Hi all. I am 12 weeks pregnant with #2 and a bit (actually paranoid to the point of tears) worried.
With #1 we had a very stressful pregnancy with lots of bleeds due to placenta previa until 28 weeks, a fluid leak at 27 weeks and then he arrived 5 weeks early for reasons nobody ever explained to me. Although I managed this at the time, I have nothing but scary and negative memories of his first couple of weeks and all the associated problems of being premature. This pregnancy so far has been relatively uncomplicated and not even a spot of bleeding which is a great relief. But I stay awake at night scared that this baby will be premmie too. Is there a link? The only other lady I know that had a premmie (4 weeks early) also had her second baby 4 weeks early so I am worried. |

I have a friend who gave birth to her first baby 5 weeks early, second baby was few days overdue.
Had a work colleague who had a c-section at about 35 weeks with her first due to severe pre-eclampsia, with her second she went to 38 weeks and they opted to do a c-section due to risk of pre-eclampsia, but she didn't have pre-eclampsia or any issues with her pregnancy. It often depends whether the cause was specific to that pregnancy, or something likely to recur in subsequent pregnancies. If your first bub was born early as a result of the placenta praevia, then it's unlikely your next bub will be early unless you're unlucky enough to have placenta praevia again.
Are you seeing an OB? Maybe talk thru your concerns with him/her, they'll be able to reassure you based on your own specific history, and if they think there's a higher possibility that you might deliver early again, they can help you prepare for that both mentally and physically. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

It's like Maya said. It depends entirely on why you had a premmie birth the first time.
So some people have multiple premmie births because they have the same problem each time or because they are prone to it. And some people have a one off cause that leads to a premmie birth for one of their pregnancies. So with something like placenta praevia there is a slightly higher chance than other people of you getting it again, but on the flip side that means there is a huge chance it won't be an issue. If that was the cause of the premmie birth the first time you might be fine. My first was 7 weeks early for no known reason. I was fit and healthy and my daughter was fine apart from being early. 2 weeks in NICU being tube fed waiting for the sucking reflex to kick in.
They said as there was no reason for it I'd most likely go to term for subsequent pregnancies. Unfortunately I got a nasty gastro thing at 30 weeks the next time around and the non stop vomiting triggered early labour. They did manage to stop it but I wasn't surprised when I did go early again and my son was born at 34 weeks. Another 2 weeks in NICU. But the Obsetrician said that I still only have a 30% chance of another next time around even after already having 2. She also thinks the gastro thing made my uterus irritable so the 2nd early one may have been unrelated. Not sure if that helps but if there was no reason for your early one I got the impression that it doesn't mean you'll have another prem. ------------- Adoring Mum to Talisin 8/9/11 and Kiara 18/01/10 |

Placenta previa actually righted itself enough for a vaginal birth at around 28 weeks, so that's not the reason he arrived early, though they suspected some sort of infection. At my next midwife appointment I will ask her opinion
