Just wondering if any ladies out there have done this? I will be having a hospital birth but want to labour at home as long as I can. I love water so am thinking of hiring a birthing pool so I can labour in comfort at home before going to hospital when absolutly neccessary.

The lady that ran our antenatal classes hired one out. It was $80 including $50 bond, from memory, so $30 hireage.
I ended up using our MW's one which she didn't charge for, but we were planning a home birth so not sure if she'd have lent it if we weren't staying home. It did put a bit of a dent in our power bill though 
I think if you weren't planning on birthing in it, a bath would probably be almost as good, and heaps easier to fill! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Yup I hired mine from Aquabub, but as Kelly has put it I never ended up using it - DD2 had other ideas and was born a bit quicker than we were expecting (planned homebirth).
Personally if I was going to hire a birth pool for at home, I'd just stay put - getting out and getting dressed to transfer in heavy labour / possibly transition could be pretty awful IMO and best to stay as relaxed as possible. ------------- Mama to two earth walkers & two angels. that is the only thing putting me off hippymama.... getting out to go to the hospital.. though not sure I would get dressed as such... a dressing gown would suffice!
My bathroom isnt big enough to have people in their with me and its a smallish bath anyway... heavily pregnant heffalumps only just squeeze in LOL -------------

Thanks ladies. Once at hospital I will be on monitors and a bed hence my desire to stay at home for as long as poss. MW supports me not sure my ob will but I may not tell her my intention.
Previous C section due to eclampsia is why hospital want full monitoring. Of course if things are turing pear shape I will go straight to hosp but if all is ok then I want to use the birth pool. probably not quite $100, but perhaps would have been if we'd had to keep it warm longer. I ended up needing to go to hospital - which wasn't actually that bad, although my labour had pretty much stalled and I was exhausted by then so was only awake during contractions. We used the pool for about 6 hours, so if everything went smoothly you'd probably have the baby by then.
We emptied the hot water cylinder, as well as running 3 kettles and 2 big pots continually boiling water. I'd guess those were running constantly for maybe an hour and a half, but I was concentrating on the contractions, so I really have no idea! ------------- http://lilypie.com"> http://lilypie.com">

The Wellington Homebirth Association hire out birthing pools - check out http://www.homebirth.org.nz/associations/wellington.html - their website . Another option is to buy your own birthing pool, which you can keep and use when the kids get a bit older. Eg the http://www.h2ohbaby.co.nz/ - H2OhBaby! pool costs around $250, including delivery, and comes with everything you need. |

I had a homewaterbirth in Jan. I ended up buying a pool from payless plastics on recommendation form a lady from The Homebirth Association. it cost us $60 and is only about 100mm wider than the actual birth pools. I think the pool was used for about 5-6 hours. We emptied the hot water cylinder twice and had pots boiling, but we have a gas cooktop, our power bill was about $30 up. Soemone else in another thread suggested hiring commercial size hot water urns ? That sounds like a good idea |
