Hi, DS has always been a good sleeper, but in the last fortnight has been really unsettled. He had a few gastro bugs a couple of weeks ago and that woke him a bit in the night but since then has been fine. All of a sudden he cries when he goes to bed - not badly but he used to just talk himself to sleep and then once a night he will wake crying at a random time and is normally awake for an hour to 90 minutes regardless of what we do. I have tried leaving him to cry, or offering water, or giving a cuddle, he does ask for milk, but he always asks for milk and he eats plenty to not need it, plus he drinks a lot at bedtime. He just seems to be really awake, if I go and sit next to him he stops crying but is wide awake, as soon as I leave the room again he cries until his hour/90 minutes is up and then he is back to sleep. It also isn't every night, it has been the last three but then we can go 3 or 4 days where he doesn't wake. It normally means he wakes a lot later in the morning, which would be ok but I need to get up early for work. He is teething a bit, but I would have thought if it was teeth waking him he would be screaming in pain and not go quiet, where as he cries but its not loudly and then grizzles then talks, then back to crying, but its not the kind of crying that you need to rush to, its more like angry I don't want to be awake crying. Any ideas?? Also what are your bedtime routines, ours has worked since the start but like I said now he gets upset after we go, not straight away but it does happen. All suggestions welcome - my last hope is that it is a phase and will end soon. -------------

Jack used to wake with teething and he wouldn't cry (unless I left the room) but would just stay awake and not go back to sleep for ages, I found that ibuprofen helped alot better than pamol. He would still wake but wouldn't be awake for as long
Could it be a separation anxiety thing that is causing problems at bedtime? We have always had to assist Jack to sleep, he seems to need to know that we are there. Our bedtime routine has changed numerous times over the years but our current one is: 5.30pm We all have tea together 6pm DH baths the boys 6.30pm I feed Ben and put him to bed DH watches an episode (or 3!) of Thomas with Jack, then milk, 2 books, then Jack listens to his audio stories while DH sits in the hall by Jack's door so that Jack can still see him. DH either has a nap *sigh* or folds the washing if I leave a basket for him hehehehe!! I think that it is going to be a long while before we can leave Jack to go to sleep on his own and I have finally come to terms with that. This is the easiest way we have found, it is less stress for everyone and no crying involved and generally takes 10-15mins I hope it is just a phase, it can be hard on you especially with having to work as well. both my kids teethed like that............but also you may want to get throat and ears checked........found out my boy had numerous ear infections and know the signs now and my girl has been having them..........mia currently has one so she will be screaming and then laughing..............kids are stressful. also my boy went through just a random growing pains so scould be that age...best of luck------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">
