Well my little girl is going to be 2 next month and she has had a dummy since she was 6 weeks old. I know she is very attached to her dummys... she has 3 of them and won't go to bed unless she has all 3 in her hand and mouth! It can be quite a mission at bed time trying to hunt them all down... Anyway does anyone have any tips on how to wean her off or should I just let it go for a bit longer and wait for her to grow out of it? I'm not to sure about doing this though, my cousin has a 3 yr old who still has a dummy and I don't know if I want her to have a dummy at that age. She is fine without them during the day but if you try to take one away from her any other time she screams the house down. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Hey I have 20mth old twins and last month decided enough was enough and chopped the top off thier dummies in front of them and then they put them in the bin as they knew they were broken.
They asked for them a few times but after a few days they were over it now don't even ask. I don't know if you want to go cold turkey like that but it has worked for us, I did it with my older daughter when she was 20mths to. I did something similar, I chopped the very tip off all of them without DD's knowledge then left it. She came to me saying "broken Mummy" so I said, as we were driving "shall we throw them out the window?". She loved that idea so I pretended to throw them out. We made a HUGE fuss of her that day, let her buy a present and she even visited Nanny and Grandad to tell them she was a big girl and no longer needed a dummy.
I was so proud of her. That night she even said to me "dummy broken aye Mummy" and then went to sleep happily! We never had any problems... Good luck! I think sometimes its harder for the parents than the kids! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

You could tell her that the birthday fairies need her dummies to turn them into a special 2 year old birthday present. Buy something plastic & put it under her pillow for her to find in the morning. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

I might try cutting the tip off and see how that goes... I'm actually feeling a bit nervous about it now haha. I know after her night bottle she always asks for her dummy and gets very upset if she has to wait for it. Should be fun! Posted By: lisa85

Stick to your guns and you'll be fine  I think it's always harder on the Mum than the kids. We went cold turkey and after the first 2 sleeps they seemed to forget about them although my 2 were only 1 year old at the time. My only advice would be once you decide to do it just get rid of them completely so you can't be tempted to give in on a rough night. My sister had all sorts of dramas taking the dummies away with her 2 year old twins but I think it's only because she keeps giving in when it gets hard.-------------

i told my son that the next day we were going to post his dummy to the dummy fairy to take to another little baby. we knew a baby younger than his lil brother so we said that the dummy fairy would take it to him. Anyways, he got VERY upset & i said don't worry we aren't doing it now, we'll do it tomorrow. He cried & wanted to do it right then & there (10.30pm) so off we went to the mailbox & put it in there & DH took it with him to work in the morning without DS1 knowing. I was up to him 5 times each time for 20mins of me lying in his bed with him & then i think he only ever mentioned it twice after that. the first night he didnt even ask for it tho -------------

if they do keep them untill they are a bit older, you can leave them out for the "dummy fairy" we did this with sarah we told her that the dummy fairy collects them so other little babies who need them can have them and she would give her 50c for each 1 that she could spend at the shop :)

I'm dreading this too... Chloe is VERY attached to her dummy! As soon as she gets tired she starts looking around for it and frantically saying "ta, ta, ta, ta, ta, ta..."
But that is one battle I'm not willing to fight yet, I'm waiting at least until Ollie is sleeping a bit better, so that I don't go completely mad! Best of luck to those trying to get rid of theirs... we will need it when our time comes too! ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |
