Hi ladies,
Can anyone recommend a good midwife in the Wellington area? I live in Karori.
It's my first pregnancy so I want someone who's happy to explain things and answer questions...
Any recommendations, or ones to avoid would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Check out the 'recommend your midwife' thread in this forum.
That's where I picked mine from (Victoria Panteleeva). Can't say how it's worked out for me yet though
My midwife for DS was competent but we didn't "click" wouldn't go back even if I was still in her area. However I'm sure competent but not chatty is better than chatty and incompetent.
Hope this one works out better.

Michelle Vincent!!!!! She's in the Ngaio Medical Centre and she was just fabulous throughout my pregnancy and including the post natal care! PM me if you want her number... Other wise you can just ring the medical centre and get it!

After spending a week and a half calling midwives the only one i got through to Margaret Hadley! Michelle is away when i am due (end of June)
Though Margaret is away last two weeks of June too i think but i only need her till January. So depends when your due!

I have to say, Victoria Pantaleeva in Johnsonville was my midwife and she was excellent! She is very chatty and good at explaining everything, and she really knew her stuff.

Margaret told me when I rang she didn't do first timers...
Have heard good things about Victoria (although apparently very pro natural birth?)
And also Rachel McTavish is good, she was my MIL mw for her 3rd boy (he's now 12) and she was my back up! (She was also more willing to tell me bubs position/how engaged) whereas Michelle preferred not to discuss it with me.

Thanks heaps for your comments everyone
It seems like all the midwives people recommend are either away or fully booked for when I am due (end of June)... Has anyone used Libby Neal from Capital City Midwives? So far she is the only one I've found who is available.

I've heard Wanni is really good and I actually did have her when Margaret was on one of her many breaks lol....she was sweet & funny- one of my friends is having her now for her 2nd bub. I think Rachel McTavish might be Michelle Vincents backup? Can't remember lol. Wow so June sounds like a busy time to have a bub! Jade can you ask the girls in the june Due thread who they are using? Might get a few more hints!

Oh, chiming in to say that Wanni started off my induction and was there for half of my labour because Victoria was at another birth. First time I'd met her and she was lovely!

Lol good to know! Actually I had a lot of pregnant woman saying they were jealous because she was all booked out but I didn't call her until 9-10 weeks! Margaret was my first call though due to all her experience! Must have rung at least 10 people before Michelle though!

Ah no sounds like Margaret isn't so good.. oh well thankfully i only need her for a couple of scans and maybe some tests.. She really was helpful on the phone though, really nice when i told her i was moving to Australia and had no idea what i was doing..? She told me to call her back if i had no luck with Libby Neal or some other lady and all i got was answering machines from them and several others for a few days. Going to see her today so guess i will see how it goes

She's not bad Panda- just very upfront and direct and I didn't find her overly empathetic. She also did take LOADS of holidays when I had her...I think 3 lots of 2 weeks from memory?! But then having said that she certainly knows her stuff so you most def don't have to worry about that side of things. Maybe I caught her on a bad year hehe

Victoria Panteleeva is very keen on natural, but more than happy to go with the flow and do the drugs thing too, she said to me it's whatever the mum wishes, which is great because I want to try water birth but also know that if it's not how I want it to be that she is very supportive (and experienced) with the drugs as well.

Ok been to see Margaret and first impressions for DH and I were that she was great I didn't feel like she was upfront or abrupt but that she listened to me and was very easy to talk to, she was also concerned about my history and wants to make sure i have all the right information for when i go to Australia where i will be birthing. She definitely knew her stuff like you said as i had no idea being rhesus -ve could be bad for baby if DH is rhesus +ve (she is getting him to do a blood test). So hopefully Emmecat you did catch her only on a bad year, though she is away a few days over christmas.. but so am i so i will let her off for that it means i get my scan earlier anyway!

Yay Panda! That's so good that you got on with her, that's the most important thing. I've had a few friends not like her at all either BUT it's so different for different people and we all need different things from our mw's . She certainly does know her stuff, and that of course is a big thing!!

Thats true! I would definitely say that though i don't think i am overly anxious about being a first time mother (well maybe a little), i do prefer to have someone with a lot of experience giving me advice (though i wont always agree with them!).

glad you took the recommendation for Victoria! she is so supportive. she told me that a lot of ladies currently on her book were returning second time mums, so i think that says a lot

I had Toni Dalgliesh for my recent, first, pregnancy and can't recommend her highly enough. Friendly, supportive, professional. I thoroughly enjoyed my pregnancy, birth and early baby days and she was a big part of that.

I'm with Harbour City midwives. When I first got to Wellington, I had a bit of trouble getting hold of the first few I tried - Margaret was not available, and someone else had an answering service but never contacted me back. HCM actually replied to me, and seemed friendly (via text message), so I decided on them - kinda of needed someone quick smart, as I'd already booked my 12 week scan and needed someone to receive the results!
It's four midwives based in Newtown who share the practice. You get whoever is freshest. I've met all four of them now, and am quite happy with their care. I had a distressing time when it turned out I never got the first trimester blood tests I was supposed to (I handed in the form for them at the wrong place). Amanda had it all sorted out, results back and reported on, within a week.
Only up to Week 26, so we'll see how this works out.
