Hi everyone,

I've just found out I'm pregnant with my first child. I'm looking for any recommendations for great midwives in the area (as well as not so good ones to avoid .

I'd also love to hear how any users of the new Thames Birthing Centre found it. Would you recommend it?

Appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks!!

Hi up the duff, congratulations! Ruth Kowalewicz is fantastic, 0274420015. She lives over at Opoutere way but travels across, she is an idependant midwife but uses the Thames birthing unit. Another great thing is she is one of only a very few midwives who have access to Waikato Hospital so if you end up birthing there for any reason she can be there with you. She fills up fast though as she is popular.

Thames birthing unit, haven't used it myself but all those I know who have love it-modern and quiet. Room for a partner to stay no questions asked. Haven't heard any complaints.

All the best

Congrats!  I've heard so many things about each of the midwives and it really depends on the fit with you and what you want from your birth!

I'd recommend calling a few and asking them some questions to see if their values fit with yours before deciding.  There's this good link to see what to look for in a midwife  http://www.midwife.org.nz/women-in-new-zealand/what-to-look-for-in-a-midwife" rel="nofollow - http://www.midwife.org.nz/women-in-new-zealand/what-to-look-for-in-a-midwife   and I'd also suggest asking about where you can give birth and whether they'll attend you - like Pitter Patter said, very few midwives from Thames have access to Waikato Hospital and it's not fun being left with people you don't know.  And ask about their backup too!

The Thames Birthing Unit is fantastic too, they really look after you there and it's awesome that your partner can stay, it can be hard for Dad to go home afterwards.

Belated thanks for your replies! Ruth no longer takes on new clients on this side of the hill but I have found someone else based at the birthing clinic and its working well.
