Just got my BFP! So excited! so now to find a midwife.

I've looked on the recommend your midwife thread and there is only 1 recommendation - Catherine Overfield. Does anyone have other recommendations for midwives in the Howick/Botany/Pakuranga area?

hello - this is my first pregnancy and i go to penelope harrison. i really like her and had lots of friends recommend her to me. she does take on a big case load so some people feel that she will push you out the door at the end of your appointment time, but this has never bothered me as i'm quite similar and have plenty of friends i can chat to about little bits and pieces to do with pregnancy. all the best.

Thanks Numberone. I'll give her a call. I'm also meeting Catherine Overfield - she runs clinics at my GP practice.

I had Debbie Ritz with my third, she was fantastic, when I got a blood clot a week after my baby was born she checked up on me all the time, was understanding when I struggled to breast feed her and is just the nicest lady.

With my second I had Catherine Overfield, she was ok,but you know what? I saw her at my daughter's school the other day, with my son and she wasn't interested at all,now im not saying that MWs have to think of you all the time, but I would hope they would at least be excited to see the baby they helped take care of in pregnancy etc,I know Debbie would be,thats part of the reason I like her so much.
Medically I cant fault Catherine though.

Interesting what you say about Penelope Harrison,Every single person I know thats had her,and there are a lot, were not happy with her.

Hi, I am now looking for a midwife in the Howick/Botany area and was just wondering who you ended up using Aspro? Are there anymore recommendations out there for this area? Its looking as if i may be moving up north halfway through the pregnancy anyway, but I think I will probably need to get a midwife to get me started down here in the meantime anyway. Any suggestions much appreciated :)

Try Botany Birth Unit midwives, Ive used Sheena Rice there and shes lovely, they only birth at the unit I think but that wouldnt bother you if you are moving north anyway :)

Otherwise just stick with your doctor for now, they can organise the forms for nuchal scan and 20 week scan, then you just need to organise a midwife up north

I think Debbie is moving to Australia, have heard good things about Catherine, I'm with Penny, but as you're moving sticking with your GP initially does sound easier.

If you are still looking for someone, I had Diane Klomp (middlemore case loading but based at botany) for the birth of my first, and the pregnancy & birth of my second. Can not recommend her highly enough, lovely lady, awesome midwife - I haemorraged with both births, and didn't even realise because she is so professional that she just dealt with it quickly and efficiently. Felt very safe and well looked after in her hands :-) She is also an ex-plunket nurse, so great for the after care!

I had Debbie for my second - I couldn't have asked for a better midwife! She is the most amazing lady. Unfortunately she is moving, so I couldn't have her this time around. I am with Margie Ireland from Botany Maternity Unit and she is lovely. I know alot of people who have had Penny and love her, but I don't think she takes first time mothers.

Good luck with your search!

Hi everyone, thanks for your responses. I have ended up just using a midwife who is close to my doctors (in epsom as I work in Remuera) and I also found one for up north, so I am covered wherever I end up giving birth. Thanks for all your suggestions, much appreciated :)

I had Penelope Harrison for my first baby. She was amazing! I knew she was very busy & so appointments were straight to the point.. my partner & I got on with her really well! She was very thorough.. she had no hesitation in sending me for scans etc. She was also incredible on the day! Whether you want an epidural or no pain relief, she backs you 100%. I felt so safe & felt like I was in the best hands! She's not there to give you lots of cuddles or the kind of midwife you text 50 times a day asking what you can eat or silly questions.. but she's still caring & really nice.. .. she's a PRO! & I'm hoping to have her for my 2nd whenever that'll be!I highly recommend her if you're wanting someone who births at Auckland Hospital & is very experienced.
