This whole TTing thing is confusing me!
He used to show really clear signs then regressed a lot when Ava was born (thats why I didn't start him back then) - now he's really interested in sitting on the potty and expects stuff to come out but doesn't do anything, then gets upset when he wees or poos in his nappy. BUT we're also going through the 'NO!' stage so he'll come up to me, say 'poos' or 'wet' then I say to him would you like to sit on the toilet, or offer to change his nappy (because I don't want to push it) and he says no. Or he tells me he's about to do something, then refuses to go on the potty even though he wants his nappy off. Suggestions, thoughts? I'm not going to push it, but we are planning on letting him roam nappy free over summer anyway, but I actually have no idea if I'm on the right track or not.

About 2.5 weeks ago Lilly just started taking off her nappy. She would know that she needed to go (crossing legs and holding herself), but did not want a nappy on and didn't want to sit on the potty either. I took her to the dr and started antibiotics for a urinal infection. Then last Thursday it just clicked for her. A star chart and lolly reward have worked wonders.
Maybe if your up for it start the nappyoff/freestyle time now for a week and see how things go. You can alway put the nappy back on if its no good. -------------

Sometimes it pays not to rush these things. I tried letting Bella go "nappy-free" about 3 months ago and it was a disaster - just one puddle after the other. I thought she was ready because she liked to sit on the potty etc. but obviously the connection wasn't there yet.
Now we are successfully TT because I guess the penny finally dropped. So instead of getting frustrated by it, just let Jackson keep doing what he is doing and see how the "nappy-free" time goes when the weather is warmer. I just went to a TT session by an expert guy and something that really clicked and made sense was that TT's mainly a physiological thing where their sphinter has to be able to send signals to their brain and back again to know when they're about to go pee or poo's. Otherwise you'll just be popping them on the potty each time and hit or miss as to whether they go or not which could get them bored and frustrated when they keep wetting themselves because they don't have the brain development to know their about to wee or poo. This stage is usually between the age of 2 1/2 - 4yrs. There are other physiological things related to their bladder size too. Anyway, what I'm trying to say it maybe he isn't ready yet.
He also talked about you being ready as much as them, not to stress over things and to have ideally 2 weeks at home while TT'ing for those messy instances and not to use nappy's during the day but he was mainly talking about older kids who can be trained in this timeframe. I'm sure there are many many different ideas/research but that made sense to me. This session talked about them knowing how to purposely pull their pants down as well. We've had a wee breakthrough on the poo front anyway - he knows when he's about to go, but refuses to go on the toilet still but that's fine, as long as he's starting to get it that's cool. We're doing nappy free time during warm days, mainly because I read a lot of articles about some children (esp boys apparently) needing to actually see or feel the wee running down their legs/landing in front of them before they start connecting the sensation with needing to pee/poo. |

That sounds sensible Emz. We asked Jimmy to do wees on the deck (rather than the carpet |
) which he complied with months before actually using the potty on his own. We tried to remember to take him out there and ask him if he needed to do wees at regular intervals, or soon after he'd had a drink of water etc, and then praised him each time he did it. The potty thing just happened randomly one day, he suddenly decided he wanted to use it, we made a huge fuss, and now he loves doing wees on the potty lol. He's terrified of the toilet, but I'm not worried - he's much too short to use it, even with a step stool
