Man the things you forget about your first pregnancies ay? I'm nearly 7 weeks pregnant, and oh my god I am so constipated sorry TMI!!
This happened to me early on in my last pregnancy, and I ended up with really nasty heamhhroids (sp?) and I so dont want to go through with that again.
Any tips? Sorry for the gross thread lol, but eeeeeeeek I need a pooooooooo!

It is the chemical relaxin that causes it. The bowel muscles stop contracting as much. Have listed some things that are supposed to help.
fruit
water
exercise
fibre (but only with extra water)

relax relax relax. I find reading a book and distracting myself works. The more you try to push the more your body wont let it come out, and you will get hemaroids again. Drink plenty of water, try the kiwi crush stuff from the supermarket freezer.

I've get this with pregnancy too. So not fun!
Get a huge variety of food with fibre in them: not just say kiwifruit, but everything you can: kiwifruit, spirilina drink, brown bread, bran, breakfast cereals with lots of bran and fibre, apples, prunes,...go hard on them and try to make sure you have something at each meal/snack that is high in fibre.
Drinking HEAPS of water helps things um soften up and exercising helps it get moving too. Try to relax as well when the time comes (don't strain!) and it can also help to 'try' after eating as eating stimulates the bowel
If it gets really bad, head to the doc before getting to the hemorrhoid stage, as eek that must hurt!
The things we do to have children eh?!

I seem to have the opposite problem!
I have one kiwicrush a day to make sure I don't get constipated but I find that by drinking a mug of milo every morning I'm pretty regular.

lactulose is available on prescription from Doc for $3 or its only $12 for a litre at the chemist you just have to ask for it's behind the counter usually. its much better than any other fibre bulking stuff, its a sugar syrup and very gentle.
i have found regular lactulose along side high fibre foods and lots of water the best, I find manderins & oranges higher in fibre and easier to eat than kiwifruit esp at this time of year. apples are also good on the run food, while driving. and Primo Xtremo a breakfast drink. Always have a cold water bottle in the car./fridge/kitchen bench etc drink hot waters as well if at work
dont eat too much white flour products bungs you up
hope my tips help
good luck its such a horible feeling!

yuck yuck yuck - I had this too I second lactulose to loosen you up again and then lots of kiwi/prunes etc..
And maybe TMI but if you are really stuck maybe a little lubricant kept in the toilet so that you can apply as needed?

Im the same - 22 weeks on and still having issues. But I just go when I feel the need and if nothing happens then I dont worry. I figured it will come out eventually, I mean, where else can it go
I try to drink lots of water and eat lots of ripe kiwi fruit.

Hey Troutpout- check out how much iron is in an vitamins you might be taking. I can't take anything with iron as it has the same effect. Also watch things like bread and potatoes.

I've felt like this too, but I am (self-diagnosed) lactose intolerant, so milk sorts me out when I'm feeling a bit.. Backed-up.

Totally agree with this. I was going to come in and say, dont sit there for ages and push push push as it will make it worse(I know from experience) so now I just get off the loo and try and do other things, eat some porridge drink heaps of water and relax! Or go for a brisk walk, do some exercise, as that helps get things moving.
I hope you're feeling better soon!

Not sure about remedies as such, but you know what always helps get my bowels going (not that they need any help - sorry TMI!!) : BELLYDANCING.
Great for all the abdominal muscles and really gets things moving in that area. Plus it's great for your back, and pretty much everything else! Just an idea, if you fancied a new hobby

Lol RJ, as I'm about as graceful as a pissed up elephant I doubt I'll get the hang of bellydancing any time soon. Though might be amusing to see me try (aka fall over).
On the bright side, after gorging myself on kiwifruit and all bran, I have finally done a poo!!! Quite possibly the most satisfying event of the month lol

lol - glad you had a good poo!!!
I almost relish the idea of 'drying up' a bit...I am far to frequent all the time.
As for bellydancing, even just getting some exercises off the net or something and doing them for yourself....could be fun! Good for getting in touch with those abs too. No pressure though! I just love it!

High fibre cereal! I have a sluggish digestive system so need to keep my fibre up or else I get into trouble!
Can't remember what my cereals called but it's similar to Light & Tasty but better. It's in a purple box with some green on it... and has some berries in it, maybe cranberries...
Also Up n Go is high in fibre ;)

fruit n veg is supposed to be good, right? A few months ago I started having homemade smoothies most days. I put loads of stuff in, much of which I would never otherwise eat, or only occasionally eg; celery, banana, spinach, pineapple, other fruits, raw red cabbage, spirulina powder smoothed out with some barkers syrup and some good fruit juice. Such a good way to get loadsa nutrients quickly. And, I'm sure it must be good for the bowels.

fruit smoothies are good yes but you have to watch the sugar content.

I just spoke to A midwife, she said to eat lots of fruit as a way to keep energy up, as well as almonds and dry savoury biscuits..so can't be too bad. It's natural sugar after all. As long as you're not cramming it in in other ways.

Rovic that sounds right, squatting is a much more natural, open position. There are arguments that western toilets cause a lot of health problems.

kiwicrush, kiwicrush, kiwicrush!
I was stopped up something chronic on the weekend. Drank almost a litre of kiwicrush and within a day the problem had resolved itself. Now I just have to remember to have a glass a day to make sure it doesnt happen again.

Troutpout, I am still laughing at your post, what a sad world we live eh! The sacrifices they will never know, lol.
I swear by 2 kiwifruit a day, great at mo cos they are in season. I also bought a bottle of prune juice as this saved me from any probs after a c-section last time,(haven't needed it yet). Had a glass a day in hospital, as you get really sensitive about any extra pushing after the birth. And frankly who needs it!
My other saver, although a pretty powerful natural laxtive is something I bought in a healthfood shop in oz, consisting of prunes, figs etc etc, sort of like a bar, but didn't need much and timed it right so was around my own bathroom at the time. Worked well. Oh and drink lots of water too. Simple but does help.
If you are having iron, make sure its in a natural form, ie Floradix, won't bung you up.
Good luck, and thanks for the laugh! PS prune juice tastes better than it sounds.

I got a nasty anal fissure (a cut inside your butt- TMI!) as a result of 3 hours pushing during my last birth and it has been the most painful thing I've ever had to deal with (Still suffering on-going isuues 18 months down the track)
I swear by a natural fruitpaste laxative called Nulax (sounds similar to what you suggested millemama) which is in a green box and sold at the chemist section of the Warehouse (and probably usual chemists). I take a tsp before bed when I need it and it really helps. Someone on here suggested it to me when my fissure was at it's worst, and honestly it was the best thing I ever tried. But yes, lot's of fibre, water, cut out white flour products, DON'T strain, rocking backwards and forwards, Squatting all help.
The joys of pregnancy..............!

p.s Try to remember to keep the fibre etc up right after the birth and drink loads of water if your BFeeding as it can be quite dehydrating.

There seems to be alot of different opinions out there. My MW said to be careful of fruit because even though it was natural it was still alot of sugar and not to over do it. She also said to avoid bananas as they could lead to constapation. She advised if I was having fruit to eat the whole fruit so I got the fibre and not have juice.
Alot of nutritionists give the same advise with fruit now. But I just use modiration myself and alot of variety.

All Bran cereal and kiwicrush. Was the only thing that kept me going both pregnancies. With those had no issues and still eat the All Bran to this day. The yummy honey and almond one.
