Hi,
DD is now 16 months. Mostly she is on 2 BF a day, first thing on waking and last thing before bed. Sometimes has one after her nap, if its a hot day, but other than that doesn't ask for it and I don't offer. I'm happy to feed her till she is two, but after that I'd like to give my body a break. I have struggled to produce milk and would like to have another bub. Feeding two of them has zero appeal and I'm not sure I could physicaly do it. I have actually found it hard to get good weaning info. There's so much out there about feeding babies and super extended BF, but nothing on how to actually do it. DD will not drink from a bottle so has not been an option for me. Where do I start? Am wondering if it will be eaiser when her language is at the stage where I can explain that its all gone etc? And am worried about settling her at night without a BF 15 mins before bed and am looking for how to phase that out without drama. Kinda hoping she'll do it herself... |

One thing I've always done with DD (9mo) is saying 'All gone' or 'Finished' when there she has eaten all her food, or is mucking around on the boob and she knows 'no more' iygwim, perhaps you could just start saying it after a feed or her meals, etc so she starts to learn for when you do wean her. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Tonight is the first night i've put bubs (14 months) to bed without a BF, usually she feeds herself to sleep. She was sooooo tired as she is moving to one nap a day that she crashed out in 5 mins and didnt even realise she hadn't had her milk. I honestly thought she would scream and scream about it but she didn't 
Im a little sad to be stopping the milk (have yet to drop the morning one as she wakes up at 5am for it  ) But also glad in a way to be getting my body back and also Im not all that sure I have much milk there anyway!
The only thing Im concerned about now is making sure she gets enough calcium as like your bubs she won't take a bottle of milk or even in a cup, she'll have a sip then throw it across the floor lol. So sorry not too much help except to maybe just try putting her down one night and see what happens, if she screams get her up and feed her if not well..... your one step closer to weaning  ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I just finished feeding Ben 2wks ago. He was feeding before naps and bedtime as well as during the night.
I dropped the feed that created the least fuss first which I decided was bedtime. So I just gave him a drink of cows milk in a bottle with a silicone spout (similar to http://www.tommeetippee.co.nz/products.asp?pk=2&seq=2 - this ) and he was actually pretty good about it. He still got a bit of a similar sucking action going. I did everything the same as our usual routine as well as holding him in a similar way to bfing. I had been casually giving him a cows milk drink at times during the day for a while before this. A week later I dropped the pre-nap bf, which also went pretty well. I dropped the middle of the night feeds last which didn't go so well as he was bfing to sleep and I didn't substitute with milk, plus he is a boob addict. Hope you get some ideas from this ramble ------------- Lindsey

If she's only on two a day and doesn't ask for it thoughout the day it probably won't be too hard. I was the same with my son, but weaned him at 15 months. I dropped the night feed first which I thought would be hard but it wasn't, I just did all his other night time routine - stories, song etc, and put him to bed no fuss. Didn't mention the milk. About a week later I just didn't offer the morning one. We made sure we didn't say 'milk' for about a month afterwards lol, and that he didn't see me without a top on lol.
As long as she's eating a varied diet she shouldn't need a bottle, you can give her cows milk in a cup if you want to  My son is allergic to dairy and wouldn't drink soy or rice milk when I weaned him so I just made sure he was having enough soy/rice milk in food during the day (soy yoghurt, rice milk in porridge etc).

i weaned Ella just before she was 2. she was feeding 2x a day- early in the morning (around 5am and then going back to sleep) and before bed at night. I dropped the bedtime feed first- I explained to her there was no more milk and told her she was a big girl now and could have a milo before bed (which she thought was great). Then when she woke early in the morning I explained there was no more milk and gave her a cuddle and then she got a cup of milk with her breakfast. Only took a couple of days and it was pretty easy in the end. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

i weaned at 15mnths after agonising about the same things....
i had a double blow by not only him loving his BF but also me feeding to sleep ..
he just wasnt into bottles at all. i tried substituting one feed with a bottle (formula and expressed to get him used to it)...no go. in fact most things i tried just were not happening. in the end i stopped cold turkey!!!!no more. very emotional for me but i had to remind myself that it was waht i wanted and that it was taking its toll on me....plus i did not want to BF a child much over one yrs old. it involved keeping him very busy....to keep his mind off it. (all hands on deck from the family) and at night he was offered a bottle which he refused so was put to bed and left. he did cry but it wasnt for long at all...in fact he got on extremely well and by a week he was over it completely. he was a good eater so the fact he went from 2-3 BF a day to no milk at all didnt matter and i have learnt that they can survive quite fine. alot of this process was made worst by myself and what i THOUGHT needed to happen.s for years so i was used to that. i have learnt he will easily sleep without the comfort of the boob. best of all......everything is SO MUCH EASIER!!!! he is just picked up and put in bed...no feeding for 20 min i have so much time left...... ...i am free plus the bonus of losing some of thatr unwanted body fat that lurked around when feeding!!! lose weight when BF...what a load of crock! good luck....just do it...but you need to be committed and strong willed! ------------- http://www.magicalkingdoms.com/timers/">

Thanks - nice to know am not alone. Have had some progress. DD is less interetsed in pre bed feed, sometimes only taking one side, and I think that eventually I could get to the point that she'll be happy with a story only like she does before her nap.
I think if I waited until after breakfast to see her she'd start to drop the morning feed too if she doesn't see me she's happy to eat her porridge. From what you have all said, its not going to be as bad as i had thought. |
