I am 40 now) there won't be another chance and I will regret it one day. We were lucky enough to get public funding (also a big decision factor for IVF Yes or No) and after a six months waiting period, I'm ON.
They decided that the "microdose flare" method was best for me which meant going on the contraceptive pill (ironic really!) for three weeks before starting injections. This was to "downregulate" my system.
Last Wednesday I started the injections.
I used to be SO paranoid about needles, but since I've been blood-tested - I don't know how many times - I can actually watch the nurse put the needle in my arm without feeling queezy. And I guarantee to all those who think that the injections will be the worst horror: it's not. The needles are tiny and before you know it it's over.
When we did the IUI my husband gave me the injections but Murphy's Law wanted it that he was away last week and so I had to do it myself - wasn't so sure about that.
But anyway, I managed in the end.
So I started Buserelin on Wednesday (small siringes, tiny needle) and then Puregon on Friday (Purgeon pen). The Puregon pen is a rather chunky injection device that is supposed to make your life easier, but it ain't as far as I am concerned... Had problems with pushing the button down to administer my first dose, nearly broke out in a panic (since it was Friday night, me alone at home and the damn thing wasn't working), but I managed somehow and went to the Fertility Associates Clinic (FA) the next day to get the pen replaced. Of course, it worked fine when the nurse tried it...
Anyway, so far so good. Had a blood test this morning and a phone call from FA this afternoon with instructions to increase my dose of Puregon (from 225 units to 300 units) for the next three days. Then another blood test.
Phew! Sorry about going on forever, I am hoping some of you might find this interesting...
How am I feeling? Good so far. I haven't read up much on side-effects because I am the kind of person that gets every side-effect there is once I know about them...
This afternoon a slight bloating feeling kicked in but could be anything really. We'll see. Basically, I need to produce as many eggs as possible in the next week so there's bound to be some effects... Will keep you all posted.
Thanks for being there with me!

wow thanks for all the info evolsen, its always intresting to hear about different treatments, I know a couple of the ladies on here are waiting for IVF so they will find your journey really intresting too. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I am currently waiting to see what my next step in fertility treatment is as i have done 5 rounds of high dosage clomid all with no ovulation and am thinking (self diagnosis here ) injectables may be the next step so i'm glad the needles aren't that bad (not sure whether the same sort of needles are used or not )but i'll find out at my appointment next week! oops sorry didnt mean to turn it into a thread about me just wanted to say about you easing my mind about the needles.
You sound like you are doing well, I hope your side effects dont get too bad (i like your theory tho, not knowing about them ) and i'll keep my fingers crossed for lots of eggs for you!

Thanks LeeLee!
And I am glad I could put your mind at ease about the needles, noodle.
I was on Clomiphen for nine months(!) as well and though I was ovulating, there was no other success...
Before that I tried accupuncture and chinese herbs - also to no avail...
So this is my last go, really - if that doesn't work it's plan B - big house in the country and a paddock full of horses

I really hope plan A works for you!
Just a question what mg of clomid were you on and what were the side effects like in comparison to the injectible drugs?

Evolsen another really good site for those going through IVF is the bulletin board on www.everybody.co.nz
There is always heaps of ladies going through IVF cycles at any given time on that board. They are a really knowledgeable and helpful bunch, so it may be worth checking out.
Good luck!

Thanks Lulu! Will definitely check that site out
My dose of Chlomiphene, noodle, was 50mg for the entire time. I don't know if that's particularly high or low.
I had virtually no side effects except hot flushes at night (but it was also summer). So I guess, I was pretty lucky there. What is your dose and what are your side-effects? Hope, it's not tormenting you too much!
The thing about doing IVF is that you know you will only take the drugs are over in two/three weeks so I think I'll be able to cope with the side effects - she says not even a week into the treatment

The last round i did a couple of weeks ago was 150mg and got heaps of side effects, i felt horrible but it only lasted for about a week, so that was ok.
It is alot eaiser to handle when you know there is an end in sight! and you sound very positive and i reckon positive thinking always helps

Gee. That means that my dose was probably quite low...
I'm not surprised that you were feeling horrible. I had heard horrible things about Chlomid...
As for my positive attitude - hm, sometimes I don't know if it's just a matter of being too busy to get my head around it. I know I should slow down (work-wise mainly) but it seems really hard (self-employed - just accepted another job ). Will have to slow down next week though...

Good to know, I'm not the only one that probably gets "the look" from DH when he gets home and I still sit on front of the computer...
Treatment-wise - blood test on Thursday morning.
I am on two injections at the moment:
1. Buserelin - which is supposed to supress the body's production of hormones (part of the down-regulating process)
2. Puregon - the FSH (Follicle Stimulation Hormone)
The blood test on Thursday is to check my response to the FSH. Fingers crossed, there are some nice and healthy eggs on the way - and lots of them!
Next thing will be a scan to see how many eggs are there, probably early next week - that will be the next exciting bit!

Evolsen I was on buserelin and gonal-f and I didn't get any side affects at all except a couple of hot flushes, it's so different for everyone, but it is possible to have a pretty easy run so here's hoping that's what happens for you. I am also self employed so I was busy busy during the cycle and I'm sure that mentally that was my saving grace, so I reckon if you are feeling up to it, then keep busy. I just had a day and a half off during egg collection, but that was it. The two week wait after egg collection and embryo transfer is definately the hardest time, but once again, just try to keep busy and have lots of nice things outside of work planned to keep your mind off it.

Hi Lulu. Phew! I thought side-effects were a MUST!
Thanks so much for that. That makes me feel so much better....my psyche works the other way as well, you see - somebody says there were no side effects - I don't have any, either . Fingers crossed.
I've been keeping feeling the stress creeping up on me of "must slow down" when really, I just can't at this stage. And that kind of stress surely wouldn't help, either. So I'll take your advice on board and keep busy - but with lots of nice things to look forward to, too

Hi Evolsen It's really good to hear about your journey - I've just received my acceptance letter, and am waiting on an approximate cycle date. We were a no-brainer for publicly funded treatment, which is great But we've had no other fertility treatment whatsoever. Straight into ICSI. Is that what you're doing, or are you doing a conventional IVF cycle?
Ooo! And I see you're in after 6 months - where abouts are you based?
I really wish I lived in Tauranga (just for IVF though!) - they have NO waiting list apparently! How nice would that be?

Hi ginger,
Yay, for your acceptance letter!
I am based in Wellington and - err, I have to correct myself, it was probably more nince months on the waiting list - sorry about that.
But if you look at it that way - whatever the waiting period is, it will give you some time to get fit and healthy (not that this intention always becomes a reality, urm!)
As for the treatment, I have to honestly say, I don't know whether it's going to be ICSI or conventional IVF.
I always kind of assumed it will be ICSI - but that could be because the presentation of the procedure that we saw at the IVF group meeting was so fascinating that it stuck to my mind... Will check up on that...

We're anticipating about a year on the waiting list, but that's not too tragic for us as we're only and 30 respectively.
There are a few little things I'm doing - I've bought a mooncup, and am going to try reusable pads (I won't use tampons at night because of the increased TSS risk) and cut down on any chemicals around that area Maybe it'll help, maybe not, but you know ... you'll try just about anything! Plus we're going to see a Chinese herbalist in case that may help.
I'm otherwise pretty healthy, but it certainly doesn't hurt to keep yourself that way!!
Hopefully this cycle will be the end of things for you, and you'll have a positive result in a few weeks!

Yes, I know the feeling - you do try just about anything. Every coffee or glass of wine you drink you wonder whether you shouldn't. But it all has it's limitations - we do want to live as well...
Cutting down on chemicals is good in any case - if not just for conceiving but also for general health and well-being. So we can't loose there.
I have tried Chinese herbs and accupuncture as well - didn't work for me, BUT it does work for a lot of women (and men!) and I think it's definitely a path worth exploring...
Good luck for your ventures to come!

I must admit that I think the Chinese herb thing is pretty much bollocks, but in saying that, my Dad has diabetes, and with about a year, he's been able to halve his medication, and then halve that quantity again by taking the herbs. Who knows?

Its so good to read this post!
we are going back next week to FA in Auckland. We had our first app about 6 weeks ago and were told IVF was the logical next step for us (no other treatment but after the diagnostic tests found out little - no chance of natural conception due to DHs swimmers being slow & two headed & not very many of them!). We will apparently go on the waiting list at the next appointment and its 9 months from there so we are going to pay for a private cycle first. I have been dying to find some info on what a real cycle is actually like so this is really interesting and helpful - i've been freaking myself out about the needles so its good to know they aren't that bad!! Thanks so much

Well - had my scan yesterday and it turns out that I have 3, potentially 5 eggs to collect next week.
Hm, I was hoping for at least six, but hey - gotta be happy with what we've got.
The follicle size ranged from 15mm (lead follicle), 11mm (two follicles) to 10mm (two follicle).
Yet another blood test and instructions to keep injecting Buserelin and Purgeon (300 IU) until tonight. Another scan and blood test tomorrow...
Currently, they estimate to trigger me on Tuesday and have the eggs collected on Thursday - all depending on the size of the follicles.
I'm a bit worried that the two small follicles may not be big enough by then. But I just read a research paper on the internet that stated that the life-birth-rate for women between 35 and 42 is substantially higher (45.5% vs 17.5%) if the follicle is 18mm or smaller.
...Confusing, shouldn't read so much on the net...

Hi All,
Had my second scan this morning - three follicles only! .
If I wasn't publicly funded I would have probably cancelled this cycle and tried again next month. But because I was given the maximum dose of Purgeon (my doctor told me today) I wouldn't get more funding for another cycle since my chances wouldn't theoretically be better than this time.
Oh well, as said before we will have to go with what we've got. Now, all I can hope for is that they will be able to retrieve all three eggs and THEN will be able to fertilise all three of them...
Hope is diminishing fast though....

Hi All. First of all - thank you so much for all your best wishes and crossing of fingers, toes etc.!!!
What a week/weekend it's been - full of ups and downs...
After almost giving up hope I wasn't looking forward to Friday - egg collection - at all. This procedure was my biggest horror of all, for obvious reasons: we all can think of nicer things to do than sit on this horrible chair exposing our most private bits to the world... Plus, catheters, tubes, big needles etc - not my thing...
For all those that don't want to read the whole blurb about the procedure - I got FOUR eggs in the end and three of which got fertilised and developed properly waiting for implantation this morning!
Anybody who's interested in the details - here it comes:
What an amazing experience it has been so far!
When we first got to the clinic, the nurse prepared me by putting a canula into my arm for the sedation lateron. Not nice, but ok - once you get over the mind thing that you have some sort of straw-like needle in your arm... (which I'm not usually good at)
Then the embryologist talked to us - this was a bit of a shocker - he came in and said "well, so we're here today to collect ONE egg." I was a bit put down by that thinking "Hey, yesterday it was possibly three..." Anyway, he answered all my questions and he did then say that of course they would go for as many eggs as possible. He also told me that he will probably use the ICSI method for fertilisation (confirmed by the doctor who joined us at that moment). I think my hormon levels weren't that great so they decided this was the best thing to do - suited me well. He also told me he would ring me on Saturday and Sunday to let me know the progress and day/time for implantation.
Next thing I'm in the theatre. Not as glary and horrible as I imagined it. THE chair was nice and low and in the upright position when I first got on. Somehow that made a difference...
I knew they use a slight sedative to calm you down. However, I had never been drugged with a sedative before and hence I was very sceptical that it would actually work on ME. But, gee - I didn't feel drugged at all, thought I was fully there. Just a little dizzy in my head, but as I was lieing down now it didn't matter. And the procedure started.
I must say at this point the staff at FA in Wellington is just amazing. So supportive and warm-hearted at all times! And this particular morning was no different. The doctor and nurse were in excellent spirit lifting mine with that. Suddenly - and it was probably due to the sedative as well - I didn't feel scared, worried or anything anymore. It was incredible.
They used the same type of probe that is used for doing scans - which I personally don't find as uncomfortable as a thin tube - attached to that a long needle (husband's report) and at the other end a tube with a little container at the end with a pink fluid.
So as far as I know they put the needle through the uterus wall into the ovary and then into a follicle. Then they flush the follicle with the pink fluid and then draw the fluid into the little container. This container is then taken by the nurse to the room next door where the embryologist checks if they managed to extract an egg. If not the process gets repeated. All I remember is the voice from the other room "Yep, got one!", "Yes, got another one", "No, didn't get one, try again." - highly entertaining (I thought at the time).
So in the end we managed to get four eggs!! Which was one more than I thought we'd get and THREE more than the embryologist was hoping for in the morning.
I was so relieved and happy!
The rest of the day was nice and cruisy - breakfast at a café on the beach (you can't eat or drink for six hours before the procedure) and taking it really easy.
On Saturday the embryologist rang us at 8.30am to tell us that he managed to fertilise three of my four eggs. I was so happy - didn't expect to be so lucky again! And then on Sunday the call that all three eggs had developed properly and that implantation is scheduled for 11am on Monday - today! So with any luck, we have three embryos waiting there for us. We haven't decided whether we put one or two embryos back in - will talk to the doctor and embryologist about that this morning.
So there. Got this far - and am much happier than I thought I'd be. Ready for the last step! Will keep you all posted on the progress...

Hi guys.
Thanks so much again for your wishes!
Well, I had two embryos implanted this morning (eight cells) - I even got a photo of them looking beautiful of course, for the family album hopefully...
The third embryo only had five cells this morning so they are going to keep it in culture for another day and then decide tomorrow if it's suitable for freezing.
I have to say, though, that the implantation while being not painful at all - just like a smear really - was the most uncomfortable part of this whole adventure. Purely for the reason that you have to turn up with a full bladder, i.e. a litre of water that you have to drink 1.5 hours before the procedure. THAT was not nice, especially when the nurse started pushing down on my bladder with the ultrasound probe so that they could see everything. It took a lot of mental power to get through that (about 5 minutes) Here's them saying "Relax"!...
But - So far so very good! I'm really happy and the embryologist seemed to be happy with the outcome, too.
Now all we can do is wait!

Everyone says, this is the affectionately called two week wait, which can feel like a bit of an eternity. I can now see where that is coming from...

Yes the two week wait seems like the longest and most tedious of the entire process. But you've done the hard work, so just keep yourself occupied with fun stuff for the next two weeks and the 10th Aug will be here before you know it.

Thanks so much for all the details, its soo good for a newbie like me to read all of this and get prepared for my first try.
How come they put two back? I've been told they will only put 1 back?
Did you take any time of work throughout and did you feel like you needed to rest after the retrieval or the implantation?
Did you do anything like acupuncture as well throughout too ...
Sorry for all the questions!!!
Hope your two weeks are flying by!!

Hi kiwigirl,
I'm glad that you find this info helpful. That was one of my reasons to come onto this forum - to make it easier for others, but of course also to have some sort of vent for all this exciting stuff happening!
They put two back in due to my age. I am 40 and I think as of 38 you can opt for having two put back in. The embryologist recommended that we did that since that would increase our chances and we are happy to take the risk of having twins - naivity can be bliss
I did try accupuncture as well and while it can be VERY effective in some women it did not help me. I stopped it about a year ago. But it CAN be very beneficial to have accupuncture and special herbs throughout the IFV process.
I don't know where you are based but there is a accupuncturist in Mana near Wellington called Katrina Gascoyne who specialises in Fertility and other "women's issues". She is brillant and has quite a reputation for making a lot of couples with fertility issues very happy . Her practice is called Clinic of Oriental Medicine - you should find the phone number in the phone book. If you're not based in Wellington they will be able to recommend someone in your region.
I took the day of egg collection off - you really can't do much due to the sedative - and then the following two days were a weekend and I tried to take it really easy. I felt quite spacey, but I think that was more due the whole process and coping with it mentally (I was quite nervous about the egg collection. Hence, I felt a huge sense of relieve). Physically I was fine.
BTW - the day of egg collection was the only day that I took Panadol. After that I was fine.
Hope this helps. Any questions - I'm more than happy to help

Kiwigirrl if you are in Auckland I know alot of Auckland IVF girls have used Vitalis for acupunture and swear by him. He has a website, I think it is vitalis.co.nz but if not you can google and you will find it I'm sure.
If you have private IVF, even though if you are under 40 they 'encourage' you to only put one embryo back in, it is your choice and you can put two back. With public and under 40 (or 38) they will only allow one embryo.

Hi guys. Well, I've just received the summary letter of my cycle #1 from FA Wellington and it turns out that the third embryo that was at 5 cells on day 3 didn't develop into a blastocyst and therefore was not frozen
That means THIS is my only shot... I think I'm going to wrap myself in cotton wool for the next week or so...

Hi noodle. Feeling absolutely no different - very unpregnant
Having said that, I have no period symptoms either, but with the current hormon level in my body I would say that any symptom or lack of therof can mean ANYTHING...
Getting a bit nervous about tomorrow. Should have the result in the afternoon and will let everyone know...
Thanks for crossing everything

Thanks so much everyone for all those wishes.
I am really happy that I could provide you with a positive result. It's been so great to share this experience with you so far and I was really hoping that I will be able to give some of you a big hope-boost for when you might go through this process.
As for me personally, I am so excited about the fact that I made it this far. Being pregnant - that was always something that happened to other people and not me!
But here I am, and I'm sure you can all imagine how much I now hope that this lucky streak will continue and I will actually keep these two little buggers.
A little update as to how I feel:
Mentally: TERRIBLY paranoid! I'm afraid to move!
I've got some spotting, which apparently is ok provided it doesn't get worse and, err, has the right colour. Hm - I'm still a bit worried. I think I feel better after this Tuesday's blood test - if they then tell me that everything is fine (hopefully!).
Physically: Well, let's put it this way, I can feel that there is something happening in my lower abdomen (ovary area). Up until yesterday I thought it was just the healing process - after all the poor ovaries got pierced. But now I'm not sure what I'm feeling. It doesn't hurt at all, just a little something...
Feeling quite bloated, but NO nausea so far (big fingers crossed).
I don't know whether it's the mind or actually the body, but I do seem to feel that I have to sit down more and have a little rest. But overall, I feel fine
More soon...

Thanks Bombshell and busymum!
Bombshell - They did put two embryos back in so there is a chance of twins, yes...
However, we won't know until the first scan - 12th week as far as I know - aaaaages away

A huge congratulations from me too I have been following this thread too and have found it really fascinating to hear what you have to go through.
I also had a little bit of spotting early on but am now 17 weeks and all is fine so take a little reassurance that it is common. And I remember the wait for that first 12 week scan took FOREVER! Maybe you could get an early one to check for twins?
