Hi all,
we're going to move out toddler to a big bed soon. He has slept in a sleeping bag since 6 months and hates the idea of covers, so this will be our biggest challenge. I am buying him a really warm sleepsuit (with feet) but will need a blanket or duvet as well - even if he does kick it off! Any thoughts on what's best to start them off with? We just moved DD she is still in her sleeping bag. I just tuck a sheet over her. Once she is used to that I'll put her in a summer weight bag with blankets. When summer comes we'll take away the bag completely. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

We moved DS in his sleeping bag, just a sheet over him at first then as it got colder a douvet too. The next summer we ended up getting rid of the sleeping bag as he was sleeping well under the sheet by then and really feels the heat.
DD has just turned 2, she went into a bed at 19months and is still in her bag and has a douvet over her too (she is finally sleeping kinda in one place - was a real wriggler and slept all over the cot!). Its been great cos my son NEVER got out of bed at night once til he was over 3 (went in at 19mths). By 2.5ish he got out in the morning (sat there calling to us before then) and only first got out in the night when he was over 3 and had rotovirus so was throwing up. Oww...thanks for this I have been wondering how to solve this issue. Good to know that they can be gradually coaxed towards getting under a duvet.

DS never stayed under his covers, and I just persevered! Once he moved into the bed (in the autumn) he liked the idea of a duvet, but still didn;t stay under it. I would just go and pull it up over him once he was asleep, so he didn't freeze in the night (even though he was in a sleeping bag). However over the last three months he has got used to covers, and will now pull them up over himself. My eldest gets really hot, so the duvet issue was a bit of a dilemma until my mum spotted cotton-filled duvets. They are a bit thinner, lighter, and less sweaty. So I combine that with extra blankets when it gets cold. In retrospect I'd have bought a double duvet, as the single slides off. I reckon the extra hang over of a double might avoid that, but I could be wrong

Thanks for the comments. I'm worried that keeping him in his sleeping bag is a bit of a hazard once he's in a bed - less able to control his movement in case he falls or whatever. It sounds like there are advantages though - if it means he's less likely to start walking in to our room! Any thoughts on the safety issue with a sleeping bag in bed? Anyone used a safety bar? thanks

I was worried about that too Ruthy, so when I moved DD, I kept her in the sleeping bag, but I put a mattress on the floor beside her bed. She falls out regularly, especially when she has an ear infection - it messes with her balance - so the mattress is still there 3 months down the track.
But she's never been hurt falling out. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have helped with her mobility. She comes shuffling out of her room in the bag no problems at all. We've just recently taken it off her cos it was getting too small, and she refuses to be tucked in, so we just let her fall asleep without blankets and then tuck her in once she's sound asleep. With DS I just put a rolled up towel under the fitted sheet for a while and he was fine (fell out the first night before i did that, and maybe one or two other nights in the first year).
DD has a bed with a safety rail as she was ALL OVER the cot so would have definitely fallen out. She sleeps a bit straighter now but her bed it quite high so will keep it on for a while. She fall out the feet end one night into the toy box! lol 
They fall out if they're in a bag or not unfortunately. Just depends more on how much they move around. If you're worried just use a safety rail. ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

We had DS1 in a fleecey sleep suit and with a duvet.
MIL gave me the best advice - to get a duvet (and covers etc)a size up from the bed. so for our king single we have a dbl duvet. gives you heaps more fabric to tuck down the wall side and under the mattress. Makes it easy to pull it back over before you go to bed. Our boy learned eventually. Summer is better! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

You can take the legs of the bed, or take the bed matress off the base so its closer to the ground,..we put DD's cot mattress on the floor next to her bed for ages when we moved her to a bed.
You can also stick a cushion or pillow between the mattress and bed base, so that baby would have to roll up hill to fall out! |
