So This is baby number 4, first 2 were good, no problems.. Last pregnancy (3rd baby) I found out I was positive for strep b, so midwife at the time said no big deal just means you'll have to have antibiotics when u go into labour or your waters break, at 34 weeks my waters broke so I rung midwife and she said she would come check when she had finished stuff.. Didn't sound too concerned, came around 7hrs latter and said yip it's your waters you have to go to hospital which was an hr away. Finally got there, got hooked up to the monitors and everything and they noticed baby had a poor heart rate so said she prob had an infection from the strep b so they had to do an emergency c section! Now I'm pregnant with next baby, new midwife, have talked to her about all the history etc and she seems quite onto it about the need for antibiotics as soon as labour starts how ever because I had a c sec and there's the chance of the scar rupturing she said I have to be monitored the whole time and she wants to put a foetal scalp electrode on baby to monitor it's heart rate - which I've never heard of before, her theory is that because I have a round belly the normal monitor will keep slipping off.. Can it not be held there? And she says il be more mobile which I don't see happening since il still have one monitor on for the contractions and a wire coming out of my.. Ya kno! Also with the strep b everything ive come across says not to do vaginal examinations unless you have to because you can push the disease closer to baby.. And with inserting a wire under baby's skin - wouldn't that be worse? I understand there's complications and I still want this to be a natural birth just stuck as to what to let them do?? I can't find anything in New Zealand about the foetal scalp electrode and everything I do find says to use it as a last resort if you can't get a good heart rate not just because you want to try it which is what it sounds like my midwife is trying to do so any advice would be very helpful, Thanks :)

Have you voiced these concerns to your midwife? A problem with holding the monitor on the belly is that it's very hard for the holder to keep still and the movement can interfear with how well the monitor picks up the heart rate.I'd have a chat to her and ask her these very questions.

I Had a foetal scalp electrode on DS throughout labour... he had a tiny wee scratch on his head when he came out but no issues. Was a bit weird having it all connected that way... Labour was induced, two weeks late, general nightmare but the electrode was the least of it.
