Hello!

My baby's only two days overdue, but it feels like much, much longer than that. I thought she'd be here weeks ago.

How do you cope?

The midwife was saying that if she hasn't come within 10 days of the DD, they'll make her come out. She was quite (probably rightly) brutal, mentioning ageing placentas and death in utero and other things that can happen if she stays in too long.

I really want to avoid a chemical induction and/or C-section, obviously.

What to do to relax and not worry about when she'll choose to put in an appearance?? How have other people coped with this? I wouldn't have believed how dreadful this bit was.

(I'm not really looking for techniques to induce labour myself- my medical advisor was firm that sitting on the deck playing with your nipples and scoffing down pineapple might be a way to while away an idle afternoon, but it doesn't actually work. Perturbing for the neighbours too, I imagine. )

Lol sounds like a fabulous afternoon on the deck

No advice really, just because I know what you're going through! DS was induced at 10 days overdue.
Oh actually one thing I did - I went and got an acupressure massage. Don't think it actually did anything in terms of bringing on labour but was LOVELY, nice to have a treat like that when you're feeling awful and huge and sick of waiting! If I'm overdue again this time I think I'll go a couple of times.

Hope your wee girl decides to put in an appearance soon

Thank you, AuntieSarah! Just wanted someone to moan to, really. The hugs are much appreciated. I'll look into the massage thing (but where do you put your stomach?).

Do something nice for yourself. Get out some DVDs and books, get a pedicure and manicure, get your hair cut. Bake and enjoy

A friend also made a helpful comment, that the baby needs to be in there a bit longer. It helped me shift my focus from "me me me, woe is me, life is terrible" to "OK, my baby needs to be in me a bit longer".

I am a 42 week mother - one son born at 42+1, the other at 42+2 and those weeks are LOOOONNNGGGGG. The thing I found hardest was the uncertainty. For DS2, I wanted to avoid induction till 42 weeks after a bad experience with #1s induction but I broke at 41 weeks and asked the MW to book it. She couldn't book me in till 42 weeks so it worked out, but for me just having that date was a huge thing for my mental state. I needed to know that there was a plan B - I still hoped plan A would happen, but if not, I had some certainty.

With massages, you lie on your side - you can get tables with holes for the tummy but it's not good for the tummy muscles.

BTW, your MW isn't necessarily correct about aging placentas and death. An EDD is just an estimate, some people gestate longer. They can up your monitoring once you're overdue - I had weekly visits with my MW, very strict instructions to ring her if I was worried *at all*, and I had a BPP scan at 8 days over to check my placenta, fluid levels and the baby. I also had regular CTG checks. That monitoring is pretty good at picking up issues if there are any.

That said, you need to balance what's best for you. In my case, DH couldn't have handled me going over 42 weeks as all his workmates helpfully told him stories of fetal death which scared the crap out of him. So for us, the right thing was to be induced at 42 weeks. And while the induction wasn't brilliant, we had a really good birth and a very happy healthy baby so that was all good

Good luck!

I went overdue with both (bout 7 days with the second, 8 with the first ) and expect this one to go over her due date as well.
It sucks, but apart from trying a few natural induction remedies the most you can do is wait, baby will come when baby is ready.
I think most first time mothers expect their babies to come on time, but the majority of first borns are over due and as Flissty said, the estimated due date is exactly that, an estimate.
Also, my friend went 24 days overdue, her baby was absolutely fine .

In the meantime, do all the things you wont be able to do once baby is here, sleep in late, go out for a nice meal, have long uninterrupted baths,go shopping with friends without lugging around a million and one bits of baby gear too,and murphys law the moment you make plans like going out to dinner, going to the movies, baby decides to get a move on

Flissty and TheKelly, thanks so much for your very helpful posts.

Flissty, thanks especially for mentioning the possibility of a BPP scan and other checks to make sure she's all right. It's nice to have things to bring up with the midwife.

TheKelly, thanks for making the point that most primigravidae go past the EDD. I'd actually forgotten! 24 days over, wow. That woman must have amazing mental strength.

Mostly, cheers all for understanding. :) Might help stop me from cracking up... and I'm only two days overdue? Still? I posted this today? Aaaaaaaargh!!

what flissty said! i am another one whose pregnancies all were 42+ and i had three of them, all induced! Unless you had a very early scan the due date is really an Estimate... and as Flissty said there are ways of checking everything is functioning as it should be. shame on your midwife for trying those scare tactics so early in the game too!

Flissty- HA! As you doubtless surmised, it did, and I can't emphasise enough how embarrassing this is, cross my mind to try calculating the hours. She was conceived in Moscow, so I was subtracting 8 hours and, bloody hell, it was ridiculous.

Dear Bizzy, thank you for your words! I'm sorry you had to get all those inductions, ugh. I like my midwife but sometimes get upset with how she puts things- I guess there's no nice way to put this stuff, though.. Still, did wish they wouldn't bandy about phrases like 'foetal death' in front of impressionable husbands. I think that, like Flissty's, mine will be getting antsier as time goes on.

Sarah,
3 days overdue and turning greyer by the hour.
(By the way, how can I be starting to go grey when I'm 25? But one rant at a time.)

Baby will come when baby is ready! There is an end and I don't think it's nice of your mw to say those thing, she probably didn't really think about it when she said it!

Also I was told pregnancy is 42 weeks not 40, although mine came at 39 and I had planned stuff for those last 3 weeks! Grr! Can't win I say!
Enjoy the time you have until baby comes!

Oh and 10 days is the norm, mine said once you get to about 10 days OD they look at induction etc. But even though my waters broke I still had to be induced, just not fully induced.

I know it's hard when you feel like a blimp and you want nothing more than baby to be out, but I second everyone who said make the most of the time! Watch some movies, get a massage or a pedi, catch up with some friends. Coz you will have precious few moments to yourself once baby arrives, at least for the first few weeks. I found a pedi really good, coz I felt like a hideous monster in the hospital and every time I looked down at my nice polished toes I felt a wee bit more attractive!

Having tried almost all the "remedies" to get baby out, I came to the conclusion that they come when they are good and ready.

Good luck tho, and I hope it all goes well!

I go over due with my babies as well, My son was born at 42 weeks, but I went into labour finally at 12 days over due, his labour was long and I had a emerg CS, but thats only to do with me!

My daughter was born at 9 days over due, I had an elective CS due to pervious CS, I was going tot ry naturally but at 7 days over due I was so fed up we got a CS booked in for 2 days later.

Its a really hard time being overdue, but try and enjoy the little time you have left to yourself like Flissty said, do something nice for yourself, get a facial or a pedicure or something.

Also, no oen can force you to be induced, a few ladies on here have waited util labour starts naturally and it usually does by 42 weeks, as long as baby is fine in there(and they can check with CTG and scans), then theres no reason why you cant wait it out. Dont let your midwife scare you too much

3 days overdue now! Working out the hours with that time difference sounds like it could take up a few hours lol.

Like Flissty said, with the massage I lay on my side The first half was on my feet and legs and then lay on my side so she could do my back
Just a foot massage would be lovely though wouldn't it!

I'm an overdue mama too. My first was 10days over. I went into labour naturally and it progressed really slowly so I ended up basically being induced anyway. Second was 9days over and I had a sucsessful home birth third was 11days over and I had another sucsessful home birth..After my first with me being so stressed and keen to get baby out it made for a very uptight labour and delivery, consecutive pregnancies I just relaxed and told myself the baby will come when it's ready, and just wait! So second and third were born into much calmer surroundings and it was lovely. To help me relax I tried not to dwell on how many days over I was by setting my own EDD of 42weeks rather than 40 weeks. So to me all my babies were slightly early
Enjoy your time with your partner and do things to keep your mind off it.
Good luck with the upcoming birth

Bless!

I recall everyone asking how I stayed so calm and relaxed even at two weeks od .. but I figured she needed more time and I wasnt going to force her out. I will however note, that she is the most impatient little person ever, so maybe I should have rushed her so she knew how annoying it is.

Its hard .. but chillax ... i spent most of my waiting time at the beach .. was bliss.

Oh and ageing placentas are only for old people arent they? Your just a youngin!

Normally just a lurker but I'm overdue too, 41 weeks yesterday and good to hear I'm not the only one who feels like they're cracking up. Had a big meltdown on Sunday morning after my second unsuccessful stretch and sweep, just made for a terrible night's sleep of cramps and backache. I feel like the highlight of my day is blood tests and peeing in a cup. Have a test free day so feeling better. Hope you're hanging in there too.

Dear ladies, all of you, thank you for your replies. They've made me feel a lot better.

FullHouse, setting your own EDD of 42weeks is a brilliant idea. Wow, I have another 11 days of worry-free omphaloskepsis left according to that calculation. Love it!

Blueberry, oh poor you. My midwife is going to start all that, um, invasive stuff tomorrow, I think. I'm glad you've got the day off from it. It's so nice to hear from someone who's in the same boat. Good luck!

I was 9 days overdue with DD and for the first few days it did my head in, as I am quite impaitent at the best of times! But then I planned things to do each day to keep myself sane and busy and looking back it was the best thing ever as it really was my last few days of freedom before bubs arrived!

I was quite relaxed about the entire induction thing as I was going to be strong about it and not let them induce me until I was 14 days overdue as I believed that DD wanted to stay inside for a bit longer for whatever reason and I was not going to be bullied into an induction (which petrified me!)

Oh and even tho I was 9 days over due I started getting contractions (mild) at 7 days so knew the end was in sight!

Keep hanging in there - you are doing such a great job. It's tough in those last few weeks - especially if you are keen for baby to arrive.

Depending on where you live your MW might not actually have much say on when you are induced Down my way they are trying to keep the rates of induction down (due to cascade of interventions leading to c-section) and now the general rule is NO induction prior ot 14 days overdue unless medically required. Try and push for more monitoring before you are induced (if that's what your are hoping for)

Have you got a paddling pool you can put your feet in? (use the baby's bath instead) get a couple of good books and try and enjoy some time to yourself.

That stretch and sweep stuff isn't pleasant but it isn't the worst thing I've had done either. Each time for me my midwife has said everything is well and truly in the right place but nothing comes of it. Had an ongoing show for over a week now and tightenings as well. I'm not sure what's a normal amount of testing but my body decided to swell like a balloon in the last month, hence why I have to get tested so often at the moment every second day (nothing wrong with me really just look like violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and I'm meant to stay at home an rest, which is boring but I know when baby is here there will be days where I will be wishing to have that time back.

I've got an apt tomorrow to plan an induction and will find out what happens from there. This is my first baby so not sure what to expect but I guess it's the unknown and not knowing what's normal for you is what makes it difficult.

PS Not doing the nipple, pineapple thing either!

S&Ss don't have to be awful and you can just think of them as preparation for labour

Another big piece of advice/encouragement I can give is that I promise, your baby WILL come out, either you will be induced or labour will start naturally, but whatever the situation I can assure you,you will NOT be pregnant forever, I know that it often feels like you will be giving elephants a run for their money...but in a months time, you will be looking at your empty tummy (and your baby in your arms ) and thinking that it seemed so long at the time, but now seems like a blur

LOL, my friend gave me an elephant on day 2 (or maybe 3) of the induction, to remind me that it wasn't going to go that long and the baby *was* going to come

Hi sjanenz just a quick update, my wee girl arrived on Wednesday the 8th at 1.30pm. Went into labour naturally on the Tuesday night. So 41 weeks and 2 days and glad she arrived as her placenta had a lot of calcification and her growth had slowed quite a bit too so she really needed to come out.

Hope things are going well and maybe your not overdue anymore. If not hang in there!

Going overdue sucks big time huh! Isla came out at 42wks (I went into natural labour only hours before I was due to be induced). I did end up having an emergenc C-Section after 32hrs of labour, but that was just cause my cervix didn't want to play ball that day. Stupid cervix
According to my dates tho, she was actually 19days over due......
To try and pass the time, I set up a 'guess the date' status on my FB and got everyone to comment on when they thought she was going to be born, so that was a fun way to pass the time, it kind of became more of a game that way and I stopped just sitting there thinking about how crap it was that I was still pregnant. My smart a*se of a brother always picked the 24th Feb as the birthdate, only cause it was the last possible day for me to have her, and well, he's just plain evil lol. Turns out, he was right!

Overdue is such a tough time. I reckon it's getting you ready for what's ahead cos you're so keen to go into labour you're looking forward to it!

I's like to agree with some others about the induction thing tho, don't let them hurry you into it if you don't want to. I have friends' who have gone over and been monitored and safely delivered their babies. My sil had her 2 last girls at 21 days over and 16 days over. The EDD is an estimate.

At about 7 days over your mw will book you in for a scan and they'll have a look at baby's growth, how the placenta is functioning and how much fluid is around bubs. Based on that you'll get some advice about induction.

Your mw can also do an internal exam to see if your cervix is starting to efface. If it is you can have a stretch and sweep and that shouldn't hurt if cervix is favourable, but if cervix is hard then it will bloody hurt if she does it.

I was really against having an induction unless required and would have gone over so i just tried to focus on the next thing, like the scan, the s&s etc.

But yep it sucks waking up every morning and going 'well another day and still intact'. Everyone survives it tho one way or another. Most people do go over and also do go into labour before induction.

FX baby comes soon for you, hope it's not too humid wherever you are!
