My labour with DS was 4 hours, from hind waters breaking (first sign of labour) to the 3rd stage, the placenta. The pushing stage was only 6 minutes and 3 pushes!!
About a week before labour started I had (sorry TMI) a loose bowel motion and started loosing my mucous plug. I had the odd bit of period like pain in my back, but nothing to write home about. Anyways, how did your 2nd and/or subsequent labours start? Did they have similarities? Was baby 1st and 2nd time in the same position or different? ETA - DS was born at 38 weeks. ------------- Our Angel July 08  Gone but not forgotten

Westies girl - i had a short labour with my first, similar to you, 3.5hrs from first niggle to finish. So i thought my second birth would be quick to and it was. Less than an hour from first sign to finish, i was 4cm when checked by mw and was holding bubs 8 mins later, with no real effort of pushing. So all i will say is be prepared for another quick birth, and ring your mw as soon as possible.
Both babies presented the in the same position, but different gestations, so 41wks versus 39wks. Labours started differently, with first i lost plug and water broke 30 mins before contractions started. With second i started with contractions and waters broke after about 30mins. -------------

I felt fantastic after number 2. Recovery seemed much quicker, the "pushing stage" was so much easier (maybe due to birthing standing up). It was still a shock that it happened so fast but at least i was a little prepared. Also transition was only about 2 contraction so much easier to handle  Also so much more relaxing as you know what to do with a newborn, so i got to enjoy it more as i wasnt worried about what i was supposed to do, IYKWIM.-------------

First baby contractions started out of the blue 8 days overdue,no pre warning signs apart from a bit of back ache,laboured with her for 24 hours born naturally with no complications.(pushed for 45 minutes)
Baby number two,was having bearable contractions on and off for a week,was 4cms dilated for 4 days but that was my only sign that he was somewhere near ready.Thursday night the MW told me she would be seeing me later,friday morning contractions had died down,then at 12pm,after visiting with her,they started up properly,active labour was about 6 hours once it got really going ( I remained at 5cms for awhile,once I got to 7cms it was all on ) Again,natural birth very quick transition and only about a 6minute pushing time -------------

I LOVE hearing how much quicker everyone's labours seem to be 2nd time round! Although one hour is seriously impressive, and a wee bit scary!
I'm a bit worried about being out somewhere with DD when I go into labour though. First time round was 4.5 hours with 2 hours pushing. If the pushing will be less this time round, like everyone says it will (my midwife said it will be 15 minutes tops! I said I'd like that in writing!!!), then I could be looking at about 2 hours. And my contractions were full on right from the start last time so if I'm out somewhere I won't be able to drive myself home or to Birthcare  So I'm hoping this time round I might have some more warnings!

I am just waiting for someone to come into this thread and say they had a 6 hour labour with number one and a 24 hour labour with number two, lol.
Phoenix was 7 hours. Will be interesting to see what number two is. I remember the nurses at the hospital saying "I wouldn't expect baby to arrive today" (at 7.30am), haha. Showed you! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

4 births 1st I had alot of bh and show for about a week BH just got stronger and became real labour, was longish 13hrs but he was posterior. that was 38wks 7lb2oz
2nd I had BH and show a few days b4 i had been for an induction assesment and knew i was 3cm, at 2am at 11day overdue after only a few BH early that night I jumped out of bed labour had just started full blown went straight to hospital(5mins away) and he was born b4 3am. 41wks 4days 8lb8oz 3rd was 3wks of BH and no show at all, labour was a bit longer but alot of it seemed to be before i had started dilating, went to hospital at 2:30am was only 2cm went home an hr later went back and was 7cm but he had his head slightly wrong position hence the contractions that werent doing much. his labour was still only 3-5hrs total including the nonsnece. that was 40wks 2days 6lb14oz 4th i had no bulid up and no show, I woke up not in labour 1:45am to go toilet, 2:30am I was in labour heading to hospital and he was born 4:15am, there was no build up at all, was booked to be induced same day exactly 42wks. 9lb5oz ------------- Mummy to 4 boys Samuel - 18.6.05 Rory - 15.7.06 Mason - 13.06.08 Emmett - 24.01.10 Baby #5 - cooking |

First labour my waters broke at 6am and things progressed quickly. We had trauma during labour which dragged everything out and he arrived at 5 to midnight. Second labour I lost most of my waters at 36 wks and it was a painful, exhausting, miserable 4 wks of contractions before he finally arrived on his EDD. I had a midwife who seriously believed that pregnant women shouldn't have opinions and ignored all my calls about how something was wrong, etc  otherwise I would've been induced and it would have been alot easier. Needless to say I wouldn't go to her again! -------------

I worry how quick #2 will as with #1 I was induced so was on monitor with no contractors, 2 hours 21 minutes later I had DS.
I also had full on contractions right from the start. I think the hospital midwife thought I was exaggerating when I couldn't speak after a few minutes. I would hate to have to go through a 16hour + labour now, so hope this one is quick

My first was about 28 hours from waters breaking to baby born (and that was 4.5 weeks after my show and initial waters leaking!). I'm really quite like something quicker this time!

I know you can never tell how it will start, but Im more worried about being in labour and not knowing, if that makes sense. Contractions with DS were fast and painful right from the start so Im kinda relying on that, or waters breaking, as my sign of labour. ------------- Our Angel July 08 Gone but not forgotten

All my labours have started similarly. When my contractions started, they were obviously contractions IYKWIM? The intensity built slowly and they slowly got closer together. So in a way I was lucky that even though they were 'long-ish' (total labours from 1st contractions to baby: 24hrs, 12hrs, 7hrs) at least it was easy for me to tell when it all started. ------------- DS 8 DD 6 DS 4 DD 2 |

Mine were different. With DD labour started by hind waters breaking and a few light contractions, then nothing really happened till the next day, 16hrs after hind water breaking, the Dr broke the front water membrane which kicked off labour and she was born 3.5hrs later. She was head down and in an LOL position, and 14mins of pushing.
With DS my water fully broke at 1am, labour properly started at 3:30am and he was born at 5:04am so 4hrs from water breaking, 1.5hrs established labour. Oh but as for positions, according to my notes at my last appt he was head down and LOA but he came out bum-first and posterior lol, so COMPLETELY different position to DD! both mine started the same way- contractions started middle of the night, no show. Only difference was with #2 I had BH for a couple of weeks leading up to labour and 4cm dilated when labour started. With #1 went into labour at 39w5d and lasted 17 hrs, was in hospital for 10hrs and DD was posterier so laboured was prolonged, waters ended up getting broken manually and has an assisted delivery. #2 went into labour at 41w 1d , lasted 5 hrs, in hospital for 3 hrs, water broken naturally but only about 5 mins before DS was born, natural water birth. Recovery wise, recovery was so, so much easier second time around. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

I'll be interested in #2 birth for me too tyrbear as was induced with first as well. With #1 waters broke on a wed but nothing happened so on fri started on synto drip at 1030am and he was born 1.50pm, about 2.5 hours from 3cm to delivering placenta BUT seeing as I was induced I wonder if this time if I go on my own will it be faster or not??? Hmm we ll find out in a few months ------------- Ds1 - 20 months old Ds2 - 4 months old |

That would be me although number 2 had a flexed chin ( not tucked under) and was posteior which was the cause.
Dd was 12 hours total, 3 establised, 15 mins pushing. Ds was 22 hours total, 7 hours established, 15 mins pushing. But like I said it was his chin that caused it so once we managed to get him to drop it the rest ofthe labour went quickly. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Mine were about the same... Mild niggles the day before (following sweeps) to give me warning and then muddle of the night really starting. About 6 hrs of established labour for both.
DS my waters broke about 2.5hrs before he was born and was pushing for about 20 mins. Born at 41+3 DD the waters broke on first strong push and she was born on 3rd push so under 5mins. Born at 40+2 Goodness knows what this baby is going to do when she finally decides to arrive!! fingers crossed for fast but enough time to fill the pool lol |

Oh god tyrbear don't say thatnotEd rather not go too much faster but mw did say it was encouraging that my body responded so well to the synto necks it can take a while to have an effect on some women apparently. ------------- Ds1 - 20 months old Ds2 - 4 months old |

I'm might be the bearer of bad news hehe.
1st was 3hrs from waters been broken, 40w3d 1 push. 7lb 6 oz. Head circum 34cm 2nd was 3.5, posterior birth. 30mins pushing. 35w3d. 7lb head circum 36cm 3rd 3hrs. 1.5hours of pushing, his head was in the wrong position. 39w6d, 9lb5oz, head circus 37cm. If his head was in the right position my labour would have been easy, my contractions were 4mins apart and I was 10cm dilated. My MW reckons that if he had been in the right position I would have had a 1hr long labour. FX'd number four is in the right position, it's head isn't any bigger and I don't go past 9lb. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Didn't add my third baby to my original post,poor overlooked third child ;-)
I was 3cms dilated at 9:41pm,the contractions were irregular and never gained the intensity or pain that her brother's did,and she was out and on my chest at 11:41pm,so ah yeah...pretty quick. She was 2 weeks over due and not happy to be out,angriest looking newborn I've ever seen -------------

Dd waters broke at 11.30pm dd arrived at 2.14am after 14 mins of pushing presenting with a mini salute hand up to her face caused me a third degree tear.... 8 pounds 14 39+6
Ds waters broke at 2.10pm he arrived with one push at 2.51pm... Was explained like a cork being let out of a champagne bottle totally lived up to his name of jett -------------

DD1 - 14 hours from waters breaking, 1.5 hours pushing, LOA position, but cervical lip holding her up on the way out.
DD2 - 2 weeks of pre-labour in the evenings, 1cm dilated on the Thursday, born on Monday after 2.5 hours, of which I didn't think I was in labour for 1.5 of those! ROL position since 33 weeks, stubborn wee thing would NOT move! Perfectly fine for labour! |

Ok so for those that are interested in how I went.
Waters broke at 1.05am, contractions started about 1.20am-ish and she was born at 2.16am!!! 1 hour 11 minute labour!
Good thing we wont be going back for a 3rd cos I reckon it would just fall out  ------------- Our Angel July 08 Gone but not forgotten
