My husband and I have been trying for children for about 2 years. We have just done tests with my doctor, my husbands tests came back fine but with mine it showed that i didn't ovulate in that cycle. I also did an ultrasound, but that was all normal.
My doctor said that some women have an anovulation cycle. She has refered us onto the fertility specialists but its going to take about 6 months until we get an appointment. Is there anything i can take e.g vitamins (other that folic acid) or anything else to help my chances of falling pregnant? Thank you for your help in advance! |

I'm really sorry to hear you've had such a hard time so far. One option would be to self-refer to a specialist and see them privately. It costs about $150 at Fertility Associates in Auckland for an appointment, and you can usually get in within a month, I've heard Fertility Plus is even cheaper. Based on what you've said I suspect they might want to try you on Clomiphene (Clomid) which can help women with annovulatory cycles. A monitored cycle of Clomid costs (at FA) about $250, and includes blood tests and scans. I don't think the government covers this cost even if you waited for a publicly funded appointment. If it's an option, I'd say it would be worth making an appintment with a specialist privately, just to find out what's going on with your cycle, and what your options actually are. Thanks for the advice, i think i will phone and see when i can get an appointment. I think its probley worth going private for ashort while!

| Also I would recommend going to see an alternative therapist. There are lots around who may be able to boost your fertility without the drugs. Worth a try for 6 months before you launch into IVF if you don't have to. |

I'd agree with both going privately to a specialist and seeing a naturopath and/or acupuncturist. I'd also recommend charting your cycles using BBT (basal body temperature) and other fertility signs to see when/if you ovulate each month.
I'm doing or have done all of these after laparoscopic surgery showed I don't have any physical reason for not conceiving. I'm hoping to conceive our first child soon after 2+ years of trying, so I know how hard it can be! If you do decide to try charting come and join us in the Planning Pregnancy/Charting Girls thread! Definitely self-refer. In most parts of the country, you won't qualify for public funding for the appointment even if you wait for your Drs referral, and so it's worth just calling them up and booking privately. You'll pay the same money.
Most places also have a cancellation list - ask to go on that. They have heaps of cancelled appointments - you only get a few days notice, but it's worth it and could cut a few months off the wait! -------------

| Hi enmap. I went under a gynacologist about 3 years ago when they found out I don't ovulate every cycle either and I did about 1 year of clomiphene. This didn't result in a pregnancy but I had other problems as well as my husband having very low sperm count. I have heard of lots of women getting pregnant from clomiphene tho so might be worth a go. We ended up doing IVF and am now 12 weeks pregnant so all the best and I hope you get your BFP soon. |
