My baby was 6 weeks prem but with no major problems, she just needed to learn how to suckle. She got this pretty quick and until now breastfeeding has been a breeze. She's a little refluxy but we have that under control with ranitidine.
But the last few days she's been a bit fussy on the breast. Pulling off after a few sucks and crying, then latching again etc. It was worse in the evenings but up until tonight she'd eventually just feed properly. But tonight every time she latched on she'd pull away and start absolutely screaming, even before she'd start sucking. This went on for about 30 mins until she wouldn't even latch anymore she was so hysterical. I'd settle her a bit then try her again but the moment I got her anywhere near the nipple she'd start the hysterics again. I resorted to the bottle which she took straight away then after she'd had about 50ml I put her on the breast - no problems at all. Any ideas what's going on? I haven't had this happen to me but I don't think babies can go off being fed. I'm just going to suggest random ideas.
Is it one side more than the other? Maybe try hand expressing to get the flow going before she latches on. Or can you try her in a different position? If it's always at the same time of day, is there something different happening. Something new in your diet perhaps?My DD used to pull back on one side (ouch) and a trip to the chiropractor sorted that out. Don't give up, often these things settle down again it may be that she's coming down with something. You can always try a lactation consultant or La Leche will give advice over the phone. No it's both sides. I have a great let down so the milk is flowing well. I thought it might have been a fast let down issue but noticed that she was getting distressed before even sucking. I tried different positions but they were all the same. It seems to get worse as the day goes on. It was just weird that once she'd had a bit by bottle she was perfectly happy to go onto the breast but I can keep that going for a few days if that's the only way to get her to BF. Maybe she'll just settle down again.

Could it be something in your diet? Lily did this a couple of weeks ago and it was rather stressful. Turns out she has a bit of eczema and every time I have cheese her poos were runny and completely not like BF poos iygwim!
But she would get very hysterical when I pulled my breast out, even though she was hungry! Otherwise could she maybe feeling a bit unwell? Sore tummy? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Hmmm, first 2 feeds today have been absolutely fine. I did wonder on the weekend if it was because she needed a poo (she's a once/week gal) but she had a huge one yesterday morning so it shouldn't have affected her into the evening. When you gave her the bottle was she in a different position? Sitting upright more the reason I am asking is often if littlies have ear aches then lying down can hurt them quite abit and they arch up then.

That's interesting about the ear ache. I'll need to keep an eye out for that. I don't think it was that this time though because I did try to feed her completely upright but it didn't seem to help.
