Ok, having a discussion with SIL about this. At EVERY appointment with EVERY MW and OB I have had to pee on a stick each time. But she never has to unless its near the end of the pregnancy or her BP is up.

I thought everyone pees on sticks. She thinks I must have something wrong to have to do it...I know that is not the case.

So I thought I'd just see what the masses do. I wonder if its a regional thing so tell me if you do or dont and what region are you in?

There goes that theory! SIL is in Waikato and claims EVERYONE she knows is the same as here...doesnt have to pee on sticks.

It just suprised me because its not a hard thing to do. Mine always seem to walk in, say hi, how's things, heres your stick, go pee and we'll talk soon. kind of thing.

We're in Invercargill and I had to pee on a stick every time (well technically I was winton)

And my due date thread had a big chat about this. There were a few of us soooo paranoid about peeing on out fingers etc etc I told my midwife and eventually she gave me a wee thing to pee in then I could dunk the stick. Cos when you can't see, it's a bit hard to know where to put the stick

I was in Taumarunui when preg with DS and I had to everytime. This time in Auckland I only started in the 3rd tri. I think it just depends on the MW or the policies.

I think in our Due in Thread there was a bit of discrepancy in who was and wasn't peeing too.

Well, there you go. It was definitely every time here - right from my first appointment, when my MW just handed the stick to me, and I had to ask what to do with it. I mean, I assumed you were meant to pee on it, since it was in a stick shape like a pregnancy test... but I didn't want to find out I was meant to put it in my mouth or something!

I saw a MW until 26 weeks and no peeing on sticks with her, I asked about it as everyone in my Due Date thread was doing it, she reckoned unless there was high BP or swelling there was no point.

Then I got GD so transfered to the hospital system, you do a mid stream urine test into a bottle there every visit and they check it with a machine.

Its like the fundal height measurement too, some MW's do it, others just "feel" around.

Im in Auckland BTW

Always peeing on a stick here in cantab. They are a bit little and fiddly for the late pregnancy arent they, the ones i get are only about 3 inches long

I'm in Hamilton and my previous MW was every visit but none so far with my new MW. Mind you, our last appointment was with all the lab results (urine, blood etc) so maybe not necessary this time. She is very thorough so I'd expect the pee stick next appointment and definitely ask about it if she didn't bring one out.

Cambridge with #1 and I had to do the dipstick every time.

Manukau with #2 and didnt start doing dipstick til halfway through pregnancy

This time I'm shared care between GP and hospital, and all my hospital mw appts I've done a dipstick test (18w, 24w and 28w) and I assume I've had to get one done at all my GP appts too as I've peed in a cup each time and the nurse comes through and tells GP urine test was clear??

I've always peed into one of those big square plastic (or tinfoil at hospital lol) containers, then just dipped the stick in, tip urine out and throw container away, never pee'd on them directly?

With DS I had to pee on the stick from around 14 weeks (2nd appt) and would arrive, go pee as the sticks were in the bathroom anyway, then sit in the waiting room and she would ask for the results as I was walking into my appt.

This time (different MW) same thing, started at 16 weeks, arrive, pee, wait, get asked result as I go in to see her.

I'm in Auckland

I get given pottles to pee in at home, every time I see midwife, ob or GP I have to produce pottle for them to dip. They check for anything that could catch GD or pre-eclampsia (blood, protein, sugars etc).

I'm in Chch, and I have to pee on a stick every time I see my MW, AND, produce a mid-stream urine sample every time I have a visit at the hospital.

It is a good thing too, because even though I had no symptoms and few risk factors, the POAS picked up gestational diabetes at 18 weeks!

I have never had to pee on a stick, only pee related thing i've done was pee into a pottle type thing then pour it into a test tube that was sent to the lab. My friend in Tauranga said she pees on a stick every time, was going to talk to my mw about it at the last appointment but it slipped my mind....some must have their own way of doing things? My BP has always been normal and my 2 hour GD test came back all fine so maybe she doesn't think its necissary as i'll also be seeing a OB on the 31st?

With both boys I always peed on a stick at every appointment. I have low bp and no other issues really, no GD or previous case of pre-eclampsia or such like.

I have had different midwives each time, and I have always done in. I do it before I even go in to see mine - go straight into the bathroom, pee on the stick, read results, hop on the scales. She doesnt even look at the stick, just lets me read it from the jar and let her know if there are any changes.

from 2nd trimester with both pg, different mw's.

personally I dont see why you wouldnt, its not invasive and yes its not conclusive and I had false +ives both pg but rather that than not know at all! JMO...

With my 2nd my mw did ask me if I had done one when I came in to see her, the sticks were kept in the bathroom so from then on when I got to the clinic I just went and POAS and if it was clear chucked it. Only took it in to her if it was +ive for something.

Wellington, peed on a stick about 4 times one in each trimester - so first time I met her @ 11 weeks, 2nd time at about 19 weeks (but also had gallstones confirmed a couple of days before) and then again at about 33 weeks and actually I did have to at 37 weeks too. Nothing was ever wrong and I hadn't complained about anything or suspected anything but she just did it as a precaution imo. You can't be too cautious if you ask me and it's better to be safe than sorry!

I haven't peed directly onto a stick but I've peed into a container at almost every appointment. I dont think it started until I got to about 20 weeks though. I cant quite remember lol.
I go through the hospital too.
I get asked to provide a sample and just let the MW do the hard work lol. I'd hate to try to pee directly onto a little stick though!! Hell, even the midstream pregnancy tests I would dip (if the instructions said I could)

First pregnancy I didn't pee on a stick at MW appt until I was starting 3rd trimester when I started to swell a bit, but it was clear and BP was normal. Sod's law 2 weeks later just before next MW appt I ended up in hospital with severe pre-eclampsia and an IUGR preterm bub.

Second pregnancy I went with different MW (actually a group of them) and had to pee on a stick every appointment from first visit as well as BP checks and regular growth scans (because of what happened last time), and sod's law everything was perfectly normal with a bouncy full-term bub!

Every appointment, both pregnancies, first thing i did when I showed up.

1st midwife had the sticks in the bathroom and I just used to check the colours against the container myself to make sure all was well.

2nd midwife gives me a stick and I bring it back to her and she says thats fine and I chuck it in the bin.

Just as a wee aside: DP usually comes with me to appointments, so when I'm peeing on the stick - it's actually a good opportunity for him to chat with the midwife and he gets quite comfortable talking to them. He usually ends up more comfortable around the midwives than me because he has had more time making small talk with them than me - when I get back it is mostly preg questions again! Lol. I think it's great as he is the go-to guy when I'm in labour and need him to be confident acting on my behalf/interacting with the midwife if I can't do it for myself at any point in time.

first baby I did it ever appointment, it was just part of the arrival routine. Let yourself in, go to the bathroom, pee in a cup and dipstick, and then go to waiting area. Compared it to bottle myself.

This time, no mention of it so far, I'm not fussed though. I assume I'll be told when I have to do it!

I did at every appointment for my first three pregs, don't now, just once when I was not feeling 100%. I asked my MW about it and she said they do it if there is any concerns but otherwise not - a change in policy. I am not too worried about it, I have great midwives and trust them. I am sure they would be happy for me to if I asked, it get awkward at this stage!

I'm in the Wairarapa and I did it every appointment with my first (my mw told me to bring a urine sample with me each time, so I had a vegemite jar I'd pee in before each appointment!). I didn't start seeing her until 12 weeks that time though.

I've only seen my mw once this pregnancy (at 4 weeks) and my next appointment is at 8 weeks, so I'm not sure if the peeing will start then or at the 12 week appointment?

I only started doing it after doing that GD test which I think was 20-something weeks.   My MW never did the fundal measurements, except once when I asked her to because I was getting upset that everyone kept telling me how huge I was. Turned out I was bang on for measurements. She didn't really feel for position till right near the end either, she just did the heartbeat and blood pressure and that was it.
