Hi, I am planning to give birth in Dunedin (currently living in Auckland) and I'm tossing up between the hospital and a home birth. I'd like to hear any stories of women who've given birth at Dunedin hospital to help make me make my decision.
Positive or negative, any details are of interest. Thanks ladies. |

I gave birth to my first at Queen Mary. Was pretty nice.
The only details I can think of right now are: If you have a straight forward birth you go into a four person room, if not you get a room to yourself (I was lucky enough to have a four person room to myself for the first night though  ).
They have baths there but the one I went in was horrible - it was not optimal for a pregnant woman. It was shaped like a normal bath and I couldn't kneel in the bath and lean against the side. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I had my baby at Queen Mary In January can't really report how the delivery rooms are apart from they looked nice as i gave birth in the hospital Bathroom  But the staff were really nice and helpful so no problem... But have to say No hospital Birth is going to come near to a home birth i so wanted one but my Hubby was to scared lol But it didn't matter in the end as i had to be induced ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Three of my friends have had their babies at Dunedin Hospital. From what they said to me the births were fine but the after care was average. One said being in the four bed ward was really stressful. Another said the ward nurses were useless and understaffed. Generally they all couldn't wait to get home.
I hope you have a better experience. |

| Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I really want a homebirth but I want to be prepared for transfer to the hospital just in case. Just covering all the options. |

I birthed in Dunedin and it was fine...BUT....the food is stingy so if you do end up there BRING HEAPS!

I had both my girls at QM. First time it was great, no problems, everyone helpful, plus I had my own room. I didnt mind the food but maybe that was because I didn't have to prepare it lol. Second I couldn't wait to leave, had an emerg. c-sect and was in a 4 bed room that I was meant to have to myself, but no, they were wheeling ppl in and out at all hrs of the night. Didn't help that I had my baby exactly when all the staff learnt of the death of a midwife so after care was very average.

Mango, sounds like my experience with my c-section and a four bed room. Thankfully I didnt have the death of a MW ( that wasnt the skier Adam Hall's mother was it?) But being a secondtime mum I got very little attention.

I had my baby in Dunedin hospital last year.
The obstratition (sorry don't know how to spell it!) was an ass, but apparently doesn't work there anymore. My aftercare was amazing. I had quite a tricky birth so I had a room to myself for a week. The staff I had were amazing, super nce and caring and helpful. I had one rude midwife come in after I had been seen by one and she had gone to sort something out, when she came back I told her about it and she got really annoyed about her and then i never saw the rude one again. I went home when I felt ready, no one pushed or pressured me, infact they kept telling me I could stay longer if I wanted. One night one of the lovely midwives took my baby for a couple of hours so I could have a sleep and brought her back to me when she wanted a feed...I know not everyone would be keen on this, but she just took her to the nurses station where they have a wee hammock for them and I was so exhausted after a really long labour and difficult birth aswell as major difficulties with feeding so it was greatly appreciated :) I also liked the food, except you got lots for lunch and hardly anything for dinner. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
