I was just wondering if anyone had had an accidental homebirth.. like you were planning on giving birth at the hospital but didnt make it in time?
Did it make you want to birth at home next time? or go to the hospital earlier?

Hahaha my official plan is to stay at home for as long as I feel comfortable and confident, only want to go to hospital for a reason (which giving birth doesnt count )
But I know a girl who got to the hospital 20 mins before her son was born, so pretty close to being an accidental HB (I think?) so wondered if there were many on here that hadnt planned a HB but got one anyway

I got to the point where I wanted to go to Hospital and was wanting to push, I went to hospital and was told I couldn't push (as I wasn't properly dialated) once my cervix got itself sorted Catherine arrived a few hours later.
If you are planning a home birth then wouldn't going to hospital only be if there are complications?
Next time I want to birth at the Birthing Centre rather than hospital and would probably go earlier if I could.

A friend of minedid. It was her second baby and she'd had a week of false labour. By the time she realised it was time to push it was too late to go to hospital. They called an ambulance though and tbey arrived to supervise Dad catching the baby. They transferred to hospital afterwards as she had problems with the placenta. If she ever had another I think she would've planned a homebirth.

Great story!
I have heard that weeks of false labour makes for a very short/effective real labour! Thanks for sharing!

A friend of mine had a planned home birth - BUT the midwife didnt make it in time, bubs was born before she could get there - she said something about 7mins and it was all over, lucky for them it was #5 so her DH kinda knew what had to happen

Jacob was born quarter of an hour after we got to the birthing centre, so nearly was! I'm glad he wasn't, though, I wasn't in any way prepared and would have made a big mess somewhere based on the blood and gunk in the birthing centre!
ETA that RiverRidge is only 5 mins drive away from us, and DH drove like the clappers - glad we didn't have a 20min car trip!

I go in the almost but not quite, got to the hospital and had her 1/2 an hour later. If I'd not been so insistent on going she could've been born at home.
I'd like a homebirth for next time (if there is a next time) but we need our own home first!

My mum got to the hospital with a few minutes to spare before I arrived. She honestly had no idea she was in labour at all so that was a concern for me but never happened. She reproduced dinner around midnight and at about 4am my father noticed she wasn't herself (and having had 4 kids previously to another woman bundled her into the car) and I arrived at 4.30am almost in the hospital door way haha!
We want a homebirth next time but like Kali said about own home etc although I wonder if I could persuade MIL or my mum to let me do it at one of their homes haha! Doubt it!

Also we had a woman in our antenatal class who did, or she might have been in the class before ours but we were told about how she locked herself in the bathroom trying to sort out the pain and then called her husband in when she realised the head was out
ETA: We were told more so for our partners that some women do strange things in labour. I know that I went into my own lil bubble/world when in labour to deal with the pain.

my daughter's dad and stepmum have had 3 homebirths and all in rented properties
If I was to have anymore I don't mind the idea of a homebirth,I tend to have pretty uncomplicated births and I've had no pain relief for any of them, but its DH that id need to talk round
oh and my friend' cousin was walking down the steps when she was in labour with number 5,stopped halfway, few pushes and baby was out,so that was an accidental one ...but they had no more after that so I cant help with the second question

Hey Emmi, I know a couple of people that's happened to, but they were both recently so don't know if they're planning anymore kids or not.
As you know, I had a planned homebirth, but I reckon even if we were planning to go to the hospital I would have ended up having him at home anyway seeing as my mum arrived to look after Chelsea just after I'd started pushing. She wouldn't have arrived any earlier had we been planning on going to the hospital lol

Had no intention of birthing at home with my son, in saying that I couldn't. The only birthing unit is around 45-50 minutes away. Lets just say my son entered the world extremely fast, went from having a crap to sudden contractions that were 2 minutes apart and lasting 20 seconds each. By the time my midwife actually listened to us that I was in fact in labour and mum managed to bundle me into the car we made it 5 minutes into our 45-50minute trip. Mum made the decision to turn around and take me to the local clinic. He was delivered by my mum and a nurse in the local clinic/old folks home within 5 mins of arriving. Because I laboured so quickly I think if I ever have another baby that I will just opt for home birth (plus the car ride when in labour is terrible!!!!)

My friend dud her first was 16 days overdue and induced so she presumed she we would go overdue again.
At 36 weeks she had horid braxtonhicks so got in the bath, baby moved something wicked and all braxtonhicks stopped.
She stay in the batch enjoying being pain free fell asleep and was wokenby weird pressure between her legs and felt the head completely out.
Turns to the baby flipped and putpressure on something in her spine so blocked all pain from contractions.
Baby was born a healthy 9lb2 so she was very pleased to not make it to term

I had an accidental homebirth first time round. By the time the midwife believed I was in labour and turned up I was fully dilated. The funny thing was that I had mentally prepared myself for delivery at home or in the car so perhaps there was some intuition there - not sure. It didn't phase me at the time, or afterwards though I was a bit annoyed that the midwife hadn't listened to me insisting that I was ready to go to hospital.
Second time I opted for hospital but baby was born about 6 minutes after arriving there and labour all up was about an hour. I opted for hospital because although I thought the homebirth was great (super relaxed) I still liked the idea of being in the right place in the event of an emergency. And actually, because no one expected our second to be born so quickly the midwife pressed the emergency bell and the room was suddenly flooded with people just in case of haemmorrage etc etc.
If we have a third I'm not sure what I would do. I would possibly opt for home and calling an ambulance as well as the midwive as soon as I knew I was in labour.

i have a accidental homebirth for my first and a planned one for my second. with my first i had a textbook labour of 24 hours pre labour before things started getting regullar and then another 12 ours before i was in est.. labour then established was 7 1/2 hours - so not quick, but i wanted to stay at home as long as possible and i rung midwife at 9 am and she said it sounded like i had a while to go so to ring when i felt things amped up a bit. so we rung a few hours later and she arrived 1 hour after that and i was fully dilated and at that moment had the choice of a hospital ride to the local maternity unit or staying at home, i opted to stay at home my 7 pound 10 ounce daughter was born 2 hours later
second i planned a homebirth just as well only 1 1/2 hour labour and midwife arrived 10 minutes before baby

Well not quite the same, but when Mum had me, that morning her and Dad argued about if she was going to have a baby that day, they decided no so Dad went to work. But she knew I was going to come quick, (her longest labour with #1 was 4 hours, and I was baby #4) so had been popping into the maternity centre a few times for monitoring etc.... The day I was born was the day my grandfather walked in, slammed her suitcase down and said "this is the LAST day I am bringing her in here, she is NOT leaving until she has this baby!" ...... So he was getting a bit grumpy after a few false starts
Buut anyways, I was born on Mums 3rd contraction.... Luckily in the maternity centre. And Dad of course wasn't there (there was no way he would have made it in time) Which was quick lucky, cos if he had stayed home, mum would have still been at home, and I had the cord wrapped around my neck which even made the nurse panic! Which Dad wouldn't have coped with.. But yup. Nearly could have been a homebirth!

I am not planning a homebirth with this one but mum and I both have a history of fast labours. I was #4 and she had me in half an hour. This is my third so I am expecting about 2-3 hours tops. I have even dreamed about having it in the shower lol. I have a MW who can do homebirths if it is too fast and lives up the road.

That's good that your MW lives up the road and can do homebirths if need be! That's why we chose to have a homebirth for bubs #2 as I had a short labour with #1 (3.5hrs) and didn't fancy having to try and get someone to come look after DD while in labour and risk not getting to the hospital on time. So decided it would be easier to just stay at home. And my MW lived over the back fence as it turned out, my 2nd labour was only 1.5hrs and my mum arrived 14mins before he was born.
I love all these stories, some of them are so funny bet it wasn't too funny at the time for those involved though

Not me personally, but i was living and working at mt cook (the mountain not the welly suburb) while preggo and nearly every baby was born either in the village, on the side of the road or one lucky bub made it to the drs office. The doc is a 45 minute drive, hospital 2.5hrs. DS was the first baby in a few years to be born past due, nearly everyone goes early hence the accidental home births. There is a family of sherpa's from nepal, her eldest son was born halfway up a mountain, she was going for a run up the stairs to hurry him along apparently!

My mother had very very fast labours. Youngest was 15mins from woah to go. Luckily she had planned a homebirth that time but the midwife was eating her dinner and wouldn't come! Dad was on the phone to her and had to hang up midway through trying to convince her saying "The baby is coming NOW."
Legend has it that my mother had walked into the lounge and asked my uncle (her brother) to move off the couch because she was in labour. So he went out and made a milo and by the time that was done - my sister was born! Haha. Hilarious story when it is being told in person.

Em, a friend here had an accidental HB, she was all planned for the local Thames maternity unit, hoping for a few days to rest with new bubs before going back home to DH and 5yr old, but it all just happened too fast and woops, she was caught out, luckily she was around in the the neighbourhood at the time and made it home. And the MW's around here are used to HB's a lot more than in the city.
