Just had the results of my 2nd glucose test and it looks like I've got GD... just wondering if anyone who's had this managed to have a homebirth? I would personally talk to your midwife about it and see what she is comfortable with. The recommendations would be an induction before term due to the risk of stillbirth increasing so if that's the road you go down obviously you couldn't be at home. The other risk is baby not coping with labour so the recommendation is continuous monitoring with a CTG which again you couldn't have at home. Another complication with GD is sometimes the respirator centre in the brain isn't fully developed and babies that have otherwise seemed fine need some resus at birth unexpectedly. At a home birth the midwives would be able to stabilise baby until it can get to the hospital but if it needs extensive resus there would be a delay in some of the procedures. The neonatal doctors would recommend some testing of baby's blood sugars as GD babies have a high risk of hypoglycaemia which can actually impact breathing and babies can get unwell fast. A midwife is only funded to stay for two hours following the birth so you would have to consider how you would monitor this (or if you would even chose to). Anyway you have the right to decline any treatment and well controlled GD on diet is a whole different ball game to uncontrolled GD on medication. I would honestly recommend talking to your midwife as if she isn't comfortable with it you will need to decide if you want to search around for one who would support it (if you can even find one) an then if you can are you willing to take the responsibility for the possible risks to baby. I'm not judging, or saying what you should do, just that those are some of the reasons behind the recommendations. I'm sure you can find a hundred stories of GD births that went well and could have technically been at home. So really it's about how you and your support people feel :) |

| And in terms of what 'has' to be done, the answer is nothing. You have the right to decline,accept or ask for a second opinion about anything. Doctors and midwives can only give their recommendations but at the end of the day the choice is always yours (even though they may make you feel like you don't have a choice). Start throwing the word 'consent' around if you feel pressured, we have laws around consent and it is illegal for them to not gain your consent without coercion. |

I would definitely talk to the mw about it. There will be lots of factors to whether you can do it or not. One huge factor for me is the length of time it may take you to get to a hospital if something goes wrong or the length of time that it will take a ambulance to get to you. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">
