Alex is a big time mover when he is asleep and I am beginning to wonder if this has something to do with him not sleeping all night yet (not that I am worried but I do wonder how on earth he doesn't hurt himself when I hear him banging up a storm on the cot) so I am wondering if he will be better off in a big bed. Now I know he can fall out of one so will either find one that he can't or put a side on but do you think this could be reason behind the not sleeping? I know he hurts himself cos you can hear when he does but I am not sure if I would be doing the right thing putting him in a big bed before he is ready. I have tried everything to stop him moving but instead I just get a grumpy grouch who can't move waking up instead of an Alex monster  Any thoughts much appreciated

| You can always try him in a big bed. Lots of kids sleep better once they are in a bed. We set Daniels up, put the cot mattress on the ground so if he fell out he had somewhere to land and put a pillow in the normal position and one along the edge where he might fall out so like in a L shape and he did fine whereas in his cot he would end up in weirdo positions. |

Yeah I don't think it would hurt to try him in a big bed. To begin with we left the legs off the bed and like Stacey put the cot mattress on the ground in case he rolled out of bed.
Ollie moved into a big bed at 2, but Lilia was only a little older than Alex (maybe 19-20 months) when she moved and she adjusted fine (well as soon as we took the cot out of the room she was fine ). ------------- DS 8 DD 6 DS 4 DD 2 |

Definately let us know, my boy is very similar, very wriggly (I was the same until I got married), and I'm hoping to be able to get him into a big bed when the next baby will need the cot, I was thinking I wouldn't haven't a chance, but its sounding good. ------------- http://www.alterna-tickers.com">

| Tom was a crazy cot sleeper and is a bit of a crazy bed sleeper but generally he is lying in a normalish position. We still take photos of the weird ones. I think he falls out too but have never caught it |

DS1 was a nightmare at waking himself up while sleeping in his cot. As soon as we put him in a big bed at 18 months he started sleeping thru the night everynight. He has fallen out of bed only 3 times and he has been in the bed for about 8 months now.
Def worth trying. I used the safety sleep on him for the first week just to try and get him to stay in bed. |

Ethan is the same...banging into the sides wakes him up..we havent tried the bed for 3 months cause we have anew baby and didnt want any other changes atm..but yeah we will be trying again soon but the times we tried it didn't work.. re the falling we just put the old cot mattress on the floor.. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

I've heard a pillow can help them to learn where to sleep and how to stay still. My boy isn't a wriggle so no help really.

Pillow didn't help us at all - we have the same issue is it just boys??

Jackson is a massive wriggler and crashes into his cot loudly all night. Sometimes he cries out when he does it. But he is a fantastic night sleeper, so it doesn't seem to affect that. I have checked on him twice tonight, and both times he has rotated 180 degrees from where he was last. I am reluctant to go to a bed just yet as he is so destructive (oh the mess he would make if he were free!) but also the wiggliness makes me think he would just fall out constantly. |

massive wriggler here too!! must be a boy thing
we've taken the side of cian's cot with the idea of transitioning him into a big bed and he's been fine. he's not sleeping through yet, but i think that has more to do with it being so hot he gets thirsty, and has only fallen out twice. he's definately more comfortable - he used to get his legs stuck in the gaps so now he has more room to move. i say try it! you can always go back to a cot if it doesn't work. ------------- Anita Mum to Cian (Aug 08), Josh (Jun 10) http://lilypie.com">

We moved Lily to a big bed at about 15 mths (carried on the day sleeps in the cot for another month or so though just in case I was outside when she woke). It hasn't stopped her from waking in the night but I think that is just how she is. She still wriggles around a bit but hasn't fallen off the bed. I set her pillows in an L-shape too. We did it early because she hated her cot and it was getting near on impossible to get her to fall asleep. Much easier now :) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| Thanks for all your input ladies... I am going to move Alex into a big bed this weekend as we seem to be sharing one for half the night anyway lately. We are waiting on one to be bought for him (1st birthday present from in-laws) so I think I am just going to put him in our spare bed and see how we go. Will let ya all know how we get on. |
