Subject: Arguement for induction

Right, i know i'm only 3 days overdue and everyone else manages to go 2 weeks without going crazy but you're obviously stronger then me because i'm about to go in there with a knife and get it out myself. (I'm not serious about that last bit)

I have an appointment with my midwife tomorrow morning and i want to make an arguement that i should be induced sooner then later. As in i would like to be told tomorrow i will be induced within a few days.

I have type 1 placenta previa (which basically doesnt impact on me and its the least dangerous) but i have had a bit of spotting this last week which makes me uncomfortable and nervous.

My last few pee sticks have been positive for protein and i'm super puffy - blood tests done for PET but no result - again, making me uncomfortable and nervous.

I have what i suspect is pubis symphysis which is bloody agonizing, i feel like i'm being ripped up the crotch when i sit/stand/roll over, i get around the house in some kind of hunched half crouch waddle and by the end of the night i'm almost in tears. I can't go out because even walking to the letterbox is agony, and getting in and out of a car is nearly impossible.

I feel like my mental health is taking a serious, serious plunge, i'm not sure i can take this much longer . I've been medicated for depression in the past, have informed my midwife from the start that i would be one to watch for PND, and i've done well to avoid it so far i think.

All up, does that sound like reasons that would convince her that i should be induced sooner? Or is it all part of the final weeks of pregnancy and she'll tell me to hang in there and wait it out? If its the later, what would i have to say (that is also true) to present a stronger case?

If you seriously dont think you can wait then I would try to get an induction. At least you are at full term rather than 37 weeks. The only downside to inductions is your increased risk of needing interventions which can lead to a c-sect. You never know bubs might turn up by tomorrow!

This isn't going to please you, but I'd say it's the normal frustrating, uncomfortable, scary last days of pregnancy! Fun huh?

Would it help if she agreed to a date for induction even if it's at 10 days over or so, then at least you'd have a definite end in sight?

I figured that was the case, T_Rex...at least you're honest and yes, i think i could accept it if she said "sure, but the hospital can't see you until next friday" or something..

Aethalia, maybe the threat will get him moving.

I think the worst part is that i'm not even excited anymore, all i can think is that i'm going to be in this much pain but sleep deprived, bleeding like a mad thing and dealing with all the other things that a newborn will bring and frankly, dreading it.

Hugs. I can't help a lot in some ways - I was on the other end of the spectrum, asking to be allowed to wait. But I can sympathise with how you feel! (I got to one week six days over). It does get just a tad (!) uncomfortable, doesn't it?

I reckon just be honest and outline the points you put earlier. Wanting an induction that much means it's probably the best thing for you.

And don't be too scared about having a new baby. It's totally true, you will be all of the above (sleep deprived, sore and bleeding) but I found it totally amazing how I not only coped, but enjoyed it (and while I had nothing on some ladies, I did have some pretty nasty tearing since he came in a bit of a hurry at the end). I know not everyone feels this way, but I honestly found it the hugest rush, I was living on left-over adrenalin for a while there

I'd agree with T Rex, sounds like the end of pregnancy blues. Going over your due date sucks but remember it's just an expected date and unless there is something hindering your bubs it will come in its own due course. Having been induced I would have loved to have things come naturally even though I was as big as a house by the end.

So....does everyone else go a bit mad too then? Because i do love to lie awake and night and go what if...

I know they're just estimates and waaay unreliable but i was told baby was 3.4kg at 37 weeks, if thats accurate hate to think how big he is by now, so what if he's never going to come out because he's huge and he's stuck...

You know, the thoughts that go around in your head

Right. So i might be a little end of prego-crazy and have just made an entire thread to show that off. Thats awkward

Don't be surprised if the answer is no.

I know that many hospitals are tighetening up the criteria for an induction and will not do it without an actual clinical reason. These do not generally include the reasons you have given. Many hospitals will not take a booking for an induction without meeting specific criteria prior to 10 days overdue.

The last few days of pregnancy are the worst, and it is very typical to be very worried about the baby. It is worth discussing these fears and concerns with your midwife to help you feel a bit better about things.

Good luck - I really hope that it is all over for you soon.

Hahaha... your post totally reminded me of labour. I was pushing, and perhaps not at my most lucid, and completely convinced myself that Jacob was stuck and wasn't going to come out. And I was going to have a baby halfway up my fufu forever. Yea... while not in labour, I can comprehend that you're not going to stay in that state one way or another for very long... at the time, not so much.

Jacob was 4.1kg when he was born - I know that's not huge huge, and I haven't had anything smaller to compare him to, but it was totally achievable (except for those odd thoughts while pushing ) And for a really big baby - my brother was 5.6kg (12lb 6oz) and Mum reckons he was her easiest labour.

Yup, most hospitals are getting strict with inductions. Most are 10 days over, some are 12 days over. You usually have to see an OB before they'll induce you as well. It is harsh when you have end of PG blues, but the risks of intervention are quite high once you have an induction and that can have consequences, so they want to be cautious. You'll hit me for saying this, but a normal PG is 37-42 weeks.

I did a bargain with my MW - at 41w2d I rang her in tears and asked her to book me in for 42 weeks. Just having the date made me feel so much better and much more in control. Maybe your MW could look at booking you in for a date next week - that way you have some certainty without rushing into an intervention when your body obviously isn't yet ready to give birth.

The last weeks are absolutely hideous - I've had 2 42+ week babies, so I understand where your head is at. But I've also had inductions not go so well, so it's why I am always a bit cautious about them being done too early.

I was induced at 38weeks because of H BP and pre-eclampsmia, I was going to chain myself to the ob chair at one stage when I was told I was going to be induced then told by another I wasnt, lucky I was so I know how you feel and I was only at 38 weeks!

But in saying that being induced if bubs isnt ready is not all its cracked up to be I was first induced Thursday night and didnt have bubs until Saturday night so over 48 hours from go to wo and in that time another girl was induced at the same time and walked out with her baby while I was still in that not much is happening land! very disheartening

hang in there and fliss is right maybe if you get a date or if it hasnt happened by this time then you can boook a date action plan from you mw may make you feel better?

I was induced at 40 weeks (high BP) and have to say it wasn't that nice an experience. Went into labour Friday night, had DD Saturday late night. I still think if I had gone naturally it would have been a completely different birth story. Like Kye, I had a lady in the room next to me who popped hers out in under 10mins! Almost ended in C-section due to DD getting stuck and not wanting to come out!

that's an interesting article, am a firm believer of what she's written after my experience. Unfortunately my BP was getting way too high to carry on.

I agree to make a date, it might make you feel like there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Hate to break it to you but Ive been discussing induction with my Obstetrician quite a bit lately, I have Gestational Diabetes so induction is highly likely if baby doesnt come on her own by 38-39 weeks.

Long story short, they only book inductions 7-10 days in advance, so even if you see your MW and she AGREES so send you for an induction, you will be waiting 7-10 days either way.

In saying that the whole swelling/protein in your urine will obviously be making them consider PE, and therefore I think you should be monitored extremely closely rather than just "left to wait and see"

Goodluck and hope that baby makes a break for freedom sooner rather than later! Maybe start on all the natural labour techniques if you havnt already? At the very least it will distract you hehe

Massive hugs to you..I kind of know how you feel. I was 10days OD when DS came.
I also had SPD but no placenta probs. SPD sucks. I used to cry putting my knickers on. Our shower is over the bath and even stepping in was agony!
One night in bed I was laying on my side and just sqeeeeezed my knees together really tight then I felt and heard my pubic bone click! It was freaky but gave mild relief.
Even now, I still can click that area!

Maybe try some natural induction things if your MW isn't keen.
Accupressure - there are some you can do yourself. Bounce on a swiss ball. Cry! surely crying will release some kind of hormone! And try relax! My MW says most labours start when a woman is relaxed thats why so many start in the night.

Gah blah blah blah lol sorry.

I hope your babe comes soon hun

Thanks for everyone replies. I am feeling a bit better this morning, like Pillow_Fight said, had a massive sob fest last night and we will soldier onwards, i guess.

Will ask midwife to see me more often to put my mind at rest, and to consider giving me a day, even if it is a 12 week over day, to shuffle on towards.

Pillow_Fight, i almost had to laugh, i'm sorry, about the knickers...now i sit on the edge of the bed, put them on the floor and kind of stir them around with my foot until i miraculously get my feet through the right holes. Its ridiculous, but at least its not just me..

I think it is definitely worth discussing....even if its to say " I need to know what plan B is if this baby doesnt come by itself. When will I be referred and at what stage will I be induced" So that you arent left worrying that you'll get to 7-10 days over and then have to wait to see someone etc.

I was induced with my second (OB did a scan at what we thought was 7 days over and felt that I had hardly any liquor and the placenta was deteriorating....she then asked if I thought I was further along than the scan had said which I did so we decided i NEEDED an induction). In all honesty for me, the mere thought that something was going to happen probably started it happening anyway as my induction took way less time than was predicted.

I was contemplating asking for an induction because I was overdue and live 3 hours from the hospital and wanted some predictability in an incredibly stressful time for me (MW issues).

This time however I have a MW I trust and going with OB again so I dont feel things will be as unpredictable this time.

But it is normal to want to do ANYTHING to get the baby out.

Yea, the only thing I didn't do was castor oil (didn't sound like fun - I'd rather be overdue than eat that stuff - and I believe it's not that safe). I REALLY enjoyed ordering increasingly hot curries from the local Indian place without DH complaining at all

Have you considered asking the MW about a stretch and sweep? Not an induction and I don't know if that would suit your circumstances but worth asking the question.

I had one done at +4 days and worked a treat. Baby was lying in my arms the following morning at 10am.

Word of warning, it doesn't work for everyone and can be a little bit uncomfortable. (Nothing compared to full on labour though.)

Best of luck, the last fews days of pregnancy suck!

I think we struck a deal, she'll refer me when i'm 7 days overdue instead of 10. I can handle that...i think

Right, going to go eat pineapple, a hot curry, go on the swings, walk down stairs and twiddle my nipples. Not necessarily in that order.

Thanks for the input/advice/opinions everyone

Bowie...try doing it all at the same time    That would be funny...and would certainly take your mind off waiting as you are misxing your pineapple into your curry whilst swinging down stairs twiddling your nipples

Good luck!

I hope it happens naturally, because inductions can be, well, not great. I was induced for high BP and gestational diabetes. They tried for 4 days to get labour started, and nothing, no dilation at all. It was incredibly difficult to go through, and by then end of that time I was ready for the c-section. Next time I am going to fight them on it.

Just to put a postive spin on induction - I was induced for both of mine at 41+5 both times and had quite successful induction experiences! It can be done!

The second time around I didn't want to wait as long, so got my MW to agree to a monitor at a week over and a scan at 10 days over (am glad that I did this as they discovered I was low in waters and so was induced the next day)

I think that some dates and goals to work to is a great idea - that last few days/weeks sucks!!

I was kinda hoping i would be favourable cervix/dilation wise anyway, i had a giant disgusting muscos plug/show over a week ago so somethings going on up there!!

No one would judge me for going to the famers carpark, walking down the stairs the taking the lift back to the top to repeat, would they?

Briandoli, i forgot to say thanks for the link.

Haha, I made my sister take me for a drive over the back roads at 40+5, we took as many gravel roads as we could possibly find.
I had DS the next day.

Bowie, first of all

I had SPD with both of my pregnancies. I would nearly be in tears and want to SCREAM trying to get out of bed. It was a struggle. I felt like a beached whale. Haha. It was painful to do anything

With #1 i had pretty much everything you just described, except for the placenta previa. I was in SO much pain in the end because of the SPD and the swelling i had was hideous. He had been in a perfect position for months then on my due date he had turned posterior and my MW said that's probably stopping me going into labour. I remember sitting at my mums place after my appointment and feeling so down and disappointed as i just wanted him OUT. I had my show 2 days before my due date and had intense back ache after that as well as irregular contractions for days before he arrived.

My waters broke 2 days after my due date at 2am but my labour didn't progress so was induced the following morning and he was born 8pm that night. That induction was crap so i won't share that (but my next one went really well). He was quite a big baby.

Hopefully you won't have to be induced. Just remember that you COULD go into labour at any time but even if you don't you know it's only a matter of days before he'll arrive.

I think it's perfectly normal to feel really down and not so excited when you're sore, tired, frustrated and it's hard to even move. It can feel like you're going to be pregnant FOREVER. I know i felt like that with my first.

Ok sorry for the novel. lol. Just thought i'd share my experience with you and let you know i understand how you're feeling. I do think it's all pretty normal for the last days of pregnancy, especially when you're overdue. I hope he makes his appearance soon.

Nothing new to add, just wanted to send my best wishes too. Hope baby arrives soon.

DS was induction followed by emergency CS. 40+2, clinical reasons, low LQ, low fetal movements and placenta failing. I won't do an induction again, it's natural or CS, but no induction.

Good luck Bowie,

If you do get induced they are not always bad, I got induced at 40+2 for high BP and had my baby 2 hours after they started. Plus my OB organised for me to be induced the next day. (saw her on a Thursday afternoon and was in hospital first thing Friday).

Hopefully things start naturally though!
