Hello!

My sister-in-law had her children at Birthcare Parnell, and her experience was fantastic. But her midwife is no longer practicing.

I'm looking for a midwife who has an access agreement with Birthcare, for first time mothers.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Jen

Which area of Auckland are you in? I think some of the mws at my mw's clinic have access but they are in West Akl so no use to you if you are in another area.

Are their mws based at Birthcare that you could contact?

Hi you could try the birthcare midwives... Give them a call I used them and then you get a private room there for free if you birth at birthcare.

Thanks for the reply.

The Birthcare midwives work in teams of 3, so you don't know which midwife you will actually have for your birth. I got talking to a lady at a bbq on the weekend who birthed at birthcare, and unfortunately the 1 midwife she didn't really like was on call for her birth. I'm not sure I want to risk that. I would rather have a relationship with just one mw.

I think I'll give bc a call and see if they can tell me who has access agreements with them.

I'm in South Auckland, so anyone south or central would work for me.

Thanks!

Email MAMA maternity (google them - they have a website) and they will send you a list of midwives in your area as well as where they birth.

I am in south auckland too and they sent me a great list. I will say most of the midwives with access agreements tend to be located in Auckland city - however there are a lot in Onehunga/hillsborough area (but that might be because I am located close to there)

The ones on the list that I got that I liked were:
Paddy Hughes (8460416 or 0276518270), Onehunga.
Cath Doherty (0212244825), Onehunga.

Just a tip -- this is very true -- but even with an independent midwife, you might want to be prepared for the possibility that she won't be there for your birth, so it's wise to get to know your back up. My sister had an independent mw who she loved, but then due to another of her ladies going into labour at the same time, my sister ended up with the backup who she didn't know at all.

I went with the Birthcare team (and I actually got on really well with them all) as I figured seeing I was having appointments with all of them, at least no matter who was on call, I knew all of them and most importantly they all knew me and what I wanted, what my health issues / concerns were, etc., rather than having a stand-in i never met.

Not necessarily, I had to share.

So it pays to keep an open mind
