I've been told both NO ham or deli meats and ham/deli meat is ok if it's heated to hot (i.e. in a homemade toasted sandwich or on a pizza).
Which is correct?
I love love love ham and cheese tosties.

I ate ham and cheese toasties through both pgs. From what I can remember it is fine as long as it it cooked/heated to piping hot.
My SIL was told that the vaccum packed ham you can get from the supermarket (ther branded stuff like Beehive) was fine to eat cold but it had to be eaten as soon as you opened it
As far as I am aware the reason deli meats are a no-no is because you don't know how long it has been there, how well it has been kept cold etc

I would go for the packed stuff if you can. Alot of the supermarkets do the same ham as in the deli in sealed packets, which you know have not been exposed to the air all day and have been treated in the same way as the rest of the meats.
the only problem with heating is that while you will kill the bacteria, there is no guarantee that you will destroy the toxins that they may have produced.

I ate some ham heated to piping hot I thought that was OK.
The food safety website says that a small amount of the branded stuff that was vacuum packed in a factory is OK. The vacuum packed stuff done in house at the supermarket is not. You need to consume it immediately upon opening, so it wouldn't work to open it and put in a sandwich to eat at work later.

I eat hot deli meat all the time, my midwife said it was fine so long as it was piping hot, like on a pizza or in a toasted sandwich. She did say not to eat salami though as it's never actually been cooked properly, just cured.
