Hi there

Am just interested to know - if your toddlers is in a private preschool / Kindy do they change nappies?

The one where we have O seems to have a no #2s changing policy - they ring the parents to come in and do it. Which is a huge pain in the ass if I need to go further than 10mins away from home to do anything.

I wondered what is normal in these situations. I know that at AKA Kindys they need to be toilet trained....

That is terrible MF!! Have you asked them what there policy is on this or is that it? I would think that if this is the case then they effectively mean that they have to be toilet trained before starting...

They do state when you enrol them that they wont change "messy" nappies - although I am not sure what that actually means...but it also seems to be a verbal thing rather than an official policy? There are tonnes of kids in nappies...

I would be fairly sure that they can't have a policy that states that!

So do they change wet nappies?

The ones I have spoken to want the kids to be fully toilet trained before starting as they don't have a changing area available and for hygiene reasons. I can understand why they want this. But they have also said the rare accident is fine.

They are not a daycare they are a private preschool - so think thats why they can make rules like this!

Private kindy here and they change all nappies no matter whether its #1's or #2's!

For all toilet trained toddlers, they line up at 10am before morning tea and all go wees.

Its then all marked on a whiteboard in the bathroom, all childrens names are listed and a tick next to wee or poo/nappy change and at what time they go.

O tends to do it at the end of the session (at mat / story time)....so I always end up changing him as soon as I get there. Its only an issue on those days when he does it close to the end of the session and they leave him until I get there....and I think sometimes that can be up to 25mins....(the theory being that its nearly the end of session anyway....)

We're at a private childcare, 6months -4yrs, and absolutely the nappies are changed. I'm not sure what the rules are with hand foot and mouth though, that may be a case where they wouldn't, but obviously that is an extreme circumstance and usually they most definately do. If for whatever reason they aren't happy, e.g if a child has the runs, they'll change the nappy first, and then call the parent.

Just a quick question - what is a private kindy? I am not sure we have them in ChCh.

I know pre school, daycare and kindy but where does private kindy fit?

you would think that if they have a policy of not changing #2's that they would say no to children who have no been toilet trained.

it is all very well ringing the parents to come and change their child's nappy but if the parent is at work it means stopping work and with some jobs you cant just stop what you are doing there and then and then coming back.

to me it should be all or nothing

montessori is a private kindy. their policy is if the child isnt toilet trained they wont take them (or at least it is here in palmy) because their philosophy is about encouraging independance which is included in toileting. I dont know of any other private kindy but then palmy is small.

Yeah thats the sort of place Kebabkat - ours calls itself a Preschool. But there are lots of them in Auckland, they are normally affiliated with a church or particular philosophy (ie Steiner).

Yep ours is affiliated with the Presbyterian church in front of it. The main difference in Auckland is that they cost a lot more than the public kindy but they also take them about a year earlier.

That is just wrong, I work at a private preschool/daycare and no matter what age we change nappies regardless if it is wees or poos, I can't believe that they would make the parent go and change it! you pay them to look after your kid which also means doing the dirty work!

The poor kiddies I'd change kindys if they pulled that one on me thats ridiculous! I'd also hope they didn't make the child feel bad about having to get their parents back in either!!

So Flake, what the difference between a private kindy and daycare?

'Quote from DH'

'A private kindy is just a name according to the goverment, a daycare can run as a kindy and call itself a daycare, a preschool can run as a daycare and call itself a kindy etc. There is no legislative difference between anything thats privately owned.

Day to day for a parent, If a childcare centre is not 'private', then it is a goverment run centre so to speak. They stick to the 1:15 ratio, whereas private centres are at 1:10, or 1:5 for under twos.'

TBH I'm not too well versed in the actual differences between them both as I only know this one inside out, I've not had any other experiences with centre management.

ETA: Private centres are run at a minimum of a 1:10/1:15 ratio :

The private kindy we attend has a max of 25 children and no less than 4 - 5 teachers throughout the sessions and also an office lady who is very hands-on aswell.

hey, my two boys go to a preschool (private) and they change anything from nappies to undies, and rinse the undies before putting them in a plastic bag for you to take home. everything is written down for the parents.

but i think says tht yur child can not go to preschool, kindy or anthing like that because they are not toliet trained is discrimanation (sp) do they reject children for disabilitys? every child learns at their own pace. if i was you i would go in and tell them its not fair to do this to a child, its not like they know better.

well thats my two cents anyways... good luck
