Hiya,
I'm a fulltime vet nurse. I am pregnant and am 32 weeks today. I have kept working throughout my pregnancy with risky things like cat litter, x-rays, anaesthetics and chemicals. At the moment I am getting more paranoid about the toxoplasmosis issue. I tested negative for exposure to this early in my pregnancy. Should I get another test done now to see if I"ve been exposed? I have read that exposure is more dangerous for baby in the 3rd trimester. I am very careful to use good hygiene at work, gloves, masks etc, handwashing religiously, but I am still scared about possible risks to my baby. It would be just great if there were other ppl out there who had worked as vet nurses while pregnant - I need to hear some happy stories please!! Marie ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I'm no vet nurse but I volunteer at our local SPCA, and only worked with the cats (cleaning out cages completely twice in a day). I expressed concern to the Manager - but seeing as we use full plastic gowns & gloves she said I'd be fine.
Unfortunately My MS stopped me going pretty early on cause I couldn't handle the smell and now bending over is too hard! But they said they have had staff that have worked there right through their pregnancy's and have had no issues. If you want to be on the safe side another test probably wouldnt hurt? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Thanks for your reply Crazycass! I think I am just being overly paranoid, but justifiably so if you look at what toxo can do to unborn babies.. .. I'm going to get retested ASAP.

Hey there I am a veterinary nurse and have a one year old DD and I worked throughout my pregnancy and I was fine. My doc told me alot of the time becuase we are around it so much we build up a natural immunity sometimes. As long as you are good with your hygiene and wear gloves etc you should be fine :) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

My SIL was a vet nurse, and worked right through her pregnancy - her little girls is healthy and well and nearly three now. -------------

Hi, I was a vet nurse and worked right through my pregnancy. I was concerned when I first became preg, because one of the people that I was working with was a bit cautious about it, but when I spoke to my boss he said that he'd had heaps of preg vet nurses under him with no probs, just make sure you use gloves & maintain hygiene. And I was fine - but then, I'm not the paranoid type. I figured if I hadn't caught it up to then, with not wearing gloves etc, then the chances of me catching it and doing harm to baby when I was taking precautions was next to nothing. And if I did, then what will be will be and it is out of my hands. My option was to give up my job, and I wasn't ready for that. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Whoops, not trying to say that you are paranoid (you wouldn't be 32 weeks and still a VN if you were), but just that its not in my nature to stress about something I don't have a great deal of control over...

Just want to say taht you've put my mind at rest - I was being a bit paranoid jessm!! But up to now in my pregnancy I've been feeling ok with working with cat faeces as using gloves, washing hands all the time etc. And in working at the vet clinic for 2 years prior to getting pregnant I had never been exposed to Toxo. So it's like you say, if you haven't been exposed to it in that time, what's the likelihood you would be exposed to it just because you are pregnant.
