Hi there i had my first bub via emergency Caesar in Australia but we are planning on moving back to nz and will be having number 2 baby there. im just wondering how it works regarding being allowed to request an elective caesarian in nz? is that generally ok or is it difficult to get? Do u still have a midwife? Does the midwife make the arrangements with the hospital?
It is a very different system over in oz so im totally unsure of how it would work in nz and would really appreciate some advice.
Thanks.

I think it depends on the hospital and dr, but generally I think most drs are happy for a previous c-section to have an elective.
For me it worked like this, I got a MW and she referred me to the OB clinic, which I didn't go to until 30 weeks and then again just before my due date. I chose to have a VBAC but I felt if I had asked for a C-section it would have been fine. I think you will be booked in for an elective at around 39 weeks.
Other people might have more but that's generally what happens.

do you have a GP here in NZ? ask your GP to referr you straight to OB clinic at the hospital thats what I did.

Some areas of NZ work differently like here in Timaru we have a 2 or 3way care system. Hopspital MW/OB & include GP if you want. You can choose a home birth independant MW, but dont think they are really pro-c/section well thats the vibe I got when I visited then high tailed it out of there.

I was told by OB/MW before I left hospital after 1st bub born by traumatic operative VB that it would be best to have elective if back next time, so thats what it was.

it's pretty easy from my experience with friends, most OBs don't push for a VBAC if you are not comfy doing it.

Should be easy enough to find a MW who's OK with doing an elective C/S though they do get paid less so don't be offended if you have to ask a few before you find one. yep you still have a MW, as she will take care of your antenatal care as well as postpartum

good luck, when do you come over? the other thing to remember is that MWs do book up so it might even pay to start looking now!

Hi CarrieMum, I'm just like u, em CS in Oz under OB. This time round elective CS and I'm with a MW. Had no probs at all so far. It sounds pretty routine if you have had an Em CS before, and MW shouldn't discriminate, but best to suss out what procedures they do i.e. home birth, hospital birth etc to gauge what their opinions are. Don't need any pressure if your mind is made up. GL

My second was elective c section - after 49 hours in labour for the first one ending in emergency section

I did actually want a natural birth second time - but baby was presenting the same as the first - only 3 pounds heavier so the OB wasnt keen on letting me try a natural birth - she only let me go for 2 days after my due date!

But yeah - was my call entirely - North shore hospital will give you one at the drop of a hat Id say - but just find a midwife who supports your choice

Your choice... mw will refer you to hospital at around 36 weeks (some earlier) and they ob will book a date for you....

Forgot to say if you are planning on living rurally, a long distance from the hospital then the hospital OB should just arrange the 1 visit to see him before you are admitted for a CS, unless of course there are complications. Thats how they do it up here as the nearest hospital is 2+hrs away.
