We are planning a homebirth this time, and was thinking about birthing pools (my MW has one I can use if I want to). Only I didn't like being in the water while in labour with #1, I preferred walking around.
Did you cope with your 2nd labour in the same way as with the 1st? Did you find the same pain-relief methods helpful, or was it completely different?

For me, it's like each time I've got to know myself a bit better and have worked towards 'perfecting' the way I like to labour. I tried a pool (bath) with #1 but absolutely hated it. However since then I've used the shower instead and that works great for me. I tried a bath again with #3 - kinda by accident - and still didn't like it. Each time I've also had a little less pain relief too as I've got more confident and wanted more feeling, like when to push.

Ah interesting you didn't like the bath either busymum, maybe I'll just flag getting the birthing pool set up and use the shower if I want to.
I also tried gas last time but it made me vomit so not gonna bother with that this time either!! Didn't have time for any other drugs so hopefully it'll be the same this time (the quick labour that is, not much choice for drugs at a homebirth haha)

I would definitely use the birthing pool. Well ask your midwife to have it handy anyway. You never know you might want to give it ago. I guess its one of those things you wont really know until you are in labour.
If your midwife says she doesnt want it they might book it for someone else?? then if you change your mind you might not be able to get it?

You can birth in the bath if you change your mind about the water. If you were at the hospital you'd have a bath, not a pool, anyway. I didn't like the feeling of the water moving, was very unsettling for me. Showers are good, fentynal was good (part of epidural so not as strong and can be administered by mw through IV) but my active stage gets faster each time so I only have time for gas, thankfully it doesn't make me nauseous. Maybe you could have chocolate instead of gas

I hated being in the bath when I was in labor with C as well, so there was no way it was going to be included in my birth plan with Ty,like BM I find the pressure of a shower when Im in labour more helpful.
I know most women swear by the birthing pools, but they aren't for everyone.

I hated the bath but loved the birthing pool. THe bath just seems constrictive and yuck but the birthing pool was lovely and freeing. Strange I guess.
Definately planning on a birthing pool being part of my home birth this time round.
Sorry can't give you a second time round view as I haven't done that yet. Lol

I marched on the spot with Jake (seriously must have freaking hilarious!).
With Ollie I wanted to kneel and sway or rock on my hands and knees so totally different both times, Ollie wanted me to stand though, got a bit stressed if I wasnt!
I was in the shower for the early stage for both.

I loved the birth pool at hospital so much the first time that I got everything organised really early the second time to have one at my home birth, but DD2 came too fast and I never got to get in I still think it was worth it though, and I hired mine through http://www.aquabub.co.nz - www.aquabub.co.nz

Thanks ladies
That's another thing I'm thinking about HippyMama - my active labour was only 3.5hrs with DD and I've heard you can expect the time to halve with subsequent pregnancies, so not sure I'll have time to get it all filled up and get in! Think I'll talk to my MW about it at my next appointment...

My second labour was so much faster 1/4 of time!
I walked through my first labour and had every intention of walking through my second but I took one step once the contractions got to the point where I needed to manage them & it was like all my bones ground on each other so I had to stand in one spot, bend over and just breath. I ended up sitting down for most of it until I lent over the back of the hospital bed, I think if I hadn't sat down for my labour then it would have progressed even faster & DH would have missed the whole thing as he was 3 hours away.
Didn't get the chance to get in the bath, although it was there just in case as I requested it. So maybe request it & if you don't use it then never mind, better than if you really want it & don't have it.

I have only had one bubba, but I loved the birthing pool, I noticed such a bigger difference when I got in there and she was born in the water as well.

I would say ask for it, especially since you are at home and there is no drugs available.

They are hard going to get them filled. Poor DH was run off his feet getting ours ready. I loved it though, so would do it again, but if you don't think you'll really like it anyway, I wouldn't bother. Next time I think I'll get an extra support person just to be the pool-filler
