I am in the process of investigating midwives and needed to check something before I start ringing around.
Many MW have what areas they service....does that mean I have to find a MW that is in the area I live in or can I find someone close to where I work?
I work 1/2 an hour away and TBH I would like to birth at Auckland rather than Middlemore anyway, which is close to work rather than home.
Can MW only take on new mums from their area or is it a personal choice of the MW
Thanks in advance

I would say closer to home. The MW has to come for home visits after bubs is born so I expect it would be easier if they didn't have to travel as far?

I would choose closer to home - just try and find one that is able to birth at Auckland if that is your preference.

Close to where you live as your MW will be doing home visits once baby arrives.
I found when looking for MWs in West Auckland some wouldn't take me on as it was too far for them to go.

When I had DS, my midwife was about 20mins from home. She works out of Auckland hospital. While she didn't do visits after the birth she organized a really lovely midwife to visit. I don't think it made much difference to my/care.

I chose my LMC close to work as it was way more convenient for antenatal appointments...also like you I wanted to birth at Auckland rather than North Shore. It has (so far) worked out really well, as I could duck out during work hours for appointments quite easily.
