Hi
I am 7 weeks pregnant and want an elective c section. Does anyone know how to go about getting one? Who do I call and when? Any names and numbers would be excellent!!! Thanks |

If you've already had a c/s before then you automatically get the option to have a c/s with subsequent births. Also if you have a pre-existing condition that would make a vaginal birth dangerous then you can get a c/s done on the public system, your midwife will refer you to the OBs at the hospital and they will talk through your options and so forth.
I can't help with who to contact if you just want an elective one though, ringing some private OBs would probably be a start or asking your GP for a recommendation, I do know that you have to pay if there is no medical reason for it being done and i believe it's around $10k -------------

Yep it will cost you a bomb unless you have a medical reason. I wanted an elective from the moment I found out I was having twins. I thought because I was having multiples and I was high risk it would be easy to get one but I really had to fight for it. They wouldn't confirm one until I was 37 weeks pregnat and even then they only gave in because the presenting twin was breech.
I don't have any numbers but like Cuppatea said I'd ring around a few private OB's and see what they have to say and get a few quotes on price. -------------

I know that St Georges used to offer elective caesers, but their maternity ward was destroyed in the earthquake. I think they charged around $3500 for the surgery. It might be worth checking out their website to see if they have any further information ... ------------- http://lilypie.com">

St G's haven't offered elective C's in at least 2-3 years as they lost the contract.

I had Richard Dover from the Oxford Clinic, however I didn't see him privately. He also works in the public system.
But I did enquire about the cost of a c-section and it was about $2800 all up. He was a brilliant surgeon, every medical professional that saw my c-section scar exclaimed about how good it was done. Unfortunately after my next birth, an emergency c-section, the scar is no where near as good! |

I have found 2 midwifes that are happy to help with c section. Lynn at barrington midwifes and Marion at domino midwifes. If you talk to them about your options they explain it all. The oxford clinic has obstitricians that do electives so I think thats the way to go. Because you arent far along they will just tell you your options and you decide later. If you are worried about the babys head being too big they can check that in the 20 week scan and if its breech you can get the c section recommended. Hope this helps :) |
