hi there, this is my first pregnancy - and i've been experiencing round ligament pains off and on over the last month. they can be REALLY painful and have even woken me in the night! they seem to come and go at random (as opposed to with movement as many sites have suggested) and last for two or three minutes and are really sharp.

using a wheat bag has been the best relief but this is hard to do when they occur when you least expect it! and taking panadol seems pointless because they don't last that long.

as this is my first pregnancy - i guess my question is, how does this sort of pain compare to contractions in labour? i'm a bit nervous that if i'm in agony over something little now - i am not going to handle labour that well!

I've not had this problem but had really bad cramp and asked my midwife pretty much the same thing ... how am I going to give birth if I can't handle this! She assured me that I will do just fine and that nothing compares to birth, it is a commpletely different pain, almost a good one (we will see lol)

You will do just fine

I agree a different kind of pain and a pain that your body works up to.

Plus you are not trying to work/sleep or anything else when giving birth you are focused on your prize/goal.

Worse case senario there are always drugs
