I am very much struggling at the moment with a two year old boy who not all the time but sometimes likes to beat up his friends. Yesterday at music he was great they all played together but then today at playgroup he hit one of them 3 times before settling in to play well with everyone but after he went a little feral    I really don't know what else to do so any suggestions much appreciated. We bite back he laughs we smack we time out we have tried most things so please someone give me a magic wand so I can fix this

Do you know what triggers it? I know that Jack gets very silly around friends when he is tired and I noticed today that he got very angry over little things due to tiredness. Sometimes kids behaviour deteriorates when they are hungry and/or thirsty as they don't have the ability to communicate or understand what is going on.
If you can recognise a trigger you could then try and avoid/reduce it.

Sorry not much help. Good luck

I think they tend to get a bit crazy when they are tired, and also they like the reaction. I would just pick him up and remove him everytime he does it, take him to a quiet spot and firmly tell him that we don't hit people then let him get back to it, you have to be consistent and do it everytime, it works for our boy, eventually.

thanks ladies! I had to laugh this morning I got my monthly email from babycenter on development and there was a piece in there on this behaviour. This is what it said

Controlling impulses and negative behaviour
Your child is slowly developing the ability to control his actions -- but at this age, he's still prone to a fair amount of pushing, shoving, yelling, and tantrums. You can't expect perfect behaviour from him all the time. Keep reminding him in positive ways that talking gets better results than physical action -- and make sure you praise him when he makes an effort to communicate with words.

So I am a little happy that its all ok and that what I am doing is what needs to be done so yeah. Thanks again

I say just keep on trying! Other Mums will appreciate that you are trying, even if it's not working yet.

Oh I might go have a look at Babycentre shortly.  I defo agree with what the others have said about taking him away and speaking firmly to him that hitting etc isn't nice.  I'd also not bite/hit him back etc as he'll probably get confused thinking if mummy/daddy can do it it must be ok.  Time out is great but I guess it doesn't work for every child.

yeah i dont think biting him will show him its not acceptable. after all kids tend to do what we do! definitely seeing what triggers him might help. or maybe it is always the same child/ren?

That was my son 5 months ago. I even stopped going places cos it was too stressful. He grew out of it ; now all the other boys in CG are going through it. It's a phase and it will pass. Watch for triggers and be consistent in how you manage it would be my advice.
