Anyone out there that has suffered with this? & if so did you have for all your pregnancies? & how many weeks were you when it hit?

I suffered servere HG with my first. I had it up until the day he was born, ended up in hospital 4 times, lost over 10kgs & was taking zofran (ondansetron) 3 times a day. I've just found out I'm pregnant & now I am sooooo scared of HG returning. It hit at 6 weeks with my first & I'm 5 weeks now & I feel like I am living in fear!!

What are the chances of having HG again?

With friends of mine yet highly likely you'll get it again.

What I do know is that as soon as you start feeling ill, get onto the drugs cause then the all the nausea receptors don't get turned on or something like that. My friend is about 32 weeks and still feeling sick. I feel so sorry for her.

Had it with my first kicked in at 5 weeks but only lasted till bout 18weeks after that I could have been pre forever...lost 13kg in first trimester and mw still thinks its amazing I didn't end up in hosp...I thank mizone and powerades plus drinking lots even though it mostly comes back up again.

I'm death scared of it happening again too which is why we are giving a bigger gap so #1 is a bit more indepndent.
I know a lady from play centre that did with number one and has barely been sick, just naseous this time. I was told its 50/50 chance as all pregs are different.

Good luck

I had HG pretty bad with my first - lost 10kg in first trimester, was hospitalised for dehydration twice and was on cyclizine until 34 weeks. I was told I was more likely to get it again with further pregnancies but by no means certain.
Am currently pregnant with no 2 and unfortunately have HG again. However, it doesn't seem quite as bad - I think that's because I knew straight away when it progressed from "normal" morning sickness (throwing up a few times a day, able to keep some food/drink down) to HG (throwing up every ten mins even if I haven't had anything to eat/drink), so I asked my GP for help and got on the drugs a lot quicker than last time. Also because I knew the chances were that I would get it again, I kind of feel like I am partly responsible - but in a positive way, ie I knew what I was signing up for when we decided to try for No 2, so because it was partially my "choice" it doesn't seem so horrid/unfair. Weird how our brains work!!

Good luck - you never know, you might be fine. If no, at least you know it's treatable and survivable - and of course, totally worth it in the end.

Yes- both times. Was on cylizine and zoftron in my 2nd pg, and they helped it be 'just' ms rather than an all day all night spew fest. TBH, it's a MAJOR reason I don't want a 3rd baby. It may only be 9 months but it's a looooooooong 9 months when you're that sick And yeah when you have other kids already it's a million times harder cos you can't even rest.
Good luck, I so hope you don't get it this time!

Had it with my first from about 4 weeks until 11 (pregnancy ended, long story) also lost 11+kgs in that time too, but not with my second. Just normal ms from 3 weeks until about 14.

well you guys have given me some hope! I woke up this morning feeling a little seedy which is how it started last time. 3 days of nausea & then bang, the toilet became my best friend every 5/10 minutes. I think that's what scares me the most is trying to cope now that I have a 1 year old (on thursday). Last time I was sick from week 6 until week 38 (when DS was born), I had to take 9 weeks off work in the beginning & even then I had to revert to part time hours as I just couldn't function until lunch time. This wasn't a planned pregnancy, I have been on the pill so it was quite a shock to be honest. I have a few ondansetron pills left from last time but I am going to head to the doc today to get another prescription.

Thanks everyone :)

My friend had this really bad with her first baby. With her second she ended up in hospital on a drip with the anti nausea meds in the drip and she said after that she was barely ill. She was convinced what helped was getting hydrated and on the drugs straight away with number 2.

Bad story following.....
Cousin had it pretty bad with her first. She's 6foot tall and 75kg normally. With J (boy) she lost 15kg and was on every Med possible and in and out hospital for drips.
3years later they plan a 2nd child. Conceive twins. Morning sickness started before she got the +HPT. it got worse from there. her placenta started detaching from 14weeks due to the force behind her vomiting causing one twin to pass away. Back in hospital every 3days from IV drips and hardcore anti nausea stuff. Threatedned labour at 22weeks from vomiting so cervix stitched. By this stage she is 50kg and her kidneys and liver are shutting down so she starts dialysis. 38weeks a healthy 7lb2 baby is born whose only problem is jaundice and lactose intolerance. Mum is then 41kg and ty old never to have a 3rd child. But by some miracle the second baby was out er kidney and liver functions sorted themselves out and the weight has started come back.

I have to agree... that was a completely unnecessary and frightening tale to tell people!

I am positive that the above mentioned horror story is incredibly rare and not something women should be worrying about when they are dealing HG!

Sometimes I think the old saying "think before you speak" should be used more when people sit down at a keyboard!

Absolutely agree mummyofprinces.

I would hate for a pregnant woman, who already has enough to worry about, be worried that her uterus is going to detach each time she vomited.

Have some tact!

I had this from 8 weeks till about 30 weeks with my first son. 18 months later with second had almost no MS. This time felt seedy at times but not spewing.

With my first i visited the doc at 8 weeks and was told I had a urinary infection. Started on antibiotics straight away. I believe this is what started it for me. Within 3 days I was spewing up every 30 minutes and had to leave my job. At 15 weeks I was able to work 6 hours one day a week. Any more was too much.

I eat alot of very small meals but every 2 hours to controll MS.

Coming from someone with NO blimmin kids, it's a bit rich, Mucky Tiger...you lack a tact gene, so I'm going to bypass mine for the time being....
Why in the hang do you even post in here?? You have no children, you aren't TTC by the looks of things and all your posts seem to do are offend and upset people with stupid tactless comments.
I've held my tongue too long, but this time I am saying something. Either keep your tactless thoughts to yourself or clear off.

And OP yes, chances are high of haivng it again. The sickenss may be worse second time round cos you can't slope off mid day for a nap!!

WTF???? Holy bejesus Mucky Tiger what is wrong with you??? Agree with PP about the TOTAL inappropriateness and also the fact that you aren't even TTC so what the hell are you doing in the pregnancy threads spreading horror stories that aren't even yours to tell?!!

G.O A.W.A.Y!!!

To the OP - I had terrible HG with #1 and was in and out of hospital and on meds. My pharmacist thought I must have had cancer because the drug cocktail I was on was normally for chemo patients I did find that being hydrated by IV made a big difference. Second time round though I had a touch of HG over a 6 week period but thankfully we got on top of it so I found the pregnancy alot easier!! Warm water with a splash of lemon juice, apple juice and soda water, and gaviscon are pretty great at keeping the stomach settled.

GL!!! And congrats

I didn't have it,(had running to the bathroom morning sickness for a few weeks, but not so bad that I lost weight or had to take anything for it) ...I don't blame you for being scared of getting it again, that sounds horrible
I sincerely hope this baby gives you a break and you have little or no MS this time!

I had it all through both pregnancies but had a much better experience second time round. First pregnancy my midwife didn't even let me know there were drugs I could take so I really suffered. Second time round I was referred to the hospital to manage it with medication and ondansetron was what got me through.

Second time round I knew I was pregnant before I'd done the HPT because of nausea so I get it pretty early.

Hang in there...you already have knowledge up your sleeve and I think that's a big factor second time round. You can get on top of things early - whereas first time round I think it hits you before you really know what's happening and you are completely reliant on other people giving you information.

One of my best friends had awful HG with her first pregnancy, couldn't get off the couch, on daily IV fluids etc.. She put off having #2 as she was so worried about getting it again. However she is currently 22 weeks with #2 and doing really well this time with "normal" MS. She was really well prepared, knowing what she might be in for, so got started on the drugs early and also tried really hard to keep her fluids up and to eat pretty much constantly. I know it's been a huge relief to her that this pregnancy has been so much easier. It can happen

Don't worry, it is easier second time around because you know it WILL END!!! Lol.

I got antenatal depression first time around with HG, but second time around I was more clued up and ready to fight for better drugs and longer hospital stays. It was still very difficult, and I won't be doing it again, but it was easier. I second what others have said - get on the drugs as soon as you can (if this is an option you are willing to do - i only say this because I know two women who refuse to take drugs in pregnancy even when very sick with HG, I think they are nuts lol but that's their choice! ). I was on Zofran 8mg 3x a day with my 2nd, and it was a godsend in that I was able to have a reasonably normal life. Warning though - it was VERY VERY expensive. It cost me about $800 all up; $270 for a couple of months supply. It's a fantastic drug but just wanted to give you a heads up :)
Good luck, and try and enjoy your pregnancy and all the wonderful things with it, even though I know it can be almost impossibly hard at times to be positive. HUGS!

MuppetsMumma - I too lived on Ondansetron first time round. My first prescription was $25 for 6 tablets & after that my doctor made a call to someone & had it recommended for me by a specialist & each prescription after that (6 tabs + repeat 6 tabs) was $3!! Only down fall was I had to go back to the doctors every 11 days to be checked over & get a new prescription. I wasn't complaining though paying $75 all up sure beat over $800.

Still feeling fine so far, have hit 6 weeks today & last time it hit during week 6 so watch this space...... I have some ondansetron left from last time so I'll use that at the first sign of nausea then I'll go to the docs to put a plan of action in place.

Does anyone know if you can have a picc line inserted in New Zealand??

I hate to disappoint you all but i'm fairly sure uterus (how the hell do you spell uterus plural? Are they uteri?) detatching is not actually a real thing. I mean i'm not a doctor or anything but i call bull crap on the entire story. Juuuuust saying.

Dally, i really hope you either don't get hit with it, or can stay on top if it this time around.

I think she must have meant placenta coz there was a concern over that with me the 1st time but its just not something you go into detail over when a. its not your experience and b. its so freaking scary. I think HG is worse with the first baby just coz its all so new.

Wheeesh thats expensive for Odansetron!! I went straight under a specialist so I didn't even know it cost anything! Its awesome stuff BUT its really not great for the baby - not terrible but not great. So if you can keep on top of things without resorting to that then its probably the best option.

Its like an IV line but its longer and inserted into a much bigger vein and sits way further up the vein so that drugs can be given for a longer period of time, with out it breaking or having to be removed. I'm guessing Dally (correct me if I'm wrong) would like one because she had to have so many fluid drips last time that a PICC miight be an idea to avoid having IV line inserted everytime, because theoretically, if she looks after it she could have it in for a couple of weeks at a time. Not sure if she will be able to get the docs to agree to it, but its worth a shot.

Its a class B drug which means it hasn't been proven safe for babies, and there haven't been adequate studies done. I was on HUGE doses with DS1 and he was born with some minor developmental issues that were linked to the Ondansetron too so thats a factor for me. And of course no drug is really ever very good for baby as they're developing however 'safe' it is IMO. Don't get me wrong I think its better to take the drug than not be able to function lol and I would take it again if I had hyperemesis but I would try a few other things first

Just thought I would add that cyclizine is considered safe as well and it's not expensive. I can't remember how much exactly but I'm sure it was less than $20 for three months' worth. (Although I should acknowledge that I am not reliable at the moment - I just found a whole lot of "frozen" veges I had put it in a drawer in the fridge...damn that baby brain)

Cyclizine is stronger than maxalon but I think not quite as strong as odansetron (so you may have to take it more often).

And I too call BS on muckytiger's story, at least to the extent that HG was solely to blame. My HG was pretty bad last time and I was never told there was any risk of anything like that happening. I got sore abs from all the vomiting, to be sure, but I seriously doubt you could do that sort of damage unless something else was going on.

Jake was 2yo exactly when we got our BFP for Ty and I didn't get as sick but a. they were onto it sooner and b. my hcg levels were slightly lower. Thats the problem for me and according to the specialist-y people its not something your body gets use to. I reckon making sure you're really hydrated before you go into pregnancy and also having a midwife who takes your history seriously and gets you in for IV hydration and gets you scripts for stuff early is important. You'll do well chick. Even if you aren't as sick it'll still be hard coz you have Char now and you can't always rest when you need to but you get through it

I was on 8mg 3x a day and was a bit worried about my baby but she turned out ok thankfully!

Posted By: Babe

I was on double your dose annnnd still vomiting as well as cyclizine and metaclopramide. I had a chemo level dose but there were other issues like I was so dehydrated (and stressed) that I was having seizures, I ripped my throat open from vomiting plus had acid burns that blistered up my throat, I burst blood vessels in my eyes and nose and there were concerns that my placenta could detach from the dehydration slash constant vomiting, specially when I got to the point I was vomiting blood (still in my first timester). I was throwing up every 15 minutes from 3am til 11pm at night. They were pretty desperate to settle my system down. DS1 was a twin and they think I was one of those mummies who had a massive massive influx of HCG and it sent my body into a spiral.
For anyone whos on their first baby and reading this lol seriously that level of hyperemesis is pretty rare from all accounts so don't panic!! And you can have twins and have low HCG levels so yeah its really not the norm
ETA and yep I went on to have another one and I got severe morning sickness/hyperemesis but it didn't last as long and it wasn't as bad.

I am hoping to get some support, I can't find anywhere that has a proper support group for women with HG.

With my number 1 I had hyperemesis through my first trimester but my midwife at the time was awful and although I lost 6 kg and was constantly vomiting she never offered me any drugs so I suffered through it. Luckily it turned off at 12 weeks like a tap, I just woke up one day and wasn’t sick anymore.

I am 14 ½ weeks pregnant with #2 and have had HG since 4 weeks. I was hospitalised twice so far (narrowly avoiding it a third time) around 6 weeks after a 9 day vomiting stint and needed rehydration via IV fluids and IV anti emetics. The OB in hospital prescribed me Cyclizine, Ondansetron and Metoclopramide to go home on which I can rotate through the day to theoretically stop me feeling like death warmed up each day. I was almost heartbroken when the 12 week mark came and went and I was still staring at the porcelain throne 5-10 times a day. Unfortunately now all three drugs tend to trigger vomiting (although maybe I’m just waiting too late, I wait until I’m feeling nauseous to take them, maybe that’s the mistake) so am feeling gross again.

My midwife has just told me to try ranitidine along with the metoclopramide but that isn’t making much difference yet. HG is just miserable, and taking a severe emotional toll on me. I am withdrawing from everyone, sad or angry all the time, sick of waking up multiple times in the night feeling nauseous, exhausted and losing weight.

I feel like a failure, and like there is something wrong with me because I really don’t feel any love for this baby. I almost wish I wasn’t pregnant, and I think that’s solely down to the fact that HG is KILLING ME!!! I hate hate hate it so much! I so want to wake up tomorrow and not be sick anymore. From a lot of what I’ve read, HG sufferers sometimes have it their whole pregnancies. The thought of that just makes me want to curl up in a corner and cry.

Sorry for the rant, I feel like I’m all alone in this although I know there are others out there that must be suffering the same as me.

Aww hun, I feel your pain - this is HG pregnancy #4 for me and it's been by far the most evil of the lot

In terms of support groups, I find the HelpHER forums (www.hyperemesis.org) are a great source of support, so many people who just 'get it' in one place.

Treatment-wise, there are other things you can discuss with your doc that might help give you some relief. In addition to the three meds you're already taking, other options include high dose VitB6, phenargan and stematil (which can be given as a suppository if you can't keep it down). The ranitidine has been a huge help for me too, it doesn't have any effect on the nausea, but it reduces the acid so makes vomiting less painful and minimizes the damage to your oesophagus from vomiting.

Are you taking the odansetron as wafers or tablets? I started on wafers as I couldn't keep the tablets down, but now the taste of them triggers nausea associations so I've switched to the tablets.

As for feeling detached from the pregnancy, honey, you are not alone and it doesn't make you a bad person! In the early days of this pregnancy, I desperately wanted someone to suggest termination just to give me an 'out' clause coz I was so desperate to be well again. By 30 weeks I was praying she'd be born early coz the thought of weeks in NICU was far more attractive than another ten weeks of HG. Even now when I'm less than 10 days away from induction, I don't think I'll really feel bonded with this baby until I can hold her in my arms. But I do know from having survived this horrible disease before that once she is here, it will all be worth it.

Hang in there, but definitely have a chat to your doc/midwife about other treatments, and maybe even request a referral to an OB who is knowledgeable about HG. And focus on the small milestones - thinking '26 weeks to go' is pretty overwhelming, but if you break it down into smaller chunks (next u/s, next midwife appt, 20 weeks, 24 weeks) etc. it can seem less daunting.

Maya thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful reply. I can't even express how much sympathy and empathy I have for you, your whole pregnancy...for 4 of them, how do you do it?

I almost feel like not telling you this, but I am on my second day with no vomiting. I was going on and on and on about the awful vomiting and nausea all the time to my midwife, who suggested that I wake myself up an hour early, take my ondansetron and metaclopramide, then lie in bed for an hour and wait for it to absorb. So far so good. It seems to be a case of if I let it start, it will be hard to stop the nausea - so I will continue doing this until it doesn't work for me anymore (and it's only been 2 days, this might not work forever).

Have also been offered the wafers next time I'm in hospital, but the cost and your experience puts me off.

Have you ever heard of a CD created by midwives that is supposedly supposed to help with nausea/vomiting? There is a lady in the Due Dec 2012 thread that has just recommended it - I honestly don't feel like a CD could possibly help me, but if it kicks back in I might give it a go.

Thanks so much for the hyperemesis.org link, reading the forum there makes me feel like I am very lucky!!! So awesome to read up that all these women are going through varying degrees of the same crud as me! I don't think I'll post, but just reading it has made me feel better, so thank you.

Looking at your ticker it looks like only a week left for you. You must be so relieved that it is nearly over. Kia kaha!

Yay for no vomiting, that's awesome news! Taking the meds before you get up is a good idea. I know I lie in bed dreading getting up coz the minute I'm upright I need to puke But only 4 more sleeps til I'm induced, yippee!

Glad you found the HG forums helpful, I'm Gremlinsmummy over there. I didn't post there either until I had a relapse and ended up back in hospital at 28 weeks, I guess then I felt like I needed the support and encouragement.

I hope you continue to feel better and that you're one of the 'lucky' ones who fares much better in second tri. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy
