I'm trying to make a plan for weaning DD, but I'm hoping she'll self-wean! I'd like some ideas/experiences from those who have been there...
1. How old was your BF baby/toddler when you got pg? 2. Did they self-wean completely (i.e. no bottle either), or did you get them to self-wean onto a bottle? 3. At what stage in pg did they self wean? 4. If you actively weaned them, at what stage in pg did you do it and how long did it take? Did you wean onto a bottle, or just wean completely? 5. How long were they weaned before the next baby arrived, and did they want to BF again after baby was here? Anything else I should consider? i was about 2 months along with the next and still feeding the first. but i stopped abut then. gabriel was about 14 mths when he stopped but he was ready to anyway. Toby was 26 months when he stopped but i played a bit more of a part in him stopping. he was only having one or two a day a day if i remember correctly. i just told him no it hurt mummy and distracted him. DS1 was around 11-12 months when I got pg with DS2, by around 14 months he had self weaned down to 1-2 feeds a day mostly at night, so I just stopped feeding him when he woke at night, and when I put him to bed at night.
After a week max he had seemingly completly forgotten about BF and never asked for it after day 2 of weaning. He was weaned for most of the pregnancy and was never interested in feeding once DS2 arrived. I completly weaned him, and just gave him some 'milo' (milk and hot water) in one of those babies first sipper mug things a few times a day. I didnt want to go through trying to get rid off a bottle too, we already had the dummy to attempt to dispose of!! ------------- 4 boys!! 7 years, 5 years, 2 years and 8 weeks... |

Baby number 3 was concieved the week of DS's 1st Birthday.
Sebastian started to fuss when he was about 13 months old. He would latch on then pull himself off then bite. I was concerned about it at the time. A lactation consultant told me that my supply would have dropped by about 2/3rds and Sebastian was probably trying to get another letdown. I persevered feeding twice a day. While we were in Aussie over Xmas and NY he started refusing feeds. Refusing to 'assume the position' and just not being at all interested. I continued offering and him taking it till mid January. He then started totally refusing. Last weekend he was doing the baby sign for it so I offered it again. He gave it a go but thought the whole thing was rather funny and didn't seem to remember what to do. So I'm not expecting him to be that keen to try it again when baby is born. He has never had a bottle and I don't want to encourage him having one now. Good luck! ------------- |

Jude was around 8-9months when I got pregnant again. He probably wouldn't have weaned if I hadn't gently helped him along. He weaned straight onto cows milk over a couple of months - he completely weaned off me around 15months (and I was in the third trimester of pregnancy). I slowly started refusing BF and offering cows milk in a cup or bottle instead - he decided which and when he preferred to have it - it ended up being a morning and night bottle, he wasn't interested during the day. It helped immensely that DP started doing the nighttime routine with the bottle as he just didn't want to accept a bottle from me at bedtimes (and why would he when he could have breastmilk instead!). The last BF he dropped was the first morning feed. I stopped BF as pregnancy was making my nipples super sensitive and sore - otherwise I would have kept going. DD1 was 9 months when I became pregnant again, she slowly reduced her feeds herself, fully weaning at about 13-14 months. She didn't go onto a bottle, just dropped the feeds. She started to reduce feeds very early on - I'd say she dropped one almost immediately after I got pregnant (she was at 5-6 per day). To behonest I was relieved when she did as it hurt like a mofo while I was preggers, but I wasn't going to push her into weaning if she wasn't ready.
She wasn't interested in bf once bubba arrived (not in the sense of wanting to herself). If she was happy to keep going I would have done so straight through - saves on those sore nipples while they get used to feeding again once bubba is here! Also having a toddler to feed would have helped with engorgement too! -------------

| DD was a bit older when she weaned, 21 months, and I was 12 weeks pregnant. She was having 1-2/day until then, and then just stopped cold turkey, started telling me they were empty! She wanted it again a few days later, but I told her they were empty now, and despite a little cry (for both of us!) we just moved on. She never had a bottle, and was already drinking cows milk in a cup, so now she just has that with breakfast. |

17 months 2. Did they self-wean completely (i.e. no bottle either), or did you get them to self-wean onto a bottle? Has a drink of milk in a cup the morning and if asks for it at other times. Basically weaned herself yahy! Just wasn't interested. She never took a bottle and I actually think this made the transition eaiser, milks not a big part of her diet, she prefers to eat cheese and other dairy. 3. At what stage in pg did they self wean? Pretty much straight away. Started fussing during night feed and then stopped asking for morning one. She worked it out before i did. 4. If you actively weaned them, at what stage in pg did you do it and how long did it take? Did you wean onto a bottle, or just wean completely? 5. How long were they weaned before the next baby arrived, and did they want to BF again after baby was here? I guess it will be 9 months. I figure that it will be so far in the past that she won't be interested. |
