Hi all :)

I'm a young expecting mother from Dunedin and I'm moving up to Wellington in December. My baby is due around Jan 10th 2012. We've been told by our midwife down here to try and find a Wellington midwife asap so we have one when we get there! I'm having so much trouble trying to figure out who to ring up though. I'm overwhelmed with information and I'm getting increasingly terrified that I'll make the wrong choice! I've looked through all the lists of recommended midwives but I've just become even more overwhelmed! I'm still processing the idea of becoming a mother and looking for a midwife in a city that I haven't even moved to yet is just terrifying! I need someone who covers the Hataitai area (as that's where we're looking to live, but we don't have a place yet so that could change) and who doesn't push natural or home births, as I'm not interested in either. Can anyone help me by recommending someone that they've dealt with?

Hi Imford,
I am a bit in the same boat. I have had real trouble finding one so I have just signed up with the hospital. They will only see you after 15 weeks and until then I have been seeing my regular doctor.
I have heard that the hospital is really good it is just that you will not get the same mid-wife each time. So I guess as long as you have some other support (?) that could be a goer.
I am currently due 25 Jan and indeed it seems most midwives are on holiday then or they don't bother to ring back.
Don't get down hearted. Keep in touch!

Have you tried the list http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=34012&PN=1&TPN=5 - here (scroll down for the list)?

I had Victoria Pantaleeva, who was fantastic, but I think she only covers Johnsonville and north. Wanni Tam from Capital City Midwives ( http://www.midwife.org.nz/index.cfm/1,156,598,0,html/Capital-City-Midwives - here ) started off my induction because my midwife was at another birth, and she was lovely too.

I hope you find someone! If not, the hospital midwives should do the trick.

Thanks for all the great information!

@Guest - I will have other support, so the hospital might be a go. I have my partner and some friends and family up there so I'll be drowning in support people! We're due quite close together - It might be nice to keep in touch with someone else who's going through this at the same time as me? I'm the first of any of my friends, as I'm only 21 so most people I know are a few years away from children yet, so I don't have anyone to experience things with! If you're interested, I could post up my email perhaps?

@MissShell - Yes, I've tried the list but not had much luck. I have heard good things about Victoria Pantaleeva but unfortunately I will probably be in the wrong area!

Thank you both for the well wishes!

Hey, Im having real issues as well, i was advised by one unhelpful person that jan, feb, march, Oct, nov and dec were the busy months........People dont really think that way before getting preg.

Goodluck with your search!

Hi,

I just got my letter for my first appointment at the hospital. I rang a month ago and they said they would send a letter but there was nothing so I rang on Thursday and received a letter with an appointment date today. The trick is be persistent and don't expect things will happen immediately. They are very booked up and my appointment is 3 weeks from now! I am sure once we are in the system things will run more smoothly though (I hope)!
Not sure how far along you are but may pay to book in antenatal classes too. I have booked in with the Wellington Parents Centre...now I DID hear back from them quickly!

Good luck and lets keep each other posted on how we are going!

Imford I would highly recommend Sue Whitley and the rest of her team at Harbour City Midwives.  They are based in Newtown and I found them pretty fabulous having had issues with the midwifery team for my first child.

I found them all (there are four of them and you get to know all of them fairly well) wonderfully supportive of my decisions and very happy to go with the choices that suited me at the time.  In the event of a third pregnancy I would make the choice to go with them again.

If you go to wellingtonmidwives.com you will find a list and phone numbers.

Good luck with your search and like someone else suggested, don't hesitate to go with the hospital team of midwives if you need to.  They are also good.

I've been trying to help friends find Wellington region midwives for Wellington and there do not seem to be any independent practitioners available for January. Two of the obstetricians have stopped doing private clients, and heaps of midwives take leave in January. The hospital midwifery service is definitetly your best bet - make contact ASAP to make sure you get the amount of visits that you are entitled to.

Good luck!
