I have been resisting putting Oli into a bed because he loves his cot so much and we have only just got him sleeping through the night. Am after any tips for moving him into a bed, we will just take the side off his cot first, then we have a special little blue bed for him. He has never slept in a single bed or in our bed with us, so am nervous as to how it will go. He generally sleeps upside down or across his cot so how will he go in a bed? How do I get him to stay in bed? Any tips for making this easy on everyone? |

Issy wouldnt sleep in the cot without the side on because it was "broken" so she would always end up on the floor or under the cot .. so we got her a toddler bed and she has slept fine in it from day one.
(I suppose that wasnt much help lol). Although I will say that because she was in a toddler bed, she was on her normal mattress so it may have smelt like her bed? ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! I dunno if this will be helpful or not but we completely got rid of the cot and just went straight for the bed cause with the cot still up he wanted that.
But by doing that we were able to put his cot matress on the ground so if he slept in weird position and fell out he would have something soft to land on. He never fell out but it was good to have it there. Good luck! |

We have a toddler bed too, I never thought of putting his cot mattress on it - good idea! I like the idea that it will "smell" comforting. I suspect Oli will think that his cot is "broken" too, maybe I should make the little bed up and put it in his room to show him before we try to make him sleep in it?

Yeah we made the bed up, put it in her room and took her cot mattress out and all her bedding and put it in that (we kept her cot up just in case) .. she didnt have a problem, so we took the cot down the next day. ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! my girl started climbing out of her cot so we had no choice but to do it when we did ... but I had started talking about being in the big bed a few weeks before and we had her bed up in another room so she could see it... She was quite happy to be in the bed and stays in it or gets back in after mucking around a bit... I have had to stand at the door a few nights telling her to stay in her room over and over but she has learnt now (although I do often wake up wih her next to me in the morning which I don't mind at all)... We put her straight into a full size bed with no probs, she has her ruggy so guess that provides comfort... I did have her cot mattress on the floor for awhile incase she fell out but she hasn't and she was one of those crazy sideways sleepers too  ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |

Just go cold turkey - but give him a pillow in the cot for a while if he doesn't have one already as it often helps them stay more still.
Also putting all of their bedding over onto the single bed for a while helps. |

We decided on a Saturday morning to put J into a bed, so DH went out and purchased it that same day, while I talked to J excitedly about it. When he returned we all went into J's bedroom and disassembled her cot and put up her new bed. We purchased a trundler bed so we just pulled out the trundler at night so that if she did happen to fall out she would fall onto the lower bed. Some people purchase a side guard which can also help while the child gets use to the bed.

We took the side off the cot and that worked really well. After about a month we moved her into a single bed with no problems. To stop her rolling out I rolled up a towel and put it down the side of the mattress under the fitted sheet. I still do that now she's in her big bed.

WE had no probs Sam, tried him in a bed at mums and that worked really well, I just got DH to take the cot out before we got home and he never looked back. Interestingly, Luke was a terrible sideways sleeper and he has never done that in his bed, so you might be pleasantly surprised.
We did have the bed in his room for a few weeks before moving him into it - just to get him used to it - but he would never think about sleeping in it until his cot wasn't there anymore. Good Luck!! He'll be fine ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

One day whilst jumping in the cot, the cot went CRACK. Down it came.
Thomas slept on the matress on the floor with the legs taken off the cot so it was like a frame round him for a week, then we got a new big boy bed. We spent a week of him getting up and down etc, he hated it! after that I worked out that it was just too much room for him, so we packed half the bed with toys etc, rolled some towels up at the floor side so he wouldnt roll out and we were away laughing! Cept now he's on a sleep strike and wont sleep anywhere. Oh except when he sneeks into our room and climbs into the empty bassinet! I think its like anything with toddlers, if you are going to change something on them that they have always known, just like getting rid of a dummy, or giving up bottles etc then some just simply aren't going to like that you have changed it and it will take time, sometimes they will protest but if you stick with it they eventually get over it. Its a bit like sleep routines, if you try something for a few days and it doesn't quite go according to plan and you go back to the old then it makes the next time you try that much harder more often than not. No offence or anything intended, I just wanted to say that if it were me and I were wanting him in a big bed I'd bite the bullet, get rid of the cot and ride out the protesting. I say this cause theres a mum at Daniels daycare who was saying how much trouble she had getting her little guy into a big bed and the moral of her story was that she wished that instead of trying for a few days and then giving up that she had just rode it out for a few weeks instead cause thats what they ended up doing after several failed attempts and its worked, hes in a big bed at home and at daycare now and hes a happy lil man in his bed
