Firstly sorry this is another thread about tt, but there are so many I just can't read them all. So couple of questions we are trying DS just to see what happens I have no expectations really but just thought since i just stopped work and its summer that we should give it a go; How do you decide whether to use a potty or toilet seat? If you go toilet seat, can you get portable ones to carry when you go out??????????????????? What are your major dos and don'ts. We have had DS in undies all morning, he weed on the floor twice and in the toilet twice i'm pretty sure he needs to go for a poo too but when we put him on the toilet nothing happens, I have rewarded him with stickers and stamps for sitting there, he is down for a nap now so in a nappy. If I go out do I keep him in undies - or just try whilst we are at home for a while, does it matter if you chop and change?? -------------

for us we waited till last week(nearly three) and he is in undies at home and nappies when out.. (unless we are just going for a bike ride or something) he has had no wee accidents but does poo in pants so far..
i chose potty because I have another son and can't always leave him to take Ethan to the toilet and because he seems more confident on the potty.. haven't been out anywhere in undies so far but when we do we will take the potty ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

We used both and gave her the option every time she wanted to go to the toilet. When we went out in the car I used to take the potty with me and would just stop on the side of the road if she needed to go. I never ever made out going to the toilet being a problem. I always made sure the potty was in whatever room she was playing in at home to remind her to go. It made life very easy I must admit!
Whe you go out leave him in undies as I would consider putting him back in nappies as sending mixed messages. JMO though. DD TT herself at 20 months and I completely followed her lead. both my boys were three when they trained and they went straight to the toilet... Eden on the other hand we used a potty cause she was too little as she is fully trained now but not 3 till march.

My 2 both started on the potty and then changed to toilet seat when they decided to (I just followed their lead). We have a toilet seat insert which is small enough to take out in the car (bit big for a handbag though  )
Ollie was 3y 3m before he was remotely interested in TTing, and Lilia was 2y 9m when she decided she was ready. Thankfully O was TT'd within a couple of weeks and with Lilia, it honestly seemed like the day she decided to try, that was it, she was TT'd! Ok so its been a messy day He told us all day he needed to poo but when we put him on the toilet nothing, put him in nappy after bath and he went straight away. I am in no rush, just not really sure when to start for the best. -------------

but thats ok, when you say when they decided they were ready how do you mean, Fin is aware but not really into it at all, and although he knows when he is weeing I am not sure he knows before he wees that he needs to go.Posted By: floss

I never used the potty just because I didn't want to add another step to the process, we had a seat insert but when we went out I didn't bother and just made sure I held them on the loo so they didn't fall in!
Once the nappy was gone it was gone, we would only use it at night, I never put one on when we went out, as I didn't want to confuse the process, of toilet at home but its ok in the nappy when we go out, I was really lucky and we only had minimal accidents while out. All my kids were fully toilet trained by 2.5years and all out of night time nappies by 3 but I think I just got lucky! ------------- My beautiful big girl Sienna 15.04.06 Double the trouble double the fun Noah & Lola 10/11/07 |

We're just starting with a potty, mainly cos my PORSE boy who has just TT'd at home uses one, and DD wants to be the same! Nappy off all morning, 5 wees in potty, one whoopsie on the chair at lunch, then nappy for bed. She had a nappy on in the afternoon too, we were going out.
While it's only been a couple of days, she seems to think knickers are nappies and just goes in them (often straight away, like she's been hanging on), so even if we potty before going out we barely make it out the door before she lets go  . Any suggestions to get her over the weeing in the knickers?

I was just wondering the same thing. I think G is ready, she has been dry overnight every night for the last week cept last night coz she slept int. She goes in the potty 5 - 6 times a day if I put her on it and wants to wear undies, but she only really asks to go once or twice a day. If I see she needs to go (holding herself or crossing her legs) I will put her on but otherwise she will have an accident. I wondered whether she still hadn't got the idea of how to tell before she goes that she needs to...although if she didn't know then why would she cross her legs...? I asked the daycare teacher about the same thing SquishysMum and they said to leave undies/pull ups off G more often (ie barebum time the whole time we are at home if possible) and then try again with the undies in a couple of weeks when she had got better at going on the potty. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We used the potty as Jack preferred that, all attempts at the toilet failed. He was probably about 2y10m when he TT and got it really quickly, maybe because he was older?
I put the potty in front of the TV and told him to sit on the potty every hour or so to begin with. The toilet didn't work because he got sick of waiting, if he didn't wee/poo instantly he got bored and got off. Whereas he was happy to sit in front of the tv for a little while, so we had more success. After a few weeks or so DH told him the potty was broken and he needed to use the toilet know, and Jack was ok with that. Initially I put him in nappies to go to kindy but his teacher told me that would confuse him and to use undies all the time. So he was only in nappies at night but we were lucky to quickly lose those as well ------------- Lindsey

shelt if she is crossing her legs and holding it in she knows... sometimes you just have to get them into the habit of going to the toilet. Every hour or so ask them to go to the toilet/potty and have certain times like before dinner and going out that you have to go as well. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

squichysmum it sounds like maybe she isnt ready and if she is treating undies like nappies then stick to nappies when out.
After we moved house my daugher refused to sit on the toilet or potty without screaming (she wasnt TTed yet though) but i knew she was ready when she would hold on and cross her legs and do the toilet dance when she was in nappies still! We went straight for a toilet seat, because DD sees us going on the toilet so wanted to start using it too. (She uses the potty at my dad's house happily though) She started showing interest at 18months and would ask to sit on it, but didn't do anything on there till 20months. Then she did most of her wees on the toilet but I didn't put her in knickers till she was happy to do poos on the toilet at 22months - before that she'd come and tell me she needed to poo, and I'd ask if she wanted to go on the toilet and she'd say "No, nappy". She's been in knickers for a month now and not many accidents. We only have accidents when she's too busy playing and i miss her cues, but once she's done a little dribble in her knickers she yells out "WEES QUICK!!!" and holds onto the rest till I put her on the loo.
SM, Chelsea was the same at first when I'd put her in knickers she'd just wee in them, but would tell me she needed to go while in nappies or bare bum (I made a thread about it on here). That only lasted a few days though. We put the nappies away completely a month ago (except for at night which she still needs) and she goes to the toilet before we go out and I make sure to take her to the loo while we're out. We tried potty training but it didn't work because DD (3 1/2 years) wanted to be a big girl and go to the toilet. We took her pullups away from her after christmas and put her in knickers and gave her no choice.
We have a toilet seat insert for our loo. Our loo seats are quite big so clever father in law put a bigger wooden attachment on it so that the insert wouldn't slide around. We also have a fold up padded toilet insert that we purchased from The Warehouse that would fit most toilets and it can be put in a bigger handbag too! |
